No its not fuckin fair. LIFE ISN'T!! My parents worked their asses off in highschool,college, medical school and 8 years of residency. Thats 20 years of hard hard work. So they developed a skill and got good jobs. My dad works 6 in the morning to 8 at night with taking call once a week which means sleeping over and just working through the next day. He works 80+ hours a week. Thats a lot. He makes a shitload of sacrifices. So in fact it is fair. He does the time he gets the money. Look this society isn't 'happy-go-lucky everyone's equal' It doesn't happen...It doesn't work!! If someone works harder and has better skills...then hell! he deserves the money he makes. Its not right so say ' well thats not fair because I'm a lame ass bum, but its still not fair because i deserve the same thing'

one example though, of how backwards society has become -> think about where your produce comes from. it comes on a truck from across the continent. but, why aren't our fruits and vegetables locally grown/cultivated/bought? why do we need to burn thousands of tonnes of fossil fuels in order to transport produce to a region that is able to grow its own crops?? this makes me just as furiated as phrosty would be if somebody called him a left winger.

Obviously there is no system that is perfect, anyone who has done any small level of economics at school or Uni would know this. Each system has its drawbacks. Its suggested that the best mix is a 75% free market/capitalsit and 25% government intervention. So that includes countries like America, Canada, Australia and New Zealand and since many of us live in these countries we know our standard of living is generally a lot better off than those with more socialist/communist/government involved such as China, Russia. China is improving only because it is allowing more capitalist style policy. Sure the ideals of socialism might be good but in reality (and as history shows) they don't work.

As for Brands, they are actually good (like marketing in general) because they inform the consumer about the product. If you here the word Coke you instantly have a view/attitude about them, its not necessarily good or bad. The only downside to a brand is when you have a view about a brand that has been formed by misleading information. So it isn't the big brand that is bad but the misleading information their executives feed you.

its like an ecosystem every thing depends on every thing else and if something is disrupted it could end with horrible consiquence so if big buissnesses and advertising allows us, the consumer, to have are lives run smoothly i say hurray

Has anyone read the book 'no logo' by naomi klein? i purchased it today, and the girl at the register asked if i was taking political science at a local college. I said no, and asked why. She said it was suggest reading for that course. Nothing in the book will be tested on in the course, it was just suggested reading. Im hoping this will give me a well rounded opinion on the things i argue about.

A lot of professors of political science probably teach the book. My uncle is a professor of political science and he does. But that doesn't mean that they're festering dirty washed up hippies.

I've read most of No Logo (got a bit boring towards the end). Its quite interesting but it is really from the one perspective, and it doesn't really devle into the economics of it. While it has some statistics it still doesn't quite cut it

also, i wasn't talking about importing produce from another continent, i meant, and i think most interpreted what i said correctly, as purchasing produce from a far away region, all the while being able to grow and cultivate such produce in one's hinterland.

I think maybe something that we all might want to think about is that there is a differnce between being a corporation grassroots, successful or otherwise and being a responsible corporation.

Lets face it, like it or not, we live in an industrial/corporate society, and it would take an event of apcolyptic porportions to put us in a state where we could survive off of an agrarian neo socialist or communist system. Capitalism and Corporations are here to stay (pending that disaster of course).

What we should hope and strive for is RESPONSIBLE business - which is something realistic that we can directly infulence though our buying habbits. Don't like the Gap? Great - buy from the American Apparel company - steatshop free threads from the US. Don't like Starbucks? Buy your coffee from Bridgehead or Oxfam, and be sure to ~tell~ the company that you are displeased with what you are doing and why.

Ceasar Chavez organized the United Farm Workers in California through the 70s and 80s in California and organized a hugely succssful boycott of California Grapes due to the pesticides that were being used.

Buy from corporations that you respect. Exercise your rights with your credit card and cash.

ive never read a better arguement on NS. both sides put up a great fight, but ihave to side with capurnicus, capitalism just makes more sense. if you go to to school and work hard to get a good job you deserve to make big bucks, and if you coast throuh life and get a shitty job, you deserve to make shitty wages.

Yeah, that's the way it is supposed to work though! what about the people that work three jobs and live in the ghettos?! I don't know about capitalism making sense or not - nothing in its extreme does. A healthy and ballanced dose of 2 opposites usually works best. The Taoists were pretty smart. Picture a capitalist society with the heart of a welfare state - welfare meaning taking care of core essential thing like health care, day care, social services, public transportation, etc...to a worthy and respectible level. Individuals are free to pursue lives of personal gain, earning the bucks if they have the skills and the moxy to do so, but those who do not or cannot are looked after by the state.

The key here once again is that those who are in a position of private and public sector power use that power responsibly.
