Local government spending

Word my house is about 1 mile from my school so it was $130,000 for a 3 bedroom house with a tiny ass bathroom/livingroom/kitchen, but it beats living in a city with alot of crime. There is only 15-20 cops in my county and maybe 5 police cars and they dont get much to spend. School taxes is where it gets me and by me, my parents who have less money to spend on me.

bro the cheapest houses here are 300k, and they suck, super shoddy construction.

Oh god, not this shtick again. Just because there are policemen and firefights does not mean we are in a police state. The reason new stations are built is because of the need for newer facilities and to accommodate the growth of a city...what a novel idea!

its funny, in my hometown, nothing ever passes. Our schools are AWFUL but the people don't want to spend 5 more dollars a year on taxes so they never improve.

actually, i didnt get a speeding ticket.  the cop let me off for the speeding ticket because the only reason I was speeding in the first place was because I was having a migraine, I go practically blind when it happens and I was trying to drive home to take my med and I could barely see the speedometer.  I explained this to the cop so he let me off on the speeding ticket, but he still gave me a ticket for an expired registration.  it was expired by one day, and it was my mom's car.  i was trying to be brief, but since you pointed that out, thats what actually happened.  I didnt lie.

I am not saying you are living in a police state, I am saying that I am.  you are obviously living in some other better type of state.

I doubt the reason the cop pulled you over was because he somehow knew your vehicle registration had expired. Color me skeptic.

And your assessment of living in a police state lacks perspective. Did it occur to you that perhaps the reason there is "like no crime whatsoever" has some sort of correlation to the notion that there is "a cop on every corner"? People want cops because it keeps crime low, neighborhoods nice, and property values high. It makes it a desirable place to live.

Well you say you live in the richest county in the U.S. so OK.

not trying to brag im not rich but its just that crime/low income residents are linked, and there is no low income housing here, tiny little apartments cost 1500 a month.

and quinny, I lived here before all the development.  there was no crime before the upsurge in cops.  there has been one robbery in my town in like forever, and they caught the guy immediately

theres no reason to have argument here, you see the world one way, that all laws are perfectly fair and must be followed to the letter.  you do not believe that a lot of cops like to feel powerful by busting young people, maybe because they are insecure or just plain bored.  i see that millions of americans break the laws every day, but there is no constituency for law-breakers, only "tough-on-crime" rhetoric from each new crop of politicians.  no one wants to be soft on crime, to admit that our prison/justice system doesnt work.

you dont have to believe what I think, that its pretty ridiculous that I have done 200 hours of community service for getting caught with alcohol and pot two times.  i may have broken the law and acted carelessly, but it was a victimless crime, if even a crime at all.

go and talk to someone whos been in prison.  i have talked with a couple people.  they have perspective that you and I don't.  like I said, there is no point in arguing though.  you believe what you believe, and i believe what I believe.  doesnt seem like thats gonna change, especially since my beliefs are based on reality and real experiences.  oh and for the record, I am not alone.  all my friends who range from ultra-liberal to conservative to libertarian, hate the cops around here.

uh excuse me, did i say he did?  I just said I have never gotten a ticket for speeding, which is true.  do I speed?  yeah sometimes, but not very often, and only when I know I can get away with it.

he didn't say that, he said he was pulled over for speeding but let off because of a migraine. but he did give him a ticket for expired registration. and just let that thread go man jesus christ quit ruining his thread with arguments he doesn't want to argue about that so leave him alone...

I said earlier in the thread that more police and firemen are needed for a growing city. You mentioned a development so that comes with the assumption that there has been growth, thus the need for increased coverage to maintain the lack of crime and overall value of the community.

And no, I do not think all laws are fair. But it is unreasonable to blame a policemen for the laws themselves. They exist to enforce them, not to create them. And the reason you have had sour experiences is because you have been caught doing things the law prohibits. Blame yourself, not the policemen. You're shooting the messenger.

believe me, I do.  but I still can't help disliking them.  i feel that laws don't need to be enforced too strictly as long as someone is not disturbing the peace or hurting anyone.  its like in a lot of areas, if you are smoking a joint on your porch or in the woods somewhere the cops dont really care.
