Saw this on Facebook. Not sure of it's authenticity, but looks to be so...

"All man-made snow jumps will be eliminated from RCR terrain parks this season."

"We have found that one of the main issues that increase the likelihood of serious injury on our mountains is big air," says Mosteller. "When we are making decisions about safety at our resorts, the big jumps in the terrain parks always come into the equation. We decided to make a change."

Continues Mosteller, "We are committed to providing our guests with a safe experience at our mountains. We realize that this change may disappoint some guests who regularly use these man-made jump features. However, we believe we have a strong moral obligation to not compromise the safety of our guests."[/i]

If they actually remove the park, I will take my business elsewhere.

My brother fell and broke his wrist on a Louise jump last year, and the first thing he said to me was "Fuck that was stupid of me," and then he proceeded to ski another 2 days with it broken cause he didn't want to waste his passes. People need to sack the fuck up and not blame others for their negligence.

they won't change their decision as they saved a few million by not buying insurance for a terrain park.  sorry guys RCR has gone where everyone new they would eventually go.  They can't afford the insurance without a major corporate sponsor and they are too lazy to go get one.

what pisses me off the most is that they're calling it an industry leading initiative. Fucking assholes, like do we expect every hill to take down their jumps now and also they're saying it's because of safety when we all know it's just cost cuts.

Funny how when superpark was in town they didn't seem to care.
I bet there is more injuries in a week from collisions at Louise than there are in a year from "big air" (snicker) related ones.

Can anyone say "we'll save about a million bucks per resort this season" ?

Oh and an industry leading initiative to take fun away from thousands of people is erring more on the side of "we live in north America where the legal system rules and justice is for none."

How Ironic will it be when injuries rise from there only being rails and difficult jibs... how I tell ask you?!?!?!?!

i'm writing an article about all this for school, and I need people to interview. I've contacted some coaches with AB freestyle, and I'd really like to talk to wade at COP to get his input on it, so if anyone has his contact info, send me a pm. by the by, I emailed matt mosteller asking what he though about the response to this decision, and all I got was a copy of the press release and this gem of a quote: "we have had both positive support and those not happy with the decision." i'd like to know where this "positive support has come from.

Saw that Matt molester dude on Global news tonight...He said that they feel they have a moral obligation to keep the resort users safe. Then they showed a snowboarder saying he's basically not a dumb ass and realizes he might get hurt hitting jumps and that it is a horrible decision on RCR's part.

Hi Matt,

My name is Mike Riddle. I am a professional freeskier and a frequent visitor to RCR Resorts. I am disappointed in RCR's decision to not build large table-top jumps in the terrain parks at any of your resorts. This decision is definately not a thoughtful "industry leading initiative," more likley it is a step backwards. Most users of terrain parks are well aware of the risks involved. There are other ways to make "safe" terrain parks that do not involve eliminating all the jumps. The first step is to develop a beginner's park which I believe RCR has done and plans to continue doing so. I realize that the main concern is the large tables and injuries that can result.

Other suggestions for a safer park that do not involve eliminating jumps:
1) Initiate a Park Pass Program: Whistler Blackcomb has been doing this for years for their Higher Level Park and has been quite successful at keeping people that shouldn't be hitting certain features away...and therefore lower the number of injuries

2) Build the larger tables as "Step-up jumps" - This reduces impact on landing whether or not the jump is cleared (you can still build them so it is safe to roll over the lip)

3) Keep the lips of the jump at even height as the landing so there is less drop time and less impact.

I have many more ideas that would make for a safer terrain park than the current initiative undertaken by RCR resorts....rails are by no means safer than jumps. The proper park crew can build a safe park that incorporates every kind of feature. I hope that this initiative is not a pattern throughout the industry. It is a very short sighted decision that will cost RCR a lot of business...families are looking for resorts where everyone in the family is happy and the elimination of jumps will drive people away by the thousands.

Please Reconsider...

What truly truly boggles my damn mind is that skiing is inherently dangerous. 
I can chose to make bad decisions off a table top or a cliff or in the trees.....why eliminate only one danger?  Are they going to close off every cliff and pad ever single tree in bounds now?
Seriously.  The reason most kids get seriously hurt in the park is that they're being stupid and doing stuff well beyond their means.  I can tell you how many times I've hit a booter and just grazed a stupid 8 yr-old kid in mid air or had to abort a last minute air because of total stupidity on the parts of parents and kids alike.  This has NEVER happened to me in Whistler, where they have a parks pass progrom and it's never happened to me at Blue Mountain (ontario) since they brought similar park rules.  RCR is really really dropping the ball here.

What's going to happen now?  Those same idiots killing themselves in parks are going to bring their shit to the backcountry or the local double black laden with cliffs and close that shit down while the ski po-po picks up their pieces.

Totally pathetic.

Additionally, I'm pissed that Sunshine is going to be a HUGE Zoo every single day now.

Right on.  Nobody forces you to hit that jump/booter, just as nobody tells you to jump that cliff or ski those damn tight glades.  Frig, I can't believe RCR made such an uninformed and stupid decision.

I wish I could get some of my money back from those ass-clowns.  I got a multi-area pass though.

I submitted this to the 'letters to the editor' section at the herald today. who knows, might get published, and if more people write in there'll be more publicity about it, which can't hurt at all.

I don’t believe that any skier or snowboarder needs a resort official to tell them that launching themselves 40 feet into the air to land on a slope of hard packed snow has some risk involved.  Generally, riders in terrain parks are well aware of the risks involved, and yet few, if any, would consider a move to eliminate all mad-made jumps as an effective way to promote safety.

 

An effective way to promote safety would be to follow the example of Whistler Blackcomb resort.  The resort offers three terrain parks; one beginner, one intermediate, and one advanced.  The advanced terrain park is completely fenced off and requires a separate park pass with a price tag of $15 to gain entry.  Skiers and snowboarders have been more than willing to comply with these conditions, and Whistler’s park has become a destination in its own right as a result of years of development and hard work put into the construction and maintenance of the park.

 

RCR will have accomplished one thing however; Sunshine Village will now find itself with a lot more dedicated customers.  Sunshine seems to have picked up on this possibility as well.  The resort is now offering early-bird seasons pass rates to those unhappy former customers of RCR, provided they present their RCR pass refund form and are able to give the full name of Sunshine’s terrain park.  Furthermore, $20,000 has been allotted to expand Sunshine’s terrain park for the 07/08 season.  In light of this and the fact that all other resorts in the area have no intention to follow RCR’s lead, it appears that this plan is not quite the “industry-leading initiative” it has been hailed as.

i read the article in the herald about it today, pissed me right off, its not at all about safety, and RCR reps are screwed up, before they said it had nothing to do with that guy suing for 14 mill a few years back, then in the article matt molester refers and talks about it

im amped about the shine though, i refunded my rcr today, gonna go pick up a sunshine asap!
