Favorite Ski Mountain in Austria

So me and my dad are heading to Austria this winter--he does business over there-- and were planning on shreddin some Austrian pow while there. What do you Austrians- and other NSers- reccomend a good ski mountain(s) to ski. We will probably ski 3-7 days I forget what he was thinking. The only mountains Ive heard of in Austria are Arlberg and St. Anton... If you could give your fellow NSer some help would be much appreciated :) Thanks

If it's your first time there, Arlberg is a great choice (you also get Lech and Zuers in the combined pass price). It's about 2 hours by train from Zurich. The size of the mountains makes the U.S. resorts look small.

Innsbruck is also a good choice, you can stay in a nice, lived-in city, and they have various ski hills of different sizes nearby, like Stubai, Axamer Lizum, Seegrube, etc. 2.5 hours by train from Munich.

Kitzbuhel...but only because I wouldn't be a skier if my dad hadn't rented a house there and learned how to shred in the 70's while he was in the army. Totally got him addicted, thanks Kitzbuhel!

Arlberg IS St. Anton.

I really like Silvretta Nova, it's smaller though.
Mayrhofen and the whole Zillertal is also a good place to shred.

google for ischgl its a lot of fun there
and the powder is only for you and me
because no one is skiing powder theres
just an awesome resort and super unknown

try it



i am riding the hole winter there and there is even a propark

i'm going to Klosters over christmas and again in feb

Part of the same area that features Davos, The Davos ride is there (obviously), same sort of thing as the Verbier Ride. Park wise i dont thing it is great, but freeride is meant to be good.

I'll get back to you in the new year with more on the terrain and snow conditions, atmosphere, town etc.

lech is ,meant to be super expensive, dont know much about kitzbuhl (spelling) Give michaelbc or rastafarider a message and they will fill you in Michaelbc is really knowledgeable about europe, lives in switzland

i've been there this past 2 seasons and for me the best were, Mayrhofen (best park in europe with livigno) st anton, like someone said before, makes the rest look small!), innsbruck its very good cause you hace 8 different mountains to hit, i would choose Nord park (best park from those 8 mountains)
and SIlvretta Nova, incredible BC and really good park

ya, good advice this. mayrhofen would be good, sick park but it would be doing laax, les crosets superpark.ch or les 2 alpes a bit of a disservice to say its the best in the alps. still sick though.

innsbruck has loads of mountains nearby that offer everything, and its a proper town- the park city of the alps if you will!

i think silvretta nova would be best though for the best park/pow balance: as ipswich said, michael_bc is your man for swiss/austrian advice...

Oh and Mayrhofen is shitty for park, I don't know where that guy gets that, but the whole Zillertal area is so big and has so many sick spots to shred pow.

I don't know where you are from but if you are looking for Austrian parks check www.snowparkguide.com... For pow just grab a map and draw a straight line from Zurich to Innsbruck. That line should cross St. Anton and Silvretta Nova for example, but everything along the way is EPIC: Diedamskopf, Kaunertal, Ischgl, Kühtai, Lech, etc..

as michael_bc said Diedamskopf is sick (rage filmed there last season or the one before) and the whole area named "bregenzerwald", with warth, damuels, diedamskopf. Nice, small areas with some nice parks but a lot more powder. Some nice shred in den woods and sick spots for BC kickers. There aren't as many freeriders as on the arlberg, which means a lot mor first tracks.

Sport Gastein was my favorite when i went out there. Pretty much anywhere is a good bet though. I dont think you really can go wrong in the alps. When i went out there it wasnt long before we discovered that they dont really ski off the trails in Austria or at least that area and we had fresh snow from a week ago that was still good.

St.Anton is prob your best bet. If its your first time in europe, that mountain makes in much eaiser for new comers.

I'd pitch the Arlberg again, it seems to be the best in terms of convenience, ease of getting there, and size. The train station is right along the main Inn Valley line, so you've got plenty of trains going in both directions (I think all the EC/IC trains stop there without exceptions). 
You pretty much get out of the station and you're in the middle of town, no postbus transfers needed.
Should you have more time, then I'd consider basing yourself in Landeck, where you can reach the Ischgl / Samnaun / Silvretta area easily.

The Mayrhofen resorts are excellent also, although somewhat more spread out than the Arlberg. Last season was disastrous, so there was very little of the white stuff there. The town's rather low in elevation, so the snow was really up at Hintertux.

St. Anton looked sick when I went by. All around though don't worry about the park, when I got to Chamonix I was thinking okay a little pow bunch of park urban rails. But Ive skid more pow than anything even if there isn't any pow. The natural terrain here is epic but the park can be fun here as well. As for Austria just find natural shit and Im pretty sure any place you go will be really sick.

Yup I have to agree, this place is huge! Tons of trails. You also got Shruns, and HockJock around the corner.


Its in a valley called Montofon or Montafon, there are also 4 other ski areas within a 20 minute drive.
I was there last year... though the season was weak for snow... still was a blast...but zero nightlife. Hopefully its in full swing this year. Im going back this year.

st. anton/lech in the arlberg region are my favourite for off piste/bc, but dont get your hopes up for the park cos st.anton doesnt really have one and lech's is pretty small, if u wanted more of a park resort go ischgl or mayrhofen
