I haven't done seymour yet, but I'd pick cypress over grouse. Although both places had pretty terrible parks when I went in Dec. and Jan. of last season. Haven't done any O/B exploring yet at either place (and didn't find anything like those cliff bands - they look sick). I've heard Seymour has the best backcountry.
Supprised no one has mentioned that Cypress has (or is planning on having) a superpipe this year, and that they added a bunch of terrain.
there are definitely several 20+ foot cliffs hidden around grouse as those pics of graham prove. graham claims he found another which we will be inspecting and bombing tomorrow. the gnar is there for those who seek, but i prefer if you leave the fresh landings for me to bomb.
went to grouse for my first time on wednesday and it was soooo foggy that you couldnt see clearly 10 feet infront of you, defianitely the worst conditions i have skied in, i go tlost tons cause i didnt know the mountain
Hemlock is within 1.5 hours of the city and its got cliffs, bowls, exposed lines, really fucking steep trees, tons of random fun lauches, top to bottom untracked wide open pow lines, and a park that is coming along. and you get discounts with your seasons pass to the city mountains.
we've got three jumps right now. 40 and 30 and 30. and about a dozen rails. park is being rebuilt right now because we have got about 130cm in the past 2 days.
you dont need chains for hemlock if you have winter tires and know how to drive in snow. I havent used chains here this year and i drove a mazda. the only problem is when people stop and cut off your route.
grouse has the best park right now but no jumps (unless you count 10 ft mini booters) and you pretty much cant shred alone at grouse for more than 3 runs if you say hi to the many skiers
if you want il shred with you
today was my first day at cypress and i have never been to the other two but the olympic pipe is damn fun (though too short). i will be there the next two days as well if anyone is around, i will have the movement kama sutras and be in black and gold with a helmet.
there were also some cool tree runs and the rails are pretty good too boot (though they need more big ones in a line)...
i mostly ride seymour because its like really family friendly and like the girls are like way hot and like my mom brings me to the hill
she even let me shred her mini van down lodge trail!
anyone see me that day? i was reppin American eagle head to toe(cept for my northern getaway sailor moon sandals) and then snake bullet ski blades?
props to the seymour fam, such a friendly place with the most laid back people for sure. and i heart slow ass double chairs, high speed quads just attract texans
yep for building a nice step down booter off a 30 footer off the backside. we hadn't hit it yet and i was just about to drop in when the patrol rolled up and told us to come down there, and so i did (the only thing was was that i hit the booter at the same time) which they were not happy about in the least and so they pulled me.
mang, we were thinking about hitting the gap on northside grouse when we got pinched too, just after dropping the cliff there. patrol didn't take our passes, but they were not stoked at all. plus it was christmas eve.
16cms overnight at grouse. 70 on the week. yeah bitches!
their pipe's olympic sized though, 22 foot walls defs not the best to practice on, major props to people who can get fair amount of air above the lip. I'm not sure if I want to dedicate myself to one mountain for the whole season, each mountain has its ups and downs:
Cypress = UPS - powder days; soo much steeps and tree skiing with no hiking, ski down to lifts
DOWNS - shitty park, other than the pipe, they dont know how to build a park, very long (im talking 45 min to an hour) lift ticket lines at times
Grouse = UPS - easy access, great food, okay park this year
DOWNS - very limited terrain, low elevation, TOURISTS, only two lifts so gets very crowded at times
Seymor = UPS - great backcountry, sweet for building your own stuff due to no patroling and frankly, they dont give a shit, good park, never much of a lift line, fast lift ticket lines
DOWNS - very hard access shuttle only goes to and from the base of the mountain so unless you own a car, you're bussing half the day, VERY SLOW LIFTS probably about 15-20 years old easily slowest chair on the north shore, again limited terrain compared to cypress = short runs
