Well, I'm glad I didn't call in sick for a powder day, and it be a groomer day.

I'll post my personal opinion on the park later tonite after seeing it with my own eyes.

They need to pick some runs and just leave them ungroomed if it snows a lot. Here's my votes for which runs.
-Moment of Truth
-Blackjack
-Rooster Run
-Thunder Run

Leave those 4 trails ungroomed, and open after snowfalls, and I'd be satisfied. Oh, and open the section under the world chair once snow builds up. Once we get enough snow, the ditch is not an issue. I've skied that section numerous times with good snow.

KB made me throw up in my mouth this evening.

They groomed the SHIT out of EVERYTHING, right to the trail-edges and there was no soft snow anywhere. Somehow, despite a foot and a half of new snow falling the day before, there was a fair amount of ice. Pretty sad if you ask me. I still think KB needs to leave Blackjack, Moment of Truth, Thunder Run, and Rooster Run ungroomed.

As for the park. I don';t even know what to say. I'll start with positives.

Positive
- Flatbox
- Flat-rail, although the landing looks fairly close to the feature
- C-Box

These three features are setup well.

Negative
- Trapezoid Rail takeoff

Straight Up Pathetic
- Rainbow Box - Who honestly thought it was a good idea to just dump the rainbow box in the snow and open it? No takeoff, and the landing is basically a 2-3 foot deep RUT in the ground. Extremely unsafe.
- Small Jump - Build it back up. It's a waste of space as it is.

And the large jump? NOT Cool. The takeoff had a lot of kick to it, and the landing is EXTREMELY flat, especially for the size of the jump. It is unsafe, and needs to be redesigned. I refuse to hit it in its current state. Push up some more snow into the landing to steepen the pitch.

In a world consumed by lawsuits, and resorts around North America looking at parks with increased scrutiny after a few high profile lawsuits stemming from "improperly engineered and unsafe jumps", I'd expect more attention to producing a safe terrain park with well designed and safe features, not hackjob crap setup hastily and poorly.

It's extremely unsafe the way it currently is, and I hope that the jump line undergoes a lot of work.

i saw one snowboarder on thurs night actually make it to the landing.  He pretty much pointed it as soon as he got off the lift and made a couple of speed checks.  He was a little messed up by the kicker and landed on his heelside edge/ass on the "landing". I cringed from the lift when i saw him touch down

There were some people hitting it last night. It always resulted in an extremely loud slapping sound when they hit the landing.

I vowed to never hit it. I like my back, shins and heels too much to subject myself to that torture.

Good points, agree on the pow front. Stop the brutal grooming was a popular bumper sticker out west when I lived in big sky country. Perhaps a re-issue of these is in order. I found some on the sides and just beyond, but for many carryspeed and brushing away tree limbs is not an option so they can't appreciate the champagne. In most cases when we have 18 or so inches of fresh it is to heavy for the pitch of pretty much any slope here, but the other day was blower. Wednesday night was flat out awesome as the groomers were stabled in the barn. Park issues, it evolves daily and I am sure Erik will make adjustments. Snowing steady all day, real airy big flakes, if it keeps up you may be able to find some pow among the crowds this evening. Moment is open today, I have not been on it but I think it has huge rollers on the upper half and hope that later in the season we can get those carved up into a skier cross course.

Those 4 runs all have the pitch to make powder skiing possible at KB. If you can't ski it, then you're skis are too narrow. :)

I'm hoping to see some monster bumps on Twister soon too.

the big jump is still bad, but there is good news. they set up a second table below that first little one which is awesome. ts in between the big and small, nice tranny and was oerall suprisingly nice. the battleship was fixed as well so that the takeoff was hittable. (is that a word?)

The trap rail was fixed. Takeoff looked hittable. Large jump is still bad IMO, but I am guessing it will stay that way because I saw park crew kids hitting it, and they likely don't mind flat landings.

The middle sized table seems alright, but still a bit flat of a landing.

I'm too old for flat landings, and like nice steep, long landings.

Went out today...
First off, the snow was awesome in the park, limited ice spots after the only box people hit (flat one) and it was fluffy, on top, and packed nicely on the bottom.

Secondly, decent setups...
-Flat box was beautiful, end of story.
-Flat rail, looked a little sketchy, because people kept going off the side of the lip, but it wasn't bad at all, and the landing nearly noone had used, and no shitty people that's for sure. 
-The trap rail was fun, no actual lip onto it, but a little jump was easy from the rideon take off, and the landing was nice.
-The down c-box, also nice. T
-he rainbow...why is it on the hill... there's no lip whatsoever, it's like built up just so you run into it at a 35-45 degree angle, and the landing... nice on either sides...but there's literally a 2-3 foot drop down into the snow about 2 feet wide. Stupidest setup ever.

Now, the jumps...
-the first one, small, but nice, no big rivets anywhere
-and the second one... why is it there? It's twice as long as it's ever been, and to clear it you need a ton of speed. I didn't want to do anything mainly because just to straight air with a little grab was hard clearing the painful knucle. It's unsafe as well, little kids just go up, and drop off the top of it 7 feet down. One kid started cry because of this, another lost his ski, slid down the landing, and didnt get off the landing, just sat there whining about it... i was on the lift at the time, yelled at him to get up, he didn't listen, two snowboarders were coming...yelled again to no avail, the first one missed him, and the second saw him, slid out, and nailed the kid. It's just not right for where it is, and it needs to be shorter, or something.
-And I didn't try the one on the right... noone was clearing it, and there was a huge hole in the middle of it.

anybody have updates?  Is it safe to say that the early season park was better than the current offerings?

HV was solid ice tonight, as expected, except in areas where they were blowing snow.  It was dumping in the general area of KB tonight as I drove through, should help to cover some of the ice up.

I haven't seen anything since this past weekend, so I cannot comment, but the early season setup was much better than what was there this past weekend.

I will be out for a bit tonite, so I will report what I see.

On Tuesday they had an Up C-box curved to the right, and those barrels setup again, both at a diagonal to chose sliding or stalling. Decent take offs for it being 40 something all night.

-All the jumps (still incredibly flat landings)

I still have no intention on hitting those jumps with the landings the way they are. Way too flat. Even the smaller jumps landings are too flat.

    The rail setup was the same today.  I went in the morning so all the takeoffs are in good shape.  It was however, a little slushy because of the warm weather, which made landing on my 161 1080 a bit tricky, due to sinking in and washing out. 
   The first jump in the mega tri-line in a massive step down (30-35 ft.) to a very flat landing.  The second is my personal favorite (25-30ft) nice landing with enough room and good stepness.  The last jump (35-40ft.) seem like it would be hardest to make the landing because you have such a small transition.  Maybe 40 ft.  Go a little over of under speed and you'll bail.   The takeoffs are all decent and the only problem with speed you have might be with the first jump.

i went Monday afternoon, fun slush day skiing by myself listening to tunes.

similar park setup, but they closed the jump on the lower left and the rainbow box.  the flat box plastic is broke halfway down of the left and both cboxes have big chunks of plastic cracked out and broken off.  you can still slide them no problem, i just get a little looking at them.  The jumps were far from perfect, but i had no problems gaining enough speed and doing tricks over the jumps.  The first kicker is nice and wide, but still to poppy since the last foot on the kicker seems to come out of nowhere and the landing in real flat, but in slush it didnt hurt at all.  The second jump has an ok transition, but since it goes from the same pitch of the landing right into the kicker it comes up on you really quick, it also it really narrow and it does not look complete.  A week ago the landing looked awful, but they fixed it and i believe i was landing in the right spot all day long  The last kicker is good, nice and flat before it, some what poppy(could have a longer tranny) and wide.  But the landing is short and steep, so the correct speed is a problem ( at the end of my day i landed the 2nd jump, made no speed checks, and over shot.  I went home after that

i meant to say that looking at the busted boxes made me uneasy.  also, for guns were set up in the park.  1 fan gun in between the 2 smaller jumps, a tall stick gun (not the proper name) was positioned by the cut off to WOYO, and 2 fan guns in the jump line, one between the 1st and 2nd and the other between the 2nd  and 3rd

Don't shoot the messenger, Park Closed today for obvious reasons. Should be back up as soon as tomorrow evening depending on how quickly the colder temps roll in. This roller coaster year is wearing me down brother. Thinking of a VT. trip soon to re stoke the fire!

Anyways, I'm not terribly upset as the base should hold up, and maybe they will be forced to remake those abominations they call features.

Even people who were feeling psychotic enough to hit those jumps had NOTHING good to say about them.

park as of 12noon 2-11-08:
jumps and rails in the same spots , except one of the c boxes is out of commission ( it is sitting off to the side of the trail with about 1/2 of the plastic busted off).  Also, the kinked top section of the urban rail was cut off and it is set up at the end of the park more like a traditional down rail that you hit straight on.

For the 3jump line the landings are still flat, but the 1st kicker was taken down a bit and the second kicker was destroyed and a large pile of snow waiting to be shaped was sitting in its place.  For the final jump a massive, but super mellow kicker was put in its place.  looks something like thisKbjump

that pretty much sums it up. as for the mound on the second jump though, when i was there it was shaped into a jump, but was not to great. the first time i came up short, the second i overshot and landed flat.

i also saw some boarders hitting the first jump, and it actually seemed like it was improved upon.

Yes, the takeoff is much more mellow on the first jump, but there is still NO landing. I'd peg the degree of the slope on the landing at 25-30 degrees, which is still far too flat. Get it around 40-45 degrees, and it will be good.

The final jump is frightening to stand atop, as it's a big ass, mellow wedge, with a VERY short landing area. High stakes for sure.

They should focus on building one PERFECT jump with a great landing, and 2 takeoffs, one medium, one large, and call it a season. Screw a 3 jump-line with 3 poor-to-mediocre jumps.

On general snow conditions though and general skiing... I was pleasantly surprised yesterday as the left the majority of things ungroomed which made for fun skiing conditions early on in the morning.

the date was on the 245/snowflake site.  I asked Greg on Monday if he was running show, he responded by ranting on how the guys in Lockport dont want to come down to fulfill their obligations and how he has plans for that night and he wont be able to make it down to KB.  I guessing that since it is Valentines day all their ladies were holding them down for big dates....Later the next day the cancellation was confirmed while I listening to hecklers during my afternoon commute.  During  their  broadcast they announced that  the contest was canceled and to be rescheduled for a later date.

Everything is more or less the same, EXCEPT, 2 of the big jumps in the jump line were GREAT today. It was the 2nd and 3rd jumps.

Huge, smooth takeoffs, and the 2nd table has a very long, steep landing. 3rd table has a steep landing, but it's a touch shorter. I didn't hit it, but I can vouch for others who did who loved it.

I have hit the 2nd table, and it was very nice. Biggest table I've ever hit. I'd peg it around 50 feet. Quite intimidating actually. Wouldn't be completely opposed to a 2nd medium sized ~35 footer takeoff next to the big takeoff on the 2nd table as it'd be incredible with an awesome landing.

First jump in the line still has a very flat landing, but the other 2 make up for it.

so i take it that they scrapped the whole super flat, ski jump style take offs that they were working on on Monday.  Kenton went thurs night, told me the jumps were still sketched, so i decided to slide rails in the city on sat instead.  Now with this rain then freezing rain & killer wind who knows how long these nicer jumps will last

Yea, that sucks he gave you shitty intel. It was probably the best day I've had at KB this year: sunny, decent jumps for once, it was pretty epic if you ask me.

Ugh, Moses, you missed out HUGE. They are very smooth takeoffs, that just feel right. They don't kick you oddly, and they have the perfect amount of pop if you ask me. The 2nd tables landing is awesome.

Just ask Bucky how he felt about the jumps. I got comfortable straight airing it, and will start spinning off it next weekend as long as it survives. We have one warm day to survive today, and then cold comes back for the rest of the week.

To Trouble, an 80 footer at KB would be COMPLETE overkill. The 50 footers they have now are far intimidating enough.




The flat-rail takeoff is laughable though. Not sure exactly what they were going for there.

I'd also like to point out, my cousin informed me Langman's job is pretty shaky right now. They were thinking about firing him last week, but they didn't.  Pretty much everyone hates the park at the moment, even the snowboarders, apparently Langman's an ignorant prick who's always drunk. Which I agree, the park could be alot better, and I haven't liked what Langman's done to the place, so I kind of hope they think for someone new next year.

I agree. They stepped it up. But I still think all these new rails and things should be back in the old park run. This run sucks.
