Another type of base that became popular about a decade ago are "black bases." They consist of carbon black particles (5-10%) added to the polyethylene and sintered. Carbon particles stay in the amorphous area.
The theory is that black bases will have less friction on dry cold snow (less static electricity); and will avoid the dirt sticking to the base on wet dirty snow (harder surface).
It's important to remember that these Black bases need to be "recharged"
occasionally with a Graphite Wax.
