I was dissapointed and annoyed by this movie in a number of ways. If nothing else, it has been very irresponsibly marketed. THIS IS NOT A BOB DYLAN BIOGRAPHY. It is more like an abstract portrait of his personality told through fictional stories. I'm a fan of Dylan's music, but do not know much about him and was eager to be better informed. Unfortunately, this movie contains no direct information about Dylan whatsoever (not even his name is mentioned), renderring it virtually inaccessible to anyone who is not ALREADY well versed in his life story. Did you know the 6 actors who play 'Bob Dylan' actually play fictional characters which represent him, several of whom are not even singers? I didn't before going to see it. The movie is written for well educated Dylan fans but dishonestly marketed to a more general audience.
Aside from that, I found it to always create the impression of being deep and profound while reamining so ambigous that its hard to prove that anything is really being said at all. Perhaps this is the point, but I'm a fan of clarity and believe that if you have a message to convey you should be articulate, or at least coherent. It feels like the kind of thing that will make some people feel very intelligent for having watched it, and yet is so open to interperetation that it provides no consistent insight of its own.
I'm curious to hear the imopressions of more educated Dylan fans, as they are clearly the more appropriate audience for this film.
