how many people here that dress like they are ballers or thugs or stright stez'n, can really ski with abilities to dress the way they do? Discuss alomg yourselfs.

I wear gigantic clothing and have XL saga pants, and I'm terrible at park skiing. But I probably ski better than most of the people on this site, I'm just not so good at spinning around while I do it. I'll slay tree runs all day and have rarely ever looked at something and not been 100% sure I could ski it. Plus I DGAF anyway so I'll wear whatever I want.

Thanks for clearing up the rules for how to dress when your skiing, it's good to know.

This is seriously retarded, why can't people dress the way they want to? Why are you so eager to judge people?

It is not absurb at all. In fact, it is a prime example of asymmetric information theory.

People will buy Saga, FT, whatever, because they want to signal to others that they are good skiers.

The guitar example; If someone has a nice guitar, people will rationally assume that they can justify buying it. To justify buying it, we can assume they are good guitarists; that is the guitar plays a large roll in their life, and hence they are well-versed. A beginner will start off with a price point guitar, and as they improve, will upgrade their guitar.

If I decided to take up photography, I would not immediately go out and buy the most expensive lenses, or camera, or camera bag, etc. I would buy better equipment as a I progressed, as I needed it; AS MY SKILL LEVEL JUSTIFIED THE PURCHASE

So, the conclusion we can draw from the theory is this: your skill level will be procyclical with the quality of your equipment. As you get better, you will be able to justify buying more better, more expensive equipment.

So when gapers do in fact buy handmade skis, and expensive outerwear, it is to act as a signal they are better skiers than they truly are.

People can dress however they want, and that is the point; if I have never seen a person ski before, I cannot tell how good they are. So I look for inferences. Clothing is the first point of inference. So, since this is what I base a judgment on.

And I, like every other person, will judge others, because of thousands of years of cognitive conditioning.

There is a paper written by George Akerlof, who is at UCB now, entitled 'The Market for Lemons; Quality Uncertainty and the Market Mechanism', which he won the Nobel Prize for, in 2001. It deals with this exact problem, about the problems of judging quality, when we have incomplete information. It's well worth a read, and might be insightful.

I like how you throw around alot of big words to try to justify what is, without a doubt, some seriously judgmental comments/observations. Your basically saying, that if you'r not a good skier (you have yet to determine what that is?), there are certain types of clothing/gear that, in your opinion, one should not be allowed to own or ski in. So according to your logic, one should not ski in/with the best gear one could buy, and settle for lower quality gear and certain types of clothing. So tell me, what should someone wear if he's not "good" at skiing, for example, park?

That paper was pretty enlightening, one of the better pieces I've had to write on a response on at school. It is very true. Anyone who says they do not judge another person with no previous experience based on what they wear is flat out lying. One expects a person dressing loud to be good, plain and simple. If he/she isn't killing it, then opinions are formed. Same goes for the reverse, if someone is not dressing loud, one assumes they are not great.

However, in the end all that matters is that everyone is having a good time skiing. If you aren't, whats the point? That kid in the g-suit who isn't killing it could be a really good guy, and just loves to ski. Ski for your enjoyment, not others.

when I dress baggy I feel better, and when I feel better, I lose my fear a little bit so I actually ski better, so when I dress better I ski better. : D

I prbly dress to cool for what I can do so give me a "Warning: may not ski as good as i look" sticker :D

I completely agree with what Nickp is saying, and I don't know how anyone can not understand this.  Everyone does it.  When you see a kid wearing a magic suit, you expect them to be good.  It's just how it works.  I personally would not buy a magic suit or G suit or air raid because it would just be embarrassing for me.  Personally, I don't care what people wear and how good they are at skiing, it is their attitude that matters.  If a person is all thugged out and acts like it and sucks, then they just look like a douche.  If a person is all thugged out and is just enjoying every minute and acknowledges that they may not ski as good as they look, then props to them.  I consider myself to be pretty good now.  I rock a suit that no one else has, and I think it's pretty dope.  It's baggy, but not over the top.  I would rock FD, Saga, LD, or Trew, even though I amy look better than I am.  But I probably would not get such an exclusive suit such as the G/Magic suit.  I would mix and match though.

There is one strong point that I want to make.  Alot of kids make fun of racers for wearing tight outerwear and race suits and such.  They say that racers should wear baggier stuff to look cooler.  But, when there is that one racer who does have "park" outerwear he gets ripped on for being a racer. 

And for my first post up there, where I kind of rambled, what I meant by not wearing a G suit/ Magic suit is because of the way people would judge me.  I love the G suit, always have, but I don't want the ridicule that I would probably get from wearing it compared to how good I am.  There are two sides to this argument, and I am on both sides.  I will say that I have judged other kids based on what they wear, and I have also probably been judged.  Whatever, it doesn't mean anything.  Its your attitude that matters.

I just get whatever Henrik has because I know hes good and super G. So now when I wear the same stuff as him I will look good and get respect from everyone no matter how good I am because skiing is about looking cool, rap music, and smoking weed.

Outerwear don’t really matter. Gear on the other hand, matters a whole lot. I have a friend who just started skiing last year and bought a pair of candide 4.0s. He looks like a retard. There are some things that ya gotta earn gear wise, but clothes aren’t one of those things.

Pretty true actually. Starting out with shitty gear makes ya appreciate good equipment more when you finally get solid enough to use it.
