Rails KILL your edges!

Ok so I skied 3 days last weekend on my brand new skis, and our park had just rails up, so naturally I did a TON of jibbing, and I noticed that my edges are really worn down. Like halfway gone. I thought it was really quick for the edges to wear down like that. Is this normal? I fear that I wont have edges after this season, and my skis won't ski well at all.

of course rails will grind your edges down. they arnt made adamantium. thats why companies dont warrantee rail damage because its going to happen.

They are going to wear down, but you can slow down the process, but how you land on the rails.  If you land with the skis flat on the rail, it doesn't put much strain on the actualy edge.  I ski Perfects as well, we should ski together sometime.

dunno... i was at perfects last weekend and everytime i went on a rail mass sparks would fly under my skis, saw it for almost every1 there, must of been the rain. Cuz i never remeber that happening last yr.

yeah, i got my ski's last christmas and theres already like 18 inches of edge missing. WOO. they laughed at me at my shop when i brought them in to get fixed.. then i told them i wasnt talking about the edge i wanted my brakes fixxed and they thought i was cool.

I have been killing my fuji's for years now...and they of course have no edges...but that is the way I like it.

any time you see sparks that means that large amounts of metal are being worn off of something and its ususally your edges.

but i ski w/ kravtz... and it's true, the rails there don't do anything to your edges. but we have a sick park crew so our stuff's well kept

it helps alot for ur edges to be not as sharp for rails and makes kink rails alot easier but other wise ur skis shouldnt were down that fast

i just got new pipecleaners and when they were mounting em, i had em detune the edge so that it wouldnt wear down. i can still make good turns my skis just dont get owned by the rails as much.  it slows it down times 10

i guess its no surprise that this kind of thread is in the wrong forum.

anywho, rails damage edges. big fucking deal.

If you're going to be hitting a fair amount of rails, you're going to lose the effectiveness of edging, so you might as well detune the edges BEFORE hitting rails to preserve them longer than you would otherwise. If you use rails as a means of detuning, you might as well just throw your skis against the wall a la Evan Raps.  
And I'm not talking about using pansy ass sandpaper or some piece of shit stone; use a hand file and really get that metal off, and nice and round underfoot. You should see full shards of edge coming off, a sign that you are doing the right thing. This will reduce friction, and also reduce the amount of potential material that can be damaged.

why do you think equipment companies are really promoting jibbing so much?  because they know it damages your shit faster and know you have to buy new equipment sooner.  it is all just about making money.  So just think about it everytime you hit a rail corporate america is laughing @ you.


i think Terje Haokenson said it best if your equipment aint free youd be an idiot to hit rails.

the pipe cleaner isnt just for pipe, theres not really a good pipe at either mountain i ski at and so i normally am just hittin rails or jumps.

I have also noticed my wood core skis don't crack the edge as early as foam or composite or thc cores.

i had a job al summer and fall so i dont have to work in the winter. i snowboard, i have enough to buy about 3 new setups if i wanted but why would i do that? i really only need a park board cause thats all i ride, and i can ride it everywhere if i want to. but you really dont need 3 types of skis or boards to ride. maybe 2 one for urbano and one for the mtn

it is built for pipe.  it dabbles in park.
but it is mainly a pipe ski.

dude i was at perfects and hit those rails all weekend and my edges arent that bad or less worn that i thought theyd be...

and dude if you hit rails your edges are toast you might as well say goodbye to them... all of my old skis have literally no edge they will eventually just rip out underfoot...

If you detune in the first place, your skis should last longer, the edges wont catch as bad and wont wear down as fast. but when it comes down to it, park skis are like skateboards, they arent supposed to be pretty and new for long, when you use them you destroy them. dont be pussies about it.

for all you withe rpped out edges do you put anything in its place(glue or ptex maybe?) to keep water out of ski-if thats even necessary.. i just lost myedges at killington yesterday and will be skiing the next few days.

naturally if you are griding rails or boxes, pretty much anything metal it is going to dull the middles of your skis... there is really nothing you can do about it.  I am sure that this weekend was you just breaking in your skis.  I am sure the dulling process will slow down now that you have them dull-ish. 
I don't really think it will effect your ski performance that much, unless you're skiing on a sheet of ice.  My skis are SUPER dull in the middle and they ski fine on hardpack.  you'll be fine.

I don't know but my K2's I've had for a year and a half and I ski at a mountain 40+ time and ski rails every day and I still have good edges. + I ski my backyard rail 3-5 times a week. What company because I want to know what company has shitty edges

Actually this should be ins ski equipment, not NSG.
Thats one of the reasons i stopped skiing park, because i like to be able to turn on hard snow and ice, which is 2/3 of the year. That an i just find park to be boring.
