Considering a different Canadian team has been runner-up three years in a row I'd say they're not doing too badly as a group...

Ottawa is fucking nasty this year. Their chances are as good as any this year. Montreal is probably the only other Canadian team that could be any real treat, but there are a handful of teams the are better.

You do realize that Hartford is in Connecticut right?

We also tried to buy another team this year in Hamilton but were outbid at the last moment.
There are a ton of Canadian players on American teams, and Canadian teams do quite well for the most part. Hockey is huge in Canada, much bigger than the United States, for the most part. I'm not a hockey fan but it is nearly impossible to escape the sport, anywhere you go.

Quebec Nordiques reloacted in 1995 to become the Colorado Avalanche. The Winnipeg Jets became the Phoenix Coyotes in 1996. The Hartford Whalers (Connecticut) become the Carolina Hurricanes in 1997.
The main reason a lot of teams relocate is the availability of corporate revenue. Theres a lot more of it to be had in the US because the TV markets are much bigger.

There are also a fuckload more people in Denver than there are in Quebec City. And in Pheonix compared to Winnipeg, and Raleigh compared to Hartford. So it's way easier to fill the seats, and more importantly, fill the corporate boxes.

Remember the finals run against Detroit when the Canes were offering free tickets and free BEER to get people into the stands? Yeah. They don't need a hockey team in Raleigh. Watching hockey takes away from valuable NASCAR time.

I said easier, not easy. Carolina, Tampa, Miami, Atlanta, and Nashville should not have hockey teams. Phoenix is debatable. Give Hamilton a team, maybe Winnipeg or Kansas City and drop the rest. Bring the level of the game up.

I hate that I still cheer for the leafs, whenever they decide to not suck and win the cup is the day that rioting will occur in toronto, it shall be awesome!

The leafs will never be good again, because they don't need to be. No one on this board was alive when they won the cup the last time and they still have some of the most loyal fans (not including me) in all of North American sport. The ownership of the team has been jerking the fans around for 40 years because they know they don't need championships to sell $500 seats.
They call it passion. I call it stubbornness. Get rid of goddamn Mats Sundin and get Dion Phaneuf or some good up and coming Canadian player as your captain, and at least give them something to watch.

Yeah because Calgary would give up Phaneuf. In all honesty your post would have made sense before the lock-out. Now that their is a salary cap the leafs are in the same situation as the rest of the teams which IMO is gay. The teams like Toronto, Detriot, and Montreal should be winning cups far more often than teams like Carolina and fucking Anaheim(sp?).
on another note how the fuck does California have THREE teams.??
If it wasnt for Gary Betman the penguins would be somewhere in Sounthern Ontario right now. He was going to make it as difficult as possible for them to relocate to Canada. I hate that Americans are running the bame and know shit all about it.

Tampa? Dude, they draw better attendance than the majority of the league. Lets not get into these sweeping generalizations because they are warm weather cities.

^^ (Quote feature is being retarded.)
Thats awfully elitist. It's not about who "deserves" it more, it's about who can actually win games.

My mistake. Tampa does do well. I didn't check my numbers until now. Every other team I mentioned however floats around in the bottom 10-12 each year with Carolina occasionally breaking into the top half of the league.
I still still think 2 teams should be dropped, and 2 should be relocated. Kill Florida and Phoenix and relocate Atlanta and Nashville.

I would agree with you that I think the league is spread a bit to thin. The NHL just doesn't seem to be financially strong enough to support so many teams.
