"I'm from Minnesota"
Since my 10th grade i've wanted to go to the university of utah. They have one of the nicest schools around and I wanted to go out there with my best friend zak and bassicly ski alot and live my dream. my 9th and 10th grade year i didn't try that hard in school, consequently i had a super low GPA going into 11th grade "2.4" Something clicked in my head and it said... "shit you're not going to college if you don't get it in gear" so for my 11th grade year i ran a 3.5 or better GPA. But it wasent good enough for the u of u, because all that hard work and studying still only brought me up to a measly 2.627.
since I wasent trying that hard my first 2 years in high school i didnt really learn all much either... wich in turn didnt help my ACT score.
"might sound overconfident to say this but..."
I'm a really smart kid anyone who talks to me asumes that i'm in honor classes, and people will often come to me for advice. And i didnt just sit around high school either. I'm involved with many student organizations and clubs "youth in government" "choir" "soicity of political debate" all kids of nerd things i was also All confrence choir. But all of this couldn't overcome the fact that I didn't try verry hard my first 2 years in high school.
So please anyone who is just starting high school or who is slacking, please try hard because one day it will bite you in the ass!
And if anyone says.........."the u of u is way easy to get in to"......... "yeah it is, and i should have easly gotten in so i dont want to hear it"

as ridiculous as it may sound, i agree with what supachronic said 100%. my high school experience sounds nearly identical to what he described. now that i'm in college, i realize that what i did in high school basically counted for nothing. i had 9 AP classes and a 31 on the ACT under my belt, but i am really no further ahead than anyone else. a strong GPA and a rich family are really all that matter once you get into college.

True. You could cover all the material you would in college over the internet for free if you actually gave a shit.

Funny you should say that cause in my first semester of college I learned more than I did in the first two years of high school. And it happens to be some of the most useful things I have ever learned.

as of now i've probably got a 3.4ish GPA and in 10th grade. i truthfully don't study, read, do much homework or anything. i actually hate it but i procrastinate sooo much. school just comes easy to me, i can no nothing going into a test and pull off a high B on it. i'm luck for that but i need to try in school, i want to go to any school i want (which is a ski school) i'm just starting to realize this now though haha. this is my hardest year, and after this it's smooth sailing junior and senior year. i figure if i apply myself i'll be able to get close to a 4.0 both of those years taking bullshit classes. that's my goal, get a good GPA close to like 3.7-3.8. SAT's should be relatively easy to score above average. hopefully that little plan works out well hahaha.

i love school and i love learning but yeah i did early decision to colorado college and my buddy got a 1350 on his sats and they just said no so i probably wont get in either i only got a 1240 so im already bummed and prepped for rejection. i think school is important but i do think if im motivated enough that i could learn alot more by just sitting home and reading books and teaching myself

First of all, don't tell us your smart, If you are, you would have worked hard and at least done better then a 19 on the ACT and a C gpa. But don't worry, it doesn't really matter that you didn't get into the college you want. If I was you, I would try to go to any 4 year college I could (better then nothing) or at least communtiy college or something. Don't give up and say fuck college too or you'll be making another thread on how kids should go to college and work hard. Do the best you can do as of now and you'll be able to get a good job and ski a lot.

i was kinda in the OP's situation, went to high school in redneck, vt and couldnt stand the atmosphere so i dropped out, got my GED and skied and chilled for a year, then not wanting to have to actually work i decided it was time for me to go to college. I did well on SATs and had good test scores from the GED test, along with a decent resume. I chose to go to CMC for the location, but i think i could have easily made it into a better school, so don't worry so much about highschool, it all works out if you want it to.

I'm a semester away from 2 degrees. University teaches you something VERY important.... it teaches you how to learn. Seriously, after 5 years of university I am much more analytical, a better problem solver, more organized and more confident.

jeez.
well technically you COULD teach yourself say, classical Chinese or quantum physics online--if you were lucky enough to get the resources.
however,
-you wouldn't learn it as quickly or effectively.
-there are some things (eg. second language conversation skills; writing skills in general, and a host of other things) that would be too hard or impossible to learn on your own.
-try getting into grad school with no post secondary academic record on the basis that you "taught yourself online."
-the professor knows more than you do, and if you go to a good school, chances are he/she knows more than wikipedia (or sometimes even the textbook) on the topic of concern.
-WOULD you actually do all the work and learn all the material you would have in college? the answer is no. you wouldn't write a 5-page essay for fun, let alone a 40-page essay. and if you're working full time as well, you simply wouldn't have the time to put into studying (or wouldn't want to). have you tried teaching yourself an academic subject? it's hard. I have tried teaching myself concepts, grammar, vocab. etc. in my major, as well as other languages (when I was taking time off to work) and I would consider myself fairly skilled in languages, but even when I used the university level textbook I still didn't get as much out of it as when I took the university level course, and also it took a lot longer.
If you still want to know specific things I have learned that I didn't or couldn't learn when I was teaching myself, ask away.
if I were you, I would re-assess the ideas you have about college. maybe it isn't for you, after all it isn't for everyone, but your post made it seem like you thought college is useless/a waste of time for everyone.

Learning things is good and all.. I'm a firm believer that the internet is mans greatest ever resource. However, it won't give you the most important thing that university will.... THE LETTERS AFTER YOUR NAME AND THE PEICE OF PAPER YOU HANG ON YOUR WALL. Seriously, you could be the smartest person in the world, but someone reading your resume isn't going to care if they don't see the goods.

to the kid who says just do whatever the fuck you want, grades and suspensions dont mean anything. uhhh, yeah they actually do. A my roommate here at UVM got 4.0 in highschool and was suspended for having an airsoft gun in school. That suspension was a huge reason he didnt get into a lot of other schools. so yeah, doing well in highschool is important, unless you want to be a lazy, unmotivated, freeloading stoner for the rest of your life.

that granny is leanin like a mafucka but seriously i kick myself in the ass for not trying hard towards the end of high school i got lazy and started smoking more pot and my grades dropped, needless to say i just didnt take school that seriously and got waitlisted at my dreamschool. I just lack some serious goals but if you have a dream then go for it even if it means goin to a 2yr and transfer in after you get your grades up.
