RESORTS OF THE CANADIAN ROCKIES FOCUSES ON TERRAIN PARK SAFETY WITH AN INDUSTRY-LEADING INITIATIVE

RCR cares deeply about the well-being of all of its guests and takes responsibility for their care very seriously. “We are undertaking an industry-leading initiative,” says Matt Mosteller, Senior Director of Business Development for Resorts of the Canadian Rockies. “All man-made snow jumps will be eliminated from RCR terrain parks this season.”




I sincerely hope that whoever filed the lawsuit that caused this is paralized from the neck down and is in horrible pain

6 fucking world class resorts across canada with amazing parks now have NOTHING for  parks...  there is not ONE park ANYWHERE NEAR US.... is the the EXACT equivilent  of every resort in colorado terminating the park program if you lived there or the same in utah if you lived there...how much would that suck for you guys

If you read this SIGN the RCR petition thread because you knows how much it sucks not to have a single park within a 700 mile radius of you.....

Idiots who hurt themselves ruin it for everyone...

Dear RCR,

As a resident of Montana, I have been lucky enough to be able to ski the Fernie park with some regularity over the past few years. I have been consistently impressed with quality and maintenance that I would normally associate with a much higher profile ski area. Please do not remove the park.

dude, we already had park passes last year in Stoneham and at the Mont Saint-Anne. They are still replacing our kickers by some boxes or some rails...

Of course it's about making money, but cutting short term costs definately does not guarantee an increase in profits. Operating costs (of which building and maintaining a park are part of) are only a part of overall costs at a resort. By nixing jumps, and perhaps eventually parks from their resorts, RCR is showing rather near sighted corporate vision. While parks are an expensive proposition, due to insurance and other costs as you mentioned, many elements of a resort do not generate revenue by themselves. However, multiple features together will draw tourists to the resorts and keep the local core content, and while visiting these resorts these geusts will in turn spend money on food, alcohol, accommodations, and the other "cash cows" so to speak. There are always alternative ways to approach things and jumping straight to the most drastic option in a rather deceitful fashion is a PR nightmare. Now perhaps those in charge have  properly weighed their choices, but from hearing the rationale in person and through press releases it seems that they likely have not. A well constructed and operated terrain park can add value just the same way as renovating a lodge, or spending money to host a world cup can. Ultimately RCR can do whatever it pleases with its resorts, but acting in this fashion probably does not make very good overall business sense.

I sincerely request that your company reassess its new policy for this
season that will effectively shutdown all terrain parks in the
canadian rockies. this will be a heavy blow to you financially, more
than you realize. freeskiing and snowboarding are skyrocketing in
popularity around the world, and without a park to ride at your
resorts, thousands of snowsports enthusiasts will be looking elsewhere
for a place to ski.

As a skier, everyday I ride up the chairlift, I acknowledge my
personal responsibility for my own safety. I believe that it is
moronic that due to one isolated incident, the threat of lawsuits
could shut down winter fun for thousands of my compatriots. Each and
every skier and snowboarder should know that when you ride, you are
responsible for you own actions and that you should play it safe and
not bite off more than you can chew. Once more, please consider the
pitfalls of your new policy and the  boycott of your resorts it is
likely to inspire if instituted.

Trees kill people and rocks too,  maybe they will remove all of those too.

They had the Park Pass system,  so it is controlled.  and skiing is dangerous anyways.
Money wise,  they might save in the end (a bit).  but have lost a huge part of their soul, the whole park there in my mind is dead if there is no jumps.  Yes there will be an effect on revenue,  So BOCOTT THEM that is all you can do. 
Then they will know how much saved or maybe yes maybe  Lost They have hard heads and wont change their minds.
But they can have rails which could knock you out also?
and Freestyle teams can do dSpins ect.  (They have their own insurance program anyways)
But what about all the Newschool up comers,  They really shafted you all !
especially if they dont refund anyone.  That is almost criminal because yes they have a Park. But it is drastically different from what it was.
and I agree it actually can make the Moutain more dangerous, because everyone will be cutting off, or Jumping on other trails (like in the 70's 80's and scare the Guests even more.
DEMAND A REFUND, SKI AT LE RELAIS THIS YEAR.

Again, why are you arguing against the sport you love? How do you know that taking out jumps is a smart finical decision for them? You know just as much as the rest of us do about RCR finances… Nothing.

 

You say that kid’s emailing them without addressing the business side of things isn’t helping the situation. I can guarantee that their emails have done much more to help our cause then your posts have. RCR resorts provide the best, and almost all of the good jumps around the Banff area which is where a lot of good skiers come from. The jumps at RCR mountains have developed some of the best pros out there right now.

 

Bohoo for park skiers? Go fuck yourself!!! I love those jumps and I am far from a park rat. You are making an argument (a poor one in my opinion) for a corporation that doesn’t give a fuck about skiing; all they care about is money. So remind me again why you insist on taking time out of your day to help get rid of our jumps?

I don’t think they put much research into this decision at all so, no that isn’t obvious. I think they made the decision because they thought it would look really smart and help them cut costs at the same time… They can say they are doing it for safety and call themselves industry leading while at the same time cutting out major costs. It’s an easy way out and if you skied at RCR resorts you would know they pull this shit all over the mountain.

Your two reasons for arguing their position don’t even make any sense. Understand and choose to go somewhere else? Louise has the best jumps around this area (which I just told you) so where am I supposed to go? The only other option would be Sunshine but everyone knows their jumps aren’t half as good. Why would we want to settle for that? If you want to help people write better letters then why don’t you take your superior business knowledge and formulate some good points to attack them on.

what nomensteven is trying to explain, and more or less has, is that if you want a business to pay attention the best approach is to speak in business terms. RCR will only reevaluate this decision if they begin to feel it financially, or through constructive argument you are able to show the benefits to keeping jumps open in their parks. Perhaps persuading Sunshine to build more and better jumps, and then taking your business there could be an effective option. Just telling the management at RCR that you and Fred love jumping so much and it sucks so bad that you cant anymore will not persuade them to invest the millions of dollars into insurance and other costs associated with building these features.
My last RCR pass was 3 years ago, and i will simply be taking my business to Sunshine as long as they provide better services for my money. It's all simple business principles really.

True indeed... yet Louise spends a good fresh million more than likely blowing snow just to open wiwaxy. And they make you spend $38 just to ride one run... then when 2 are open it is regular price... so I doubt they would be losing any money by jump construction. NO one goes to Fernie for jumps, or to Kimberly for that matter, plus they don't need to blow snow for that kind of endeavor. Naksika however rarely gets enough snow to open or stay open without blowing, and park is one of their biggest draws of everyday riders. I dont know about the shit in the east... cause Im not from there, but I bet park is a way bigger money maker for them than out west, so where are the kids going to go for jumps?

Around here, C.O.P. and sunshine for the most part.

Its a bad business move to get rid of your future... the fastest growing segment of on hill activity would be the "freestyle stunters" would it not?

Personally, I don't believe they have any end in mind, no future goal. Just whip up to Lake Louise and you can see that clearly. The set up is horrible, and it has been stripped of all its character. I don't ever see a place like that going out of business, but I don't see myself riding there at all... or Nakiska, or Kimberly, or Fernie, or any other RCR resort.

I think there is a lot of people who have the same mindset (around here anyways) as me, and I think that very soon you'll see them change their minds. Mostly for the money... but I think a tiny part will be that they don't actually want to be hypocrites. How can a corporation that brought superpark to the west ban jumps? you really havnt seen a park jump, till you've seen a superpark jump.

i signed it, and did it up. I have to say RCR is full of old conservative intrenched management that don't think out the box. They don't realise that  terrain parks have the biggest market potential in the ski industry.  I know everybody rags on Intrawest all the time, but they would never do something like this. I hate how the artcle says they are acting as leaders, when they are clearly just sticking their head in the sand.....in the name of " safety". 
 
I hate to break it to RCR but, snowboarding/ skiing is a DANGEROUS SPORT. You can put padding on all the trees, take out all the terrain parks, and make all the runs green circles but people will STILL get hurt and maybe even die. We are going down large slopes at speeds faster then most motor vehicles with little to no protective gear. 

In this industry we can take preventative measures to try and lower injury rates, but in the end snow resorts willl NEVER get a perfect season with no injuries.  Its part of the reason why skiing/snowboarding is so fun. Its that sence of danger that keeps us coming back for more.

you guys should organize something concrete, too. a lot of organized complaining may help, but chances are they have someone sitting in an office deleting your emails as they come and generating generic  useless statements aimed at pleasing the general public. burning their income and image will send a more direct message. some ideas include getting a few hundred people with shovels to go build a jump and ski it all day until kicked out or getting people with signs to stand in front of ticket windows and protest peacefully. keep in mind that the first is probably a bad idea and will only rally their anger against you, and the second must be done with care to send a message without actually breaking anything or getting other skiers angry at you. also consider getting pros to endorse your cause or petitioning companies  to withdraw sponsorship (if they have things like that signs in the park or a "sobe superpipe" idk). theres a great video out there about bikers fighting for the right to use skate parks and you could take a lot of ideas from that. personally i live 2500ish miles from there and will probably never ski at any of those places, so i cant really help with any of that grassroots hippie type stuff. ill send an email though. oh one last thing- get adults involved- theyre going to listen to a 40 year old gaper before they listen to you. also, write to the government (the canadian equivalent of like congressional representatives) and try to get them to tighten laws making it harder to sue mountains over people getting hurt at their own risk.

i want to repeat my suggestion that we go VT Open all over their ass.  train the entire mountian with snowballs.  now that we have no park, theres nothign to contain our youthful aggression and adrenaline.  we take it out on the gapers (daypasses only).

I can understand their view, but it is a bad stance. If this was to happen 5-10 years ago then maybe they would still be able to salvage some profit from the situation. Basicly what they are doing is shutting their eyes, ears, and everything to the largest growing market in the ski industry.  All profitable ski resorts in the east operate with terrain parks. As much as resorts think  carving will always be their bread and butter, numbers of recreational caving skiers are dropping, and twin tip skiers are growing .

This is without taking into account the effects of global warming.  Terrain parks take little snow to build, and do not need a steep slope to operate.  What RCR is doing is throwing money away. They could easily institute a park pass program, or an terrain park skier/snowboarder instruction program ( like the CSIA, or CASI with instructors and clinics), or even a park builder certification program. Take a real leading role in the industry instead of becoming the conservatives of the ski world.

Bullshit like this started to cause problems for the ski industry in Colorado, so the state legislature passed a law that makes it illegal for skiers to sue a resort. Maybe you should let your local lawmakers know about this, show them the petition. Go to the local media, too.

People need to take responsibility. If you hit a jump that's too big for your ability, that's your own fault and no one else's.

i remember thinking it was lame that WHISTLER made you sign pages of shit to use the black park but now i'm fucking glad..

if you sign the paperwork to get a pass then u prevent gapers or greedy folks from having a leg to stand on in court.

there is lots of other mountains out there with jumps. and for those of you who bought rcr passes, get your money back. Hopefully youll be allowed.

i emailed a sunshine rep the other day, to see if they will be expanding the park,  he told me, that they are putting $20,000 into new features for the new season. they also might be contemplating dedicating one snow cat just for jump building/ park maintainance. that would be killer. ill have to look into a seasons there if its not bad.
i know the whole RCR thing sucks. but, its not the end of the world. hopefully other resorts will see this as an opportunity to expand their parks.
