top park skiers

Just wondering where you guys think the top skiers are coming out of...and why. Most seem to come from really small ass hills...probably cause there is nothing better to do than ride the park and pipe. I know I come from Ontario, and I can think of at least 8 sponsored athletes that have come from there, as well as 5 National Freestyle Team members.

Ontario's da shit. oh ya. We're actually getting a good scene going in southern ontario right now - now if everyone would just start listening to Doug and I and leave whatever resort you call home (weather it be horseshoe, moonstone, glen eden, or snow valley) and start going to blue mountain everyday you can than it would rule. All the hills are closed already (think moonstone and horseshoe might still be open - but horseshoe sucks and moonstone isn't important) but Blue and our park is the best it's been all year.

But ya - a ton of pros (in all aspects of skiing from racing to big mountain to jumping (both old and newschool) call ontario home - must be something in the water. Quebec and New England is a crazy breading ground of park skiers too - there is huge amounts of talent in Mount Snow alone that still goes unknown.

Yeah, ontario is what it's all about.

You don't have to wash dishes every day just to live in a cardboard box, so you can get in a lot more skiing time than in somewhere like whistler.

And now that Blue has a big park, with big hits and big rails, it's the place to be. And once there's a superpipe (next year maybe...) it'll be a full-on world class park. There's huge events coming our way next year too.

Darryl is right, if everybody stops going to all these smaller resorts with ghetto parks, and comes to Blue, we'll have a scene to rival tremblant and whistler.

Plus, I'm a park tech now, so if anybody has any problems with the park, they can be fixed in no time!

Ontario rules.

the east coast really seems to be putting out. so much talent flying out of every corner. ontario, though an odd place, seems to be leading in being home to many pro skiers. but those poor crazy canadians....they can't see that VERMONT KICKS ASS!!! darryl, stop licking ski boots and get off your ass. come ski the woods of vt. actually, stay where you are. don't poach our stashes, drunkard.

oh ya, forgot about the boot thing - it actually didn't taste too bad. and i'm quite comferable sitting right here... well - my bad is a lot more comfertable but hey. and you said putting out. hehehe.

Where is blue and the other 'big' ski hills in Ont? I'm probably going to be in Ontario for university next year. Its probably gonna be Western, Waterloo, Ottawa, or Queens. I know Ottawa is close to all the Quebec hills but I was wondering about the others.

there are no really big hills in Ontario, but blue is big in comparison to the other hills in ontario... Blue Mountain is about 2 hours north of Toronto in Southern Ontario. 3 hour drive from London, and about 6 hour drive from Ottawa.

Ya, Ontario and the East is leading the way now for park and pipe skiers. The West is getting away from that, moving stuff to the backcountry now.

I don't know where the best park skiers are from these days but I know what your talking about. Look at Nick Mercon, he grew up in Indiana (i think).

EX..Yeah I once took my friend from Wisconsin to Jackson Hole. He a Park monkey he can do 9s grabbed and corked moves but he just fell there. I made fun of him for so long! (There a lots of people that can kick ass in the park because thats they got)

its all about the park skiing....most of the people that come from hills just stick in the park cause you certainly cant find any big mountain lines around there...

Even big mountain people too. Moles, Phiefer, and I think Holmes came from Wisconsin. Easley came from Michigan. I think they might work harder too not taking everything for granted as well as only skiing the park.

Jeff Holden is from Ontario, Dan Threadway is from Ontario (as i said a few posts up in this thread - pro skiers from every aspect of the sport have come from Ontario). But I mean - honestly - we can't really live this lie anymore. Ontario SUCKS ASS. Our hills are small, terrain sucks, parks sucks (in comparison to good resorts out west), we hardly get any snow, the seasons are short, there are a ton of people who are always pissed off about something... Fuck, I wanna get out of here.

I guess it's cause we all learn decent technique skiing the shit ice hills of Ontario, and can take that technique to the big mountains. Although real powder skiing takes a bit of getting used to.

well ntohing can compare to val direne when you talk about shitty stuff.....

there is no way to get sponsored when you ski such a hill... all the cool sjops wont sponsor you caus eyou ski in the middle of nowhere, same with tha companies...

I dunno if ontario sucks that bad. Our park is getting respectable, and the WHOLE CANADIAN INDUSTRY is here, so there's a lot of sponsorships flying around. And where do the reps go? Blue mountain.

Cost of living is the big thing that's great. 'cause when you go out into the real world trying to be a pro skier and mommy and daddy won't pay for you to live in Whistler, life gets a lot harder.

Honestly, I bet I get more days in a season ripping park here EVERY DAY than if I was washing dishes 5 days a week in whistler. Sure the season is longer, but it would be so much harder to live there.

I say get good here, find a sponsor that will give you travel expenses, travel to large mountains to compete in big events, win, get in movies, get money sponsor, then move to whistler when you don't have to suck cock for gas money.

you may get more days from Dec-Mar...but dude, our season runs from Nov-Aug....and who cares if I spend 2-3 days per week not on the hill, I probably get more vertical in in one day than you do in 2 weeks worth of skiing.
And yah, there is a lot of sponsorship coming out of Ontario, but it's because the companies need the representation of their product on the hill. The problem is, that once someone from Ontario gets sponsored, they immediately want bigger and better things....so they move out west.

ya, sure ontario is good if you're just going for sponsorships (which i will admit I am in desperate need of 'cause I'm poor and all my shit is breaking on me) and cost of living - but as girl_jibBer mentioned - longer season (i'm so sick and tired of ontario's short season with pathetic amounts of snowfall), better terrain, better park, better party scene, and as Dave told me yesterday 'I bet even washing dishes could be fun if you're drunk'. I myself am starting to care less and less about making it as a pro skier, and just wanting to do some good skiing.

I think everyone forgets that only a handful of 'sponsored skiers'actually get paid. Most that are sponsored only get free gear, and earn their money from comps. The rest of us, who do receive free gear, still have to work our asses off.

but a lot of riders get sent to competitions all expense paid. I think that's what Doug was refering to.
