I think it is right that this woman wasn't charged. I'll agree that what she did was angry and messed up but I don't think it was criminal. You can't police everything that is said on the internet, and you can't arrest everyone who makes a suggestion about someone's life. Maybe if she had said hang yourself or I'm going to kill you, ok that's a threat toward someone's wellbeing.
I feel this girl might have done this anyway and blame it mostly on her own depression and parental units. Let's say this girl actually had met a boy in real life, had a relationship and it went sour, if he told her to screw off and go die I don't think he would be brought up on charges right???

I dont think thats the point though. I mean, sure, if she is that unstable, she would probably do something at some point, but the actions of that mom are disgusting. Not criminal, but despicable. I definitely couldnt live with myself after doing that to a little girl.

umm I don't think u quite understand the situation. the girl had problems with depression, the mom knew she was on meds.
"had she met a boy in real life" well thats the thing, that probably would have boosted her self esteem. but the only relationship she had ever had was on myspace.
don't tell a 13 year old depressed girl with problems fitting in to "grow a thicker skin." you haven't been around women much, have you?

I'm sorry I just have no sympathy for someone who ends their life due to what someone on the Intarwebs told them. I know plenty of people who have had huge tramatic experiences due to real world relationships so I don't think they are all confidence boosters. Maybe the meds drove her to suicide, I hear that is a common side effect of some depression meds believe it or not. I just think that a lot of this is the parents fault for not boosting their daughters confidence and mood like they should have.

It's really not fair to blame the kid. A person of that age is completely incapable of making the rational decision of an adult.
I think many of you fail to realize that all teenagers are all very impressionable and incredibly stupid. That includes everyone with an NS screen name whether you like it or not. Everyone has been there. It's impossible not to be, their minds are still in a developing stage and cannot fully comprehend things.
It is the responsibility of both the parents and society to help the development of young people and to prevent this kind of crap.

Obviously the majority of the people here have no idea what mental illness is and are coming off as ignorant bastards. To hold someone who obviously was mentally ill to a standard that a normal healthy human being has is not only idiotic, its wrong. Its like telling a double amputee to get up and fucking walk. Nobody would even imagine telling that to someone that is paralyzed because that is something that you can see, but all of a sudden once it comes to mental illness its like, "man, that bitch was just over reacting to someone on the internet. I'm sure there's something more behind this than just some bullshit messages over myspace. I'm sure this girl was already depressed to begin with. A girl like that would probably have committed suicide before finishing Jr. High anyway.
The mom of the girl who committed suicide is most to blame for not realizing how sincere about killing herself this girl actually was. No one, not even someone mentally unstable, kills themselves over messages from a bullshit profile. There's definitely something else beneath this.

i think the emphasis should be not on the fact that a 13 year old girl killed herself over this, but that a fully frown, "mature", adult woman instigated it over myspace. she found the time to plan and do all this, this was no accident and entirely premeditated. you would hope that there's an age where you have gained enough wisdom to stop doing stupid shit, but apparently not. but even so, i'm pretty sure an 8 year old child would know that that's a stupid ass thing to do.

Thats true, but still saying "we're going to mess with" a girl that is already depressed is not cool. That mom is evil and she knew what she was doing. Maybe she didn't know that the girl would kill herself, but its still sick that she would do that.
