is there a fairly simple way to get footage off a vhs camera on to a computer?

The easiest way is to record from the vhs camera to a dv camera.  If you can't do that you, you could use one of these:

i'd say probably play the VHS on your TV then use a miniDV camera to capture it off of the tv.
