Religious bigotry in america

This whole situation with mitt romney has seriously pissed me off. I do not support the man for the presidency, but that is based on the fact of his politics, not his religion. Why does the religion of a candidate even matter? Im sick of hearing about it. He gave his speech on "Faith in America" and I think that he did a great job. It is just pathetic that he even needs to give a speech to legitimize himself in the first place. I mean honestly, the factors that matter the most in life are being passed up for petty differences. Isnt america the land of the free, including religious freedom? Again, I am not a Romney supporter and this is not supposed to be an argument whether god exists or whether we should have religion or not. The point is that there are people that are completely hating on someone just because of their religious affiliation. I just wish that the american public would be more mature than that. Bigotry is just as bad as racism or any other hate crime for that matter, yet it seems to be a predominant problem in america. Base your opinion of someone on their actions, not on some false accusations on something that has been spread by mudslingers.

I personaly would not vote for a  mormon persident since I think that the religion is unjust due to many desicions they make as a religion. Since Mitt is a morman he will have those values and look to protect them.

You obviously don't know much about mormonism.  Or else you would realize that this isn't just a normal religion.  They have many practices and beliefs that I, and probably you too, would consider outright ridiculous and immoral.  So, yea, we shouldn't outright hate someone for their radical beliefs, but when It comes to voting for a presidential candidate, people have the right to not vote for someone because they feel he would impliment his radical beliefs on this country.

you see, to make an assertion like that, you better be ready to provide evidence that supports your argument.  if not, whoever reads that can think that it's possible that you are actually completely ignorant with respect to the given topic.  i, for one, would love to hear you present a solid argument for what you just claimed, and for you to spell a little better when you do so.

^HA if you want to vote for him go ahead. Without getting into a 500 word essay about mormons I will say that  I think due to what mormons belive in I will not vote for him. (that just my opinion...dont get bitchy beacuse you are a mormon.)

From what I see from Mitt Romney, I hardly see him as a radical. Majority of all my mormon friends dont resemble religious extremists or anything near immoral as well. This is an example of what I am talking about. He outright said that he would never let his religious beliefs sway his duty as president. He didn't let it happen as he was the Governor of Massachusetts. Its preconceived ideas about a religion that people are just saying,"no, I could never support a mormon". Its ridiculous. People cry for separation of church and state but yet they refuse to let it happen.

first of all, i am still quite undecided as far as who i will vote for, but i do know that in my experience (which is pretty vast in this respect...i spent two years as a missionary for the church talking to people all the time about this) a lot, and i mean a lot, of people have a totally skewed idea of what the church actually represents and what we believe.  i don't mean to be bitchy at all, so please don't misunderstand the tone of what i wrote.  i just want to hear what you are actually thinking.  kinda like when Quinny says above me, "such as?"

Countless people high up in the Mormon Church have condemed terrible things such as rape, incest, murder, polygamy, etc.  The whole backgorund about Joseph Smith is ridiculous.  The rest of the Christian world does not even consider them Christian.  You hear countless stories of children being made into sex slaves, others being bannished from their families, gay people commiting suicide.  Theres a whole bunch of shit, you can go on forever.  And you here that thats only a small section of the religion and the rest of it is normal.  But thats bullshit, the whole things a big cult-their just trying to look good infront of the media. They still believe in all that terrible shit.  Obviously Romney isn't gunna say he believes in that but deep down, he knows that if he becomes president, all that shits gunna come out, and hes gunna bring the corrupt mormon church to a higher power in the US.

quailman...you say that if i were to tell you those things you mention are false, that i am wrong and you are right.  i ask, what qualifies you as one to speak authoritatively about this, when i have personal experience on my side.  you have no idea what you are talking about.  tell me, do you know any of these things you claim first hand.  no, you don't.  there is a lot written and spoken about the mormon church that is false, usually by people who make much of their careers slandering the church and its members.

First of all, do you realize that the first point you made really does nothing to support your hatred of Mormonism since the word "condemned" means to express strong disapproval?  If you're trying to paint a picture of Mormons being an immoral, horrible group of people, you didn't start out very well.  The rest of your arguments are pretty much just pointless drivel, without a single fact to back them up, that is, if anyone took you seriously after that first statement.  Get off ns, read a few books, then come back and try to express your views in an intelligent manner

i agree with your point.  what crossed my mind though is how Bush's religious views have impacted our country in a negative way IMO. or rather, not in a negative way but they've hindered certain things such as stem cell research because of his religious views.   To be honest i almost think an agnostic president would be best.  Someone who doesn't lean towards religion or away...just someone who is in the middle and respects all people for whatever they choose to do.

But seriously, you can say stuff like htat about ANY religion, but it doesnt mean that a person of the religion follows all of those views. For example, i am a catholic. No, I do not approve of preachers raping little boys.

and yea, I just looking at the facts.  I think religion in general is ridiculous.  But when It comes to mormons, I'm not saying everyone whose mormon is a bad person, its just that in general the religion has many ridiculous beliefs and practices that I don't agree with.  And I'm not going to risk voting for a mormon.

So you acknowledge that their beliefs are no more ridiculous than those of other christian sects, yet you're still not going to "risk" voting for a mormon who pledges not to let his interfere with his policies? You realize that many evangelical candidates base the core of their campaigns around their christian rhetoric and policy, how is that any better? Mormonism's beliefs seem no more ridiculous than the transmutation of bread into body so you've yet to provide any coherent reason why a mormon president is such a "risk" besides plain bigotry.

btw, I'm not voting for Romney for reasons other than his religion

I kind of like romneys issues. I prefer ron paul but romney is similar. I like the guy.

Yeah, we probably wouldn't have ever had about 95% of the wars and fighting in the world if religion didn't exist to separate people. I mean, I guess it's a good idea because it gives people reasons to live good lives and stay alive, but a lot of brutal stuff would have never happened. Hitler? Just about every conflict ever pre-1900? etc.

I'm not really sure why whenever anyone says anything about Mormonism it turns into a hate fest.  If you were to take a quick look throughout history, every major religion has done so many horrible things.  Mormonism has done relatively little in comparison.  I'm not a member of any religious group, but I think that before anyone bashes Mormonism for its faults in the past and present, they should first examine their own religion.

On a side note, I hate Mitt Romney.. but not because he is a Mormon.

a persons religion relates to their character and personality. a persons character and personality will relate to the decisions they will make. thus a persons religion will relate to the decisions they will make. voting to have someone in charge of your country without taking their religious beliefs into account would be down right foolish

To make matters worse, you add prepubescent  retardedness along with all the closed mindedness and I think that I am amongst the worst offenders on the topic. What is with all of you? Do you actually mean the shit that comes out of your mouth? Have you really gotten down to that level? I am hoping and praying that you are just saying that shit just to get a rise out of people, but I think that some of you guys are really meaning what you are saying. Well, I agree with the thread poster in some respects. I think that religion has been blown way out of proportion in this election race and seems like only thing the presidential candidates ever talk about anymore, and it keeps them from having to answer legitimate questions about real life policies. But, you also have to realize that, up until a lot more recently than most other religions, the Mormon church has had some pretty fringe positions on a host of issues. If people are going to support him, or more importantly if he is going to lead this nation for the next 4 years, people want to know if he is secretly a nutcase or not. I mean, it sounds crude but, if lets say a scientologist was running for president, I cannot see myself ever supporting someone that believes in something that I view as gullible, and a lot of Christians feel that way about Mormonism. Lastly I also think that if the Republican party had a stronger field of candidates Romneys mormonism would be pretty insignificant, mostly because Romney would be insignificant, but because they're whole team is weak they have no choice but to push him as a frontrunner.
