IDEA, and its impact on me...

So my buddy just gave me Idea last week and i've watched it quite a few times. Since watching it I find riding park - primarily rails - sucks, and bores the shit out of me. What sucks is that I live right near Ottawa on the east coast and have never skied powder deeper than a foot, so i'm waiting for my chance to get out this winter to ski some sweet B.C. I know this is yet ANOTHER Idea thread but i thought i'd express my feelings...

oh yah man.
those 180's they were doing off 5 foot drops (literally) were TOTALLY progressive. yeah man. those tiny 180's are mind opening. i don't ski powder but now i can just dream what's possible. changed my life.
NOT
some of the shots were the dumbest things ever. tiny 180's off double stagers, sloppily trying to avoid hitting trees because you're trying to ski off-piste without poles. Some stuff was soo damn dumb. Then again, the step down session actually WAS amazing as was the last shot in the movie. And helmet cam's in the bonus. That's about it, seriously. IDEA was nothing special, not overly impressive. yawn, it bored me, and didn't open my eyes at all.

Can YOU throw a super slow, styly 180 off a huge jump? Also, have you ever tried skiing switch in pow? It's fucking hard. And what do you mean avoiding trees? When they were skiing the snow on a fallen tree 10 feet in the air? You sir are missing the point of the movie, it was showing that huge spins and technical tricks aren't necessary to make a trick look good, and that skiing is now about style.

dude you got to admit that 1st shot of skiing in the movie (pep's 5 nose tap thing off that drop) was ill as fuck..comon dude, just admit that one shot and i will say a ray of light in your soul...

Oh sheesh. That's what i said, some of the things in the movie were fucking awesome. And Mtbakerteacher, I said the massive 180's off the stepdown WAS sick. Too bad you read it wrong. Here's what I didn't like about it.
Andy trying to make a point that skiing without poles is better. HA. Sloppiest mess ever when he wasn't doing jumps or a cliff. He only proved that jumping is the only thing no poles helps with.
SOME ( here me, SOME) of the TOTALLY HUGE 180's they did. I think that one Ian Provo did was what? 5? 6 feet? Some of the stuff was pathetic and not worth putting in a movie, while some of it was definitely awesome. It's a toss up,a nd I came out on the negative nancy side of things. Too bad.

Idea had a better tone and vibe than most ski films I sit through.
I don't care if doing a 1 off a 5 foot cliff isnt progressive. Its fun, its in an amazing place, and none of these guys tried to convince you of anything otherwise.
Unlike other films, idea seemed to put the cock posturing and claiming on the backburner, in light of capturing what the time they spent was really like, I wish more films were like this.
Besides, I think jibbing is pretty lame so I am happy that the film focused on what skiing is really about to me.

no but the movie does revolve around the people that buy it. Heres my veiw on IDEA though - although it has its moments and i did really like the style of filming. I just thought it was WAY over hyped and people made way to big of a deal. I also think that lots of other skiers have been doing the same stuff and better for a while now. They just did it with poles and without iberg.

Another thing about the movie that made it great, was that it wasn't rider-based. They didn't announce each riders segment, it was just based on the area. And I didn't get bored of watching any certain section of the movie. Like take Enjoy for example. I got MAD bored of watching Jamie Pierre fly onto his back off every single cliff. There was none of that boredom in Idea.

My opnion: I watch ski movies to get stoked and excited to progress my own skiing. So argue with me all you want, but I'd rather see things that I don't do everyday, and that make me look forward to my next day on the slopes.

You have go to be kidding, you cant hate on a movie just cuz ur some loser with ADD who cant sit through some sort of skiing with some amount of substance. The fact that they didnt show all the gnarliest shit they did ever in the movie was half the point, the end result isnt what they want the viewer to see its the process, unfortunatly you must do 30 foot 180s all day perfectly and are the best skier ever and never fall becase you cant relate to IdeaÂ

I just saw the whole thing (arrived today YAY) and I was blown away by the amazingness.
The filming was sick, the skiing was sick (switch through trees WHAT) and the creativeness was a fresh thing to see in a movie. I liked how they didn't announce the places and the skiers. I could figure out who they were by myself with the individual skis and style. I'm watching it again.

Dude, you guys ain't got nothin on me. I'm the master of missing hand drags. I always pop too hard on accident, miss the drag, and fly down the hill doing half a backflip.

and some of that stuff in there was really really gnarly, without a doubt

i agree with you... i would personally rather go on a box and try some weird thing on it or go off a huge stepup and do the biggest daffy ive ever done and get applauded from the old people and just be totally stoked, or even just go do a bump run or two

fuck, switch pow landings are starting to get over-rated to the point where people think idea was a good movie because it had mostly switch pow skiing.

very well put, i dont really agree with the jibbing side, and it could be said there was some sick jibbing in the film, the barrel jibs for example. how ever you've got it bang on about how one of the best things was that they were just chilling out on camera, whilst still being sick as fuck, and showing what skiing is like from there perspective, rather than the standard park rat sections etc.

I ski primarily parkk, and I agree that there are a lot of limitations to skiing, expecially rails. It's mostly because of the nature of rail skiing, how it generally only incorporates different directions of spinning. I really like the new grinds that the bogart kids and other skiers are doing, super creative and super cool. Definitely progressing a part of skiing thats becoming stale.

dude a lot of people ski park because they want to. Obviously pow days are special and everyone wishes there were more but still i can have some pretty fun days in the park with some friends.
And i dont know whats all this hate on rails. I dont know what i would do if there werent any rails around. Obviously not many of you have had an urban session cause those are some of the best memories i have in skiing.
Pow is great and might be the funnest thing to ski (the fact that they are rare adds to the plesure), but that doesn't mean that that everyone has to start boycotting rails. idea was a great movie because it's original in the way to ski the backcountry, but originality doesn't stop there. There can be a lot of new shit happening on rails and jibs. Pretzels are only one of them. Watch Thanks brain or picture this and you ll find tons of progression in jibbing. I really like Idea as a movie but would like to see another movie put that much originality in another movie that actually pushes urban and jibbing on anything. Pow, rails and jumps all make skiing and i wouldnt want to stop doing any of the 3, they are all just as important as another
