Terrible, terrible call. Fucking brutal. The refs have been terrible lately. That's a completely legit play, of course goalies can come out and challenge the shooter like that, Hasek's been doing it for years, the point wasn't to trip Gaborik, it was to knock the puck off his stick. Taking him out was just part of the solution.

This is flight 39, now leaving Detroit...

Looks like a legit play to me. If Gaborik skated anywhere else ont he ice with his head down like that he would be knocked the fuck out so why shouldn't the goalie do it. That being said there was like what 2 mintues left in the 3rd with a 5 goal lead really no need to pull out all the stops...

Although I thought the flight 39 comment was hilarious you are terribly wrong on that call. Slow that play down a lot, you can clearly see Hasek fall and kick out his legs ahead of his body in anticipation of a player cruising over him. This play is no different than another player turtling to take out a player with the puck. Hasek was not playing goalie, he was taking the part of a goon forward. Hasek did not play the puck first, that warrents a penalty. Gaborik could have been seriously injured from that player.

Before I saw it I thought maybe Hasek tripped Gaborik before he got the puck, but he got the puck first which by the rule book is legal. There was one the other day, can't remember who was playing, bu the goalie came out, tripped the player, didn't get the puck and a penalty shot was awarded. That was the right call there, but the Hasek one was wrong.

consider the situation on Hasek's end. Though he didn't mention it, he probably went out for the poke-check and then when he realized that Gaborik wasn't stopping, he probably instinctively guarded himself by keeping his arms in. I've had that happen before. You go for somebody, they aren't looking, and instead of getting yourself hurt, you protect yourself.

Oh I know, but when you see somebody coming at you like that, you usually don't think of anything other than protecting yourself. And when you go for a pokecheck, you rarely do it before the last moment. I'm pretty sure that we agree, but I was just throwing some more detail into it. His arms, in that video at least, seemed to be going up towards his head, and not necessarily above his head. That's pretty normal, as a goalie's helmet comes off pretty easily and a train coming at you would definitely endanger your dome.

I'm certainly not disagreeing with you on that - but if you've ever played hockey, you'd know that most pokechecks don't happen until the last minute and when a dude's coming at you, you stop thinking about the pokecheck and start thinking about getting destroyed. I'm just defending Hasek, as he's never been the type of player to do something inherently dangerous like that. Sure, he flops around and comes out like that a lot, but never without some sort of legal reason.

I'm pretty much trying to get the point out that it was both Gaborik AND Hasek's fault, cause if Gaborik had his head up, he would have avoided the hit and Hasek wouldn't have had to protect himself instead of throwing a pokecheck.

I hate the new NHL refs, ever since the lockout they call anything a hook. That being said, Hasek was definately pushing it, but I'm going to say it was legal.

Um... thats one of the reasons all of the skill players got pissed off before the lockout.  All of the finesse and ability was taken out of the game.  In the late 90's the NHL was a power forward's game.  Guys like Primeau and Tkachuk excelled because they were strong on the boards, and in front of the net, and could work through the clutching and grabbing.  Now that they eliminated the redline (which basically eliminated the trap), and redefined what really is holding, hooking, and interference, the game is faster and higher scoring.  It's just more exciting now.  Guys like Crosby, Kovalchuk, Malkin, and Olvechkin would not be playing as well if this was the old NHL.

But yeah... that call was pretty weak.  He was caught with his head down.  Any good player with their head up could actually make a move around that.  It just ended badly because he wasn't looking.

I think the refs called it because it was a little overkill.  Kind of like you're allowed to smack a guys stick away.  But i've seen refs make slashing calls where a guy smacked a stick so hard that it broke.  All in all, i think it's a pretty weak call.  But you can't tell me that Hasek didn't think that, the dude wasn't going to get taken out.

Apparently someone's not aware that a goalie is allowed to knock the puck off a guy's stick with his pads. The difference between a pokecheck and kicking the puck off someone's stick is absolutely 0 for the purposes of a tripping penalty. As long as he was going for the puck it doesn't matter whether he was using his pads or his stick to do it.

So you call me an idiot and then you agree with me? That makes little sense. Apparently I know better than you do what I'm talking about because I, contrastingly, am making sense.

It is legal to knock the puck off a player's stick with your pads, just as it is with your stick. You do not get a penalty for tripping even if the player falls down. Therefore, all the foregoing discussion about poke checks and where Hasek's stick is is irrelevant. Hasek took the puck off Gaborik's stick by sliding into him with his pads. Gaborik went flying, after losing the puck, but this doesn't matter because the original play was legal.
If you go for the puck it and get it, it doesn't MATTER what happens to the player in the process. Gaborik could've been wheeled off the ice and never walked again... it still wouldn't have been a penalty, because he's going for the puck. It's really simple and I don't know why you're having so much trouble understanding. Are you American?

Now we see the problem: you don't understand the rule. Wrong. It is not a penalty within the rules of the NHL for you to trip someone AS LONG AS YOU GET THE PUCK FIRST. The penalty of tripping is given when someone trips someone FOR THE SAKE of tipping them. If they knock the dude down in the process of getting the puck, it is NOT a penalty. If you actually watched a game now and again you might see this happen... defenseman chases forward back into his own zone, takes a diving swing at the puck, hits it, and then the player trips on his stick and falls: no penalty. Welcome to hockey, yank... this how we play in the real world.

did you see crosby get awarded a penalty shot in OT vs the canucks last saturday? it was because he was tripped and the defender DIDN'T get the puck in the process.

hasek tripped gaborik and DID get the puck in the process. the referee was in the wrong. and even if he wanted to call a penalty on hasek, the correct call actually would have been a penalty shot.

totally legit call. i would say there is about a 90% chance that if any of the newschoolers members disagrees with a call in the nhl, its because your little brain cant even comprehend what just happened, or you just think you know the rules. theres a reason why nhl refs get payed hundreds of thousands of dollars a year and you dont, and thats cause you dont know what the fuck your talking about.                                                                                                                                                                                              did any one happen to notice that behind the nets there is these two new lines that were never there before? they go from the back corners of the net to just before the boards start to bend into the corner. ya those lines. they were put there because too many goalies were going into the corners to play the puck and getting ruined. now goalies are not allowed to pass those lines to play the puck, nor are they allowed to leave the crease to play the puck.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                             so now that everyone knows the rules im sure we can all agree that a tripping call was the correct call, seeing as how your not even allowed to play the puck outside of the crease.                                                                                                                                                                                                                          and before all you little 15 year olds jump on my nuts and tell me im a idiot, this is my 9th year of officiating with the omha, i also played junior for 3 years, which means i know more then you so suck a dick.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                             plus hasek is the biggest siv, ero douch in the league.

when hasek leaves the crease, he is merely leaving behind all the protection he gets as a goalie within the framework of nhl rules, and becomes another skater. and as 'another skater', especially in this instance, he can trip gaborik as long as he gets the puck. which he does. it's very simple.

so goalies can't play the puck outside of the crease? that's a totally new rule to me, you IDIOT. of course they can play it outside the crease, just not in the zones in the corners, or past the blue line.

i feel sorry for the players you officiate...

one thing you fail to wrap your mind around is that the stick is really the only piece of equipment players have to intentionally make contact with the puck. for goalies, they have a blocker, a trapper, and two pads as well. if hasek had slid out and used his trapper and somehow smothered the puck or pushed it aside, WHILE tripping gaborik, it's a non issue, and a non call. just as if it would be if he poke checked. same goes for the pads...
