Since my 10th grade i've wanted to go to the university of utah. They have one of the nicest schools around and I wanted to go out there with my best friend zak and bassicly ski alot and live my dream. my 9th and 10th grade year i didn't try that hard in school, consequently i had a super low GPA going into 11th grade "2.4" Something clicked in my head and it said... "shit you're not going to college if you don't get it in gear" so for my 11th grade year i ran a 3.5 or better GPA. But it wasent good enough for the u of u, because all that hard work and studying still only brought me up to a measly 2.627.
since I wasent trying that hard my first 2 years in high school i didnt really learn all much either... wich in turn didnt help my ACT score.

I'm a really smart kid anyone who talks to me asumes that i'm in honor classes, and people will often come to me for advice. And i didnt just sit around high school either. I'm involved with many student organizations and clubs "youth in government" "choir" "soicity of political debate" all kids of nerd things i was also All confrence choir. But all of this couldn't overcome the fact that I didn't try verry hard my first 2 years in high school.

So please anyone who is just starting high school or who is slacking, please try hard because one day it will bite you in the ass!

And if anyone says.........."the u of u is way easy to get in to"......... "yeah it is, and i should have easly gotten in so i dont want to hear it"

thats not true if u hate highschool fuck it! you can jsut go skiing al day in utah if thats wat u really wanna do u can have a negative GPA and they will let u!

I almost flunked out of high school freshman year. i just didnt care and i still dont. as a senior i have four classes. school just isnt that important to me

Are you in your senior year now? because if so just get good grades again and then reapply and have your school send them a new transcript, they require you to send in another one at the end of the year also.  I would say your not out of the running yet, just kill it this semester.  also maybe take an ACT class and try to do better, i know 18 is the lowest The U will accept but you need a really good gpa to go along with that.  you can do it!  if not go to SLCC for a semester and transfer, that way you will still be in Utah and pretty close to The U anyway.

actually ran the #'s for me and if i ran a 4.0 gpa for my entire senior year i would still need a 22 on the ACT wich i dont see happening i actually did just have a 4.0 at the end of the Quarter but i dont see myself being able to pull of a 4.0 for the rest of the year and a 22. But thanks for the support. My parents wont let me go out there if i'm not going to a 4 year school, so slcc is out

but you wont be going there for 2 years, one semester is all you need to transfer then you will be in a 4 year school.  sr. year gets really easy so you might have a shot at it.  take ACT classes i have friends where they helped alot.  if going to SLCC wont work then just go to a school instate in Minni and get decent grades then transfer here

or you can be like me, smoke mad pot and shred gnar pow and barely pass your classes to get your diploma and have mad fun at the same time.

the irony is that afterwards i went to college, did two years there with a 3.89 gpa and later transferred to university where i just won a scholarship and will be graduating with an honors business degree in may.  the irony is that first and second year university classes are generally really large with hundreds of students per teacher and is a really poor learning experience.  college transferring allowed me to obtain cheaper tuition and smaller class sized with more prof attention while getting the same credentials and a wider range of experience.  however, there is much merit to the university experience as the networking and overall lifestyle is much better.

nonetheless, i barely passed high school (i was smart, just didn't go to class ever) and here i am about to graduate near the top of my class.

my only advice is to plan out what you want to do and do what needs to be done to achieve that.  for some that means working hard in high school, for other it means dropping out and starting a business.  but make a plan, do the research, and have a exit strategy.  meaningful rewards come only with hard labour, but not all labour is meaningful and will achieve your objectives

its kinda hard to enjoy life whilst living off an $8 an hour salary

thats what college is for genius...you go and study for 4 years and in return you trade those 4 years for the rest of your life.

plus depending on the college you go to, and whether you go wit some friends, college is prolly one of the most fun times of your life.

you can always go to a community college for a year or two and then transfer to whatever school you want. All your credits will transfer and you will save so much money if that matters to you.

does utah look at SAT scores at all? might be worth a shot if you havent taken them yet. i never took the ACT but ive heard they are pretty different, so you might have a chance at doing well on the SAT.

also like someone above mentioned you can always stay instate at a uni or community college and transfer out after a year or two. gets your general requirements out of the way and saves some cash. i doubt your parents would be upset about that.

why would they take you so you can ski? you need to look at the school based on what you think you want to major in, not just what ski resorts are near by.

Man, if you want to ski just go skiing. University and skiing to mix man, trust me you'll have a lot less time to ski than you think. I did the same but pulled my marks up and went to a pretty hard college to get into in vancouver so i can go skiing at whistler a lot. But lately ive been working my ass off couldnt go this weekend cause i had to much fuckin school to do, cant go next weekend cause i gotta study. So either pick school or go skiing for a year... its pretty fuckin hard to do well in both.

sorry dude this may sound harsh but you dont sound really smart.

i'll share my experience with this.  my school is a public school, but its real fucking hard compared to other schools.  if I had gone to HS in southern va instead of northern va, I would have gotten a 4.0 instead of a 3.5

I bought into the bullshit my high school guidance counselors fed me.  I took every honors class in existence, and took 5 ap classes.  I got 4s and 5s on every test except spanish, because I drew pictures and slept during it.  I am a bigtime underachiever.  I got a 3.5 GPA and 1350 on the SATs.  I barely worked in school, and all my friends were the same way.  we were smart but just put in the minimum effort, basically.  if we had tried we all would have been contenders for valedictorian.  I am not trying to brag, intelligence means jack shit unless you work hard, but I am just not a hard worker unless I feel passionate about something.

unfortunately this was just under the range necessary to get into the top schools in va.  had I gotten
 a 3.9, I could have gotten into UVA, or william and mary.

so basically the only schools I could reasonably get into were James Madison, were i currently go, or VA tech.  both are good schools.  But I didnt have to take the honors or AP classes to get in, I could have taken much easier classes and my GPA actually would have been higher, for less work.


Summary


GPA matters more than anything else.  take classes you know you can get an easy A in.  if there is a class taught by a teacher who is known for being really easy, take it.  don't challenge yourself.  only take a few AP classes, and make sure the teachers who teach them are easy.


challenging yourself is dumb when it comes to your future.  challenge yourself with your career, not school.

i've said it before and i'll say it again HIGH SCHOOL DOESN'T FUCKING MATTER.  Its called HIGH school for a reason.  if you got bad grades, but want to go to a good college, go to community college first- it's cheaper anyway.  anyone can get in to community college.  when you transfer, your high school gpa, sat scores, act scores, how many times you got suspended, won't even matter.  so go ahead- get high before, during, and after class, don't go to class, kick the shit out of people, don't listen to "adults" who preach how important high school is, because it's all bullshit.  Go skiing and don't worry about a damn thing.  if you're in high school, know,  really KNOW, that none of the drama or trouble or grades matter.  

Your life, do whatever you want...

cause that is how those mormo hos go...

and whoever was talking about taking easy profs and classes was preaching the gospel.  you may receive a more enrichening experience by taking challenging courses, but when you get reviewed by your peers, whether for college entry or for a real job, GPA fucking counts.  take stimulating classes whenever possible as you will enjoy the material more and will develop yourself better, but do so in a balanced manner that wont harm your gpa.

i'm going to reply to a couple people so bear with me....
there was a couple people that said i got a 19 on the ACT, and that makes me dumb.And yes that is a pretty low score. But you try and sit in school for 2 years, not learn anything then try and take that test.

utah state........shity ass school

i really considered the community college thing...but i really want the freshman year. I want to sing in choir in college and join clubs such as an ultimate frisbee team. i want to have some late night crazy dorn antics. Buy going to communitly college "slcc" i would live in an apartment not meet anyone and live a year of my life not having that many friends and wishing i had went to a school we're i could be a freshman in the dorms.

there was like 10 people that were like "dude......i dont dont try in school......and no one else should either.

The fact is that if you try had in school apposed to someone that doesn't you're going to live a life with more money.....more fun in your later years, and it just pays off in the end.

You can still meet people if you have an apartment. I transfered from VT to RIT this year and got an apartment without knowing anyone at the school. If you have any people skills you'll be able to make friends and have them over. Then you'll meet their friends, and their friend's friends and have a great time. Dorm life isn't as fun as you make it out to be. Plus having apartment parties is fun as shit. AND you can blaze/drink with no worry of getting caught. One more thing- chicks dig dudes with a real place to live more than some kid in a dorm. It's science.

Word.  I'm a senior now and I have the school I'm applying to down.  I started out thinking I wanted to apply only to schools near skiing, but things changed once i started looking at schools near me on the east coast.  The only school I'm applying to now that's near good skiing is UDenver.  I mean,  being near skiing would be sick but I hope people have the foresight to know that college is an investment and about more than that.  Plus, some schools have long winter breaks where I can get a sold month straight of skiing in.
