hey my buddy wants to buy some skis and wants to know what size, hes 5"6 130 pounds and has never skied before in his life

Maytbe in the 160-170 range depending on how strong of a skier he is

if he is a inexperianced skiier should he go shorter or longer?

generally shorter with inexperience, shorter skis are easier to manouver etc.

That said, he would still want to be in the 160-170 range

I'd say stay closer to the 160 side if he has never skied in his life.

i would say 159-165 if he's never skied before and is that size

I would say 151 through 181 would be the whole range for all 5'6" skiiers, so in the 155-160 range for a beginner.

dude, come on, read the thread...

obviously the shorter the ski, the easier it is to ride...since i compare ski length to height in my head, i'll give you this - since he is an uber-beginner, the ski should come about to his chin/mouth

haha my skis come to my chin (with boots on). can't afford new ones.

haha, well, thats not sooooo bad, b/c i guess with beginner little kids, you size the skis to their chest, and this guy's friend is older, bigger, and more coordinated than little kids, so he should be able to handle that...once you get past the beginner stage though, you should get bigger skis b/c it will challenge you more and it makes you a better skier
