So I've been working the same job at a restaraunt doing prep work and the occasional dishwashing. I get paid $8 an hour and work 24 hours a week. I am a senior in high school and now that ski season is comming im afraid that I won't be able to ski because of work. I already miss chances of hanging out with my friends all the time because I'm working. I like the people I work with but I hate the stuff that I do. My dad is best friends with the owner and he won't let me quit and my mom who once said that I shouldn't start working too young because I'll have to work the rest of my life won't let me quit either. I've tried getting fired for about a month and just gave up because they didn't even care. Tomarrow I am working 10-6 and I really don't want to go. should I jsut not show up and get my family and everyone who I work with pissed at me or should I go through another horrible eight hours?
Definitely do not take the approach of just not showing up. That's taking the easy way out and you know it. Try explaining to your parents your situation. Most parents will listen to their child, and if they make a good, honest argument, they will accept it. Tell them that at this point in your life, work is not your main priority. Skiing is a huge passion, and denying yourself of that passion just to show commitment to a job that you won't have for much longer is irresponsible. Maybe suggest taking on less hours or taking a leave of absence if they refuse to let you quit. But I'll reiterate, not showing up to work to get fired will follow you.
seriously man, fuck your parents. if they won't let you quit a job, then they are being way to controlling. it is your decision to work, they can't control that. sure if you need money, and you quit, i wouldn't be surprised if they say no you shouldn't of quit your job. if you want to quit, quit. your parents are gonna have to deal with the fact you don't like that job, and like skiing way too much to miss out on it.
wow before you even posted that I talked to my parents. They flipped out at me and said that I couldn't quit. They said I wouldn't be able to pay for my car which is only about $200 a month and I make way more money than I know what to do with. My parents said that I don't do anything else and I quit everything that I was doing. the reason was because I couldn't do anything else because I am always working
just quit during the winter and come back after all the snow is gone. I have the exact same job as you and thats what i do. just tell them you need to devote time to sports, and they should be cool with that. Then your parents may not mind eitehr, cause you will still have a job lined up for the summer.
If the manager is a reasonable guy you should be abe to just ask him if you can have fewer hours or take some time off for what you really like to do, if not just quit and tell your parents you'll get a new job that has less hours so you can still rake in the cash and have some free-time to yourself
So right now it seems like i'm stuck with this shitty ass job. Tomarrow I am going to ask for sundays off so im only working 16 hours a week. They are goign to flip out because last week they had a meeting saying that they were going to give everyone more hours and that we weren't workign enough for them.
dude im in the same boat. i work at target, and i love it there, but its getting so damn busy. and hey im working 10-6 tommorow too. and its just so crazy right now and their really loading me up on hours. and yea i wanna cut back for school, skiing, and indoor track purposes. too much goin on.
Just get an evening job/shift, working during the day isn't really the best thing for ski season. You can definitely work 20-30 hours a week and get in a lot of skiing, especially in high school. Just be grateful that you have time to work, because right now I don't have enough time to work or ski and it sucks. Oh, and if you have more money than you know what to do with feel free to throw some my way.
Map it out for your parents. Talk to and show them that you can afford what you need to pay for while taking one day off. Try explaining to them that you still need to do things that YOU LIKE TO DO. They know you hate working, so why take away something that relaxes you and makes you happy? Tell them you're getting stressed, and you'd like a couple of days a month for yourself.
just cut back your hours, if your in shcool dont work more than 20 hours, tell them you cant work weekends because of school work or something, then go skiing.
