This evening some friends and I attended the premier of Playground. Luckily we had some free passes and only had to pay the 21.50 door price for a third ticket. The coupon door package with several weekday day ticket deals for whistler/crystal/etc was quite nice.
Of course, going into the theatre we know Warren Miller for his over-the-top cheesy ski films and expect nothing more, however this film gave us plenty more --plenty more to bitch about. To summarize, the movie was so awful we walked out before intermission.
From the start it was pretty clear that they had nothing more in mind then representing their corporate sponsors and fluffing up skiing to make all the yuppies in the audience woo.
Showing every skier with a corona (with your label facing the camera) or a jeep to the over-editing of the skiing (seriously i just want to see the entire shot of a skier hitting the jump and landing, stop giving me seizures) made us want to vomit. How much did whistler pay them to do the lifestyle section? are uae developers sponsoring? johnny mosely? really? he still skis?
this was the biggest corporate marketing campaign in skiing i have ever seen. have his videos always been like this?
We figured the sun valley condo/estate ski section was after the intermission .
Where did you get the free entry passes? There's a premiere near me soon, and I am planning on going. Getting the free lift tickets and stuff is reason enough. I enjoyed the one last year.
man thats bad to hear, cuz warren miller and greg stumph made skiing noticeable to the world...well the type of skiing that wasnt really being done..i will still support a premire if it comes to my town.
yes it's good to support skiing. at 21.50 a ticket for 6showings, nearly sold out, in a theater with a capacity of 2900, that's a lot of support. at least in comparison to the single msp showing at a smaller theater last month. hopefully the ski companies are the ones benefiting from this one and not jeep/chrysler and anheuser-busch. tic vouchers were from friends at k2.
at least it'll do a really good job on exposing newschool skiing to the general public (whoever sees this movie). i actually quite enjoyed the movie.  some cool scenes. ie: Dubai
yah thats one thing in the warren miller films i always liked, how theyd go to the craziest places in teh middle east that none had ever heard of in N.A. and ski them ^
I would say Dubai was also the best part,
the Youngs was impressive but made you realize how much you hate them because all they do is ride at such a young age.
Besides all that I liked the guy jumping out of the helicopter and just soaring for a bit...
the only good part was the last seggy and the majority of that wasn't even their footage. wall ride to down was really sick though. best shot in the movie
i enjoyed it, in my town the door charge was 10$ and that magazine kept me entertained in a few classes. the finally at the end with that dope house was sick
