This is getting ridiculous. Political correctness will be the death of our society if we allow it to continue like this. Does anyone in the general public really feel offended by colored lights?!? If that is enough to push you over the edge, you have one depressing life ahead of you. This isnt a joke.

Thats not the point. This isnt an argument of beliefs. Its the fact that if someone doesnt agree with what you do, you cant do it. If you dont agree with something that someone does, thats cool, but to bitch about it to the point that you they cant do it anymore is taking freedom away from people.

If you can't celebrate Christmas without colored lights, then you're not much of a Christian. The holiday is about rejoicing in the birth of a savior who sacrificed himself in order to absolve humanity of it's sins. It's supposed to be a time when the Christian faithful celebrate love, thankfulness and the spirit of giving, not tacky decorations covered in the blood of the poor Chinese kid who's hand got caught and mangled in the plastic Santa machine.

If you really want public Christmas lights, you need to be prepared to allocate similar resources for public funding of displays for every holiday, real or make believe (Steak/veggie-steak and BJ lights anyone?), that anyone in the town cares to celebrate.

that's absurd. if i lived in a predominantly jewish community that plastered menorahs everywhere i wouldn't bitch about it, that's their belief and they have a right to display it. i'd just put christmas lights on my property because i'm a christian. i'd go over to my neighbor's house and play dradle, and then i'd have neighbors over to my house to give them christmas presents, and life would be in perfect harmony.

If you want to use taxpayer money to pay for christmas lights then you also need to allocate money for hannukkah  lights, kwanzaa lights, crazy russian holiday lights, whatever, because funding exclusively one religions holiday goes strongly against the idea of separation of church and state.

And if you say that christmas is no longer a religious holiday so it's alright to fund decorations for it, thats even worse because it's using taxpayer money to aid in christian commercial holiday which is manipulating the economy to aid largely christian companies and manufacturers.

God's questionable but Jesus certainly existed. He was a very enlightened philosopher for his time. The whole question of immaculate conception and son of god is of course fodder for religious debate but theres ample evidence of Jesus' existance regardless.

i hate hearing stories like this. this kind of stuff makes me pissed off and im not sure if people do it for attention or they really believe that colored lights go against their religion.  i dont care if i see lights that are blue and white...awesome great for them but i dont want anyone taking away green and red lights...what is society coming to

Thank you, no one here understands that they didn't ban green and red lights, they just decided not to do Christmas color display on Government property.

It's basic separation of church and state. Don't spend government money or resources to endorse one religious event.

That isnt entirely true, They are cool with having lights and "winter displays" on government property, they are just insisting on using white lights and prohibiting previously secular icons such as santa claus. This isnt about the economics of the situation. Its about sanitizing all sorts of religious associations with the holiday, but WHERE DID THE HOLIDAY FUCKING START? CHRISTIANITY!

Again, from city property and governmental property. They aren't coming down on individual people with christmas decorations.

The argument comes down to the government spending taxpayer dollars to decorate government owned property with religious based decorations.

The decision is correct, and if people would step back and think about it without jumping to the premise that they are "banning the use of christmas decorations" in the whole town based off some vaguely written internet article aimed at stirring the pot.

Thats the point though! They arent deliberating on whether they are going to do decorations on government property. They will be there for sure. Its the fact that they are going to such great lengths to bring into question previously non religious items, such as colored lights and santa, just so that they will be PC and avoid any close call with someone being offended by the display of such items.

You are an idiot.  The decorations will be secular, white lights. Many different religions use winter lights in their holidays. Green and red are specific to christmas so they won't be a part of the city holiday display.

Also, I'm no christmas scholar, but I'm pretty sure Santa is a christian idea stemming from Saint Nick.

No one is allergic to santa here, it's just a question of what public money should be used to fund.

Santa CLEARLY represents Christmas.  you CAN'T argue that.  if he doesn't represent Christmas, what does he represent?  kindness?  goodwill towards men?  nice try, but no- he represents Christmas.  he's not a religious figure, but he represents a religious holiday.  that's a fucking no-brainer.  with that in mind, if they're trying to eliminate promoting religious figures and anything that inadvertently promotes a religious holiday, then why the fuck would they keep Santa?  if it means THAT much to you, go to Walmart and BUY A GODDAMN LIGHT-UP SANTA TO PUT ON YOUR FRONT LAWN!

The big bang says the universe has been around for about 16 billion years. The idea of God is a being who is beyond the laws of physics in our universe. God could have always existed infinitley into the past.

christmas is gross.  I'll admit, I like getting $$ on xmas. I look forward to it. But still.. Christmas is grossl over marketed in this country and its just a big huge marketing ploy to get you all to spend thousands of dollars on presents and crap for everyone in the spirit of Jesus. whatever. it doesn't make sense.  Go to church and make christmas plays about jesus if you wanna celebrate his birth...

I agree, this really doesnt make me mad at all.  One thing I could see them doing that I think would be fair, is let groups decorate city property.  Not just a free for all but like set up a permit where any religious group could set up their own decorations in certian areas, maybe bigger areas depending on the size of the group.

Alot of towns where I live set up like reefs and stuff on light posts and put up decorations. I think that the town putting up lights isn't a big deal but the town putting nativity scenes and angels everywhere is too much. Let the churches and temples put up jesuses, and menorahs.

If your talking about the celebration of the birth of a man that many people see as an exceptionally powerful prophet, messiah etc, then yes.  However celebrating Christmas on Dec 25 is not related to this, nor is the giving of gifts etc.  Jesus's actual birthday is somewhere in January, I forget what day.  The reason Christmas is celebrated on Dec 25 is that it was already a convient pagan holiday for the powers that be to transfer a christian celebration to and to try and spread christianity. The giving of gifts etc has developed and mutated from ideas of Christian charity etc into the commercialism of today.

Your right, most holidays and beliefs which people believe or solely Christian are actually pagan.  Heres something from wikipedia:

Now with the argument. If you're going to take out christmas trees, lights, and the christ out of christmas, you're not celebrating christmas. and you might as well not get the holiday and go to work, and let other people do whatever they want.

i honestly haven't thought about it because it doesn't matter in the least to me.  i really don't care how the universe started.  it happened millions of years ago and doesn't effect me, so i don't care about it.

if you want to lean on some god to help you solve all your problems and find the purpose of your life, knock yourself out, but don't try to use some religious mumbo-jumbo about the universe to try to "prove" me wrong.  i don't believe in some higher being, but even if i did, the world's so fucked up that i wouldn't bother giving said higher being a moment of my time.

Exactly, something must of started it into motion, just because this something started the universe it doesnt mean that it judges us after we die and watches us while we sleep, maybe it just doesnt give a crap. Who knows, it may even be stupider than us humans. It's really what people imagine it to be. And when people imagine one thing, forces it over numerous amounts of people by making a really outdated book in which it states it is fact, you get organized religion.
