bottom up blows, i used to make hats that way and i hated it. now i do top down, the thing you have to to do is follow the directions as clearly as possible, who cares if it looks like shit, just keep doing it and be confident. sometimes my pancakes look all crappy and wavy and i just keep going and they turn out perfect. you also wanna avoid getting red heart, look for some good quality yarn like Bernat. and also when you do it make your pancake a little smaller than the last crease on your fingers (where your nails bend).

i started doing bottom up too, then i learned top down, its soo much better i think.

what size hook are you using? when i use my 6.5mm i start off chaining 6 stitches, if im using anything bigger then i do 5. connect the chain just like you would when your doing the first row around with bottom up. after you connect it, do a double, where you do 2 stitches in one hole. do that for your first row around, then on your second row, do single, double, single double, ect. row 3- ssdssdssdssdssd, row 4- sssdsssdsssdsssdsssd, and so on until you get to 6-8 singles between each. it takes some trial and error to find out how many stitches to do and such, but you'll get the hang of it
