so i have a choice of basically any reasonably priced (<$600) camera or camcorder
its gonna be more around $300 most likely
right now, I'm most likely getting a DSC H7 camera
but i could get a HD camcorder, minidv camcorder, etc., or digital camera
what would be sweet to get?

I would say a digital slr but tha'ts because I'm into photography and not film making. what are you interested in is the question. if photo I can try and help you out, if video.. I'm not gonna lie I have no idea so yeah someone else would probably have more useful info.

I'm well rounded in both fields (in college for both) so I could answer most questions. Seeing how you seem quite amateur in the field, I don't recommend you get an HD camera. It is slightly more complicated to work with, and much more complicated for compression. Any miniDV handycam will suit your needs completely. You don't need a 3 chip camera if you don't even know how to use it and manipulate it. If you don't understand the fundamentals of basic video camera operation, you would likely leave all of your settings on auto, thus you don't need to buy an expensive camera.
A decent dSLR for under $600 may be hard to find. I know the bodies go for around that price for a couple Canon models and the Nikon D70, but you need to buy a lens and know how to use everything. dSLR photography is much more complicated than you think.
If, of course, you want to get into more advanced camera operations and possibly dSLR photography, then go for it; but do not expect to be pro within the first couple days. It takes time. I've been doing it for years and I still do not get the product I want.

You can do plenty with a $300 camcorder. He isn't a film maker, he just wants a camera to shoot videos. Pretty much any soccer mom camcorder will do that. It records, and it captures. All you need. Hell sometimes I wish I had a tiny camcorder or point and shoot camera just because its convenient to bring along to parties and whatever. I don't want to go to a party with my D80 or my VX2000 sorry.

yeah, that's why I'm keeping my point and shoot. If I went to a party with a dslr and started swapping lenses people would be like wtf?

Being a photographer I can tell you to forget sony all together. they make good music stuff that's it. Their Video equip is ok but everything they have is way too expensive. you can get the same if not better quality in something half the price. Try Nikon or Canon for a digitall camera. Canon, JVC, Samsung, Panasonic, some Sonys for camcorder. You'll save alot that way

There are a couple of good camcorders 4 around 300, try best buy. They've usually got a good selection. As 4 a dslr, there are plenty that can act like point and shoots. Nikon's D40, D50, D70 and D80 all have an automatic feature. Just turn it on and shoot. However they start around 800 w/ lens up to 1200. Regular point shoot that you can fit in your pocket that has little or no lag should be fine for you.

First off I don't think the man is tryin to go pro right off the bat in cinematography. If you had read what he has to work with its 600 not 3 Grand dumbass. I'm not hatin on Sony I just know their shit tends to be more expensive and in my line of work the other, cheaper models do the same job if not better. You don't shoot sony anyway so before you go callin someone ignorant look at your own equipment.

im buying it with sony points
and i'm pretty settled on the H7, 8.3 mp, 15x optical, and it can even shoot low quality video if needed
but i was also kinda looking at a harddrive cam, either would be sick

well part of the reason why Sony's DSLR cameras are shit is cause they bought out Minolta which sucked anyway. Sony = Minolta
All times are Eastern (-5)
