college isnt not going to help you. you can still be a ski bum after going, and then you have more options anyway if that doesnt work out.

Unless you have some unusual skill or get very lucky, its doubtful that without college you'll find a job with a salary capable of supporting a family.

The reason society tells you that its worth studying and going to college is because in 20 years that could be the difference between making 30,000/yr vs 60,000/yr. You may claim that money is irrelevant now, but if you ever want to buy a house or have kids (especially if those kids decide to go to college someday) then money will inevitably become an issue. Living paycheck to paycheck to barely meet rent or mortgage payments can be an uncomfortable way to live.

you guys are just what im talking about, you have this idea that money is the deciding factor of success. ill tell you this, having gone to private school full of rich asses, none of them are one bit happier than a poor person, sure they dont have to work hard and all that. but when you dont have problems like paying the bills and feeding your family, other problems like social life and all this stupid shit seem really fuckin huge.

and, im not saying dont go to school, im saying dont go to school just because its expected of you or because you think you have to, go to school if/when you really want to for your own reasons

Shit dude i agree with that. I go to a Private school as you didl, and i feel as though im the only grateful, appreciating one. Like im surrounded by kids who are disrespectful to their parents, steal money from them, and genreally dont care about their feelings. Its pretty fucked.

yes, rich people do create problems in their lives that are not really a big deal, but wouldn't that be a huge luxury to have?  Wouldn't it be great to only have to worry about which lacoste polo you are going to wear or which car you are going to drive to school.  It may seem like these rich people may not be happier, but they sure as hell have a lot less to worry about than someone who has to feed a family of 4 on a salary of 30,000 a year. 

Better yet, try to go skiing or take your kids skiing on a salary like that.  Like it or not, skiing is a rich persons sport and if you want to continue to do that as you grow up and have a familiy you better have the money to do it.  Why not just go to a college close to a mountain, party it up, and graduate making 50,000 dollars a year?  That doesn't sound too bad to me.

^I agree with you one hundred percent, I go to a richa ss school aswell and i work for rich as people. Let me tell you it sure would be refreshing to get away from all that for once in my life. Not only that, if your nt making alot of money based on your own decisions, and you are happy with what you are doing, money is the last thing you are worried about.

Ok, you made a good point... However, having a reasonable amount of money will help you enjoy things you wouldn't otherwise, such as skiing, traveling, going out. And having a college degree can help you get a job that might be a pleasant and enjoyable one, all while making some decent income. It seems like you are generalizing that everyone who goes to school gets a business degree and becomes a stock broker or whatnot. There are TONS of careers and choices that involve more or less money... I'm in 2nd year, and I have no idea what I want to do. Hell, whatever I graduate in I probably won't follow up at all, but my degree can also be used as a backup if I ever need it then.

School is not just about learning anymore. Its about babysitting children for the parents may go to work. Later in highschool, its a mean to put children away to prevent pety crimes such as vandalism. Learning is a bullshit term that bureaucrats use.

This has alot of truth in it. School teaches you to be an obediant, submissive employee. It doesn't do shit to help you reach your potential as a free thinking entreprenorial (sp?) type.

People who seek out and generally overemphasize the value of money in a human's life tend to judge themselves and others based on the clothes they wear, the cars they drive, the place they live, and all the other material things that money can buy. You are none of those things, and they say nothing about you. If you think those things give you some kind of value as a person you are likely a hollowed out shell of a human being and if you lost those things you're friends would prob ditch you as well. Yes, with money you can be a dick and some people will still tolerate you, but these people are likely as soulless and shitty as you are, and they're gone as soon as the money stops flowing.

Not saying everyone who has money is like this, some people are cool as shit and just happen to have alot of money, but when someone makes money and the the aquisition of material things their main focus in life, I'd have to say they will prob look back on their life and realize what a fucking waste of time that was.

People pile shit they don't need around themselves to try and give meaning and value to their lives, but that's just not how it works. Go live your life and do what you want to spend your life doing, don't spend it as a slave to a system that rewards you with imaginary credits which you can exchange for shit that won't make you happy in the long run.

one idea he talks about is the gradual increase since about 1800 in the age people go to school until. by creating a bigger and bigger section of people who arent working, but are consuming it saves the economy. think, if everyone started supporting themselves at age 10 or 12, there wouldnt be nearly enough jobs. school's real purpose in society is to keep people out of the workforce.

plus, people can not retain information that isnt relevant to their lives. think about it, 99 percent of what you learned in school, you kept untill the test and then lost it. think about taking a test that you got an A on last year, this year, i guarantee you would straight up fail it.

School's about more than just the individual facts you learn, it is more about learning methods of thinking. Education teaches people how to write and think analytically which are two very valuable skills in the modern workforce.

Also, Daniel Quinn has brought up some relevant points about the dangers of the human population's exponential growth, but regardless of his opinions the trend of increasing education isn't the result of some economic planning scheme. If you studied economics you'd realize that there is an equilibrium point at which the benefit of joining the workforce outweighs the benefit of staying in school. The high wage labor pool is becoming more competitive as a result of the increase in population which has resulted in higher payoffs for remaining in the education system. Sixty years ago you could drop out of high school and support a family with a well paying factory job, but today the harsh competition of the global market means that most dropouts will be stuck in low paying jobs incapable of supporting a middle class lifestyle. College is a large investment of time and money and if this investment didn't yield a considerable return, not so many people would attend college.

Just Do what you love, if in order to do what you love requires getting a higher education, then get it. If not then dont. Thats the bottom line

i think a few people took this thread the wrong way.  he isn't saying that school is automatically bad, he's saying don't go if you aren't going with a purpose.  that purpose doesn't even have to be making money, it can be something as simple as wanting to help people (social workers, nurses, teachers, etc), but don't waste your money (or your parents' money) and your time going to college if all you want to do is party and have fun.  it's taken me three and a half years to figure this out, but i'm taking next semester off to make money and try to figure out what exactly it is that i want to do in school.  i had two really good years to start me off, but the past year and a half of school has been shit and it's been because i haven't had any idea what i want as a major.  i've tried out six different programs over the past two years and haven't found one that suits me, so i'm taking time off to really focus on what i want to accomplish.  all he's saying (and the title of this thread is very misleading) is that you should go to college to accomplish something, not just to have fun and party.  it's pretty simple, but i guess sometimes people need to start a thread about it to help it make sense to them.

Assuming that a college education will lead you to live in a bubble and think about meaningless things is ridiculous. it's quite obvious that not all college graduates live in beverly hills and worry about their convertibles. If you have the motivation, and actually learn something in college I think your life would turn out the opposite way because education allows you to think more critically and sharpens your mind. plus, you'd have more opportunities for work.

that being said.. I'm an advocate of most people taking a year or two off school to work or travel since so many students go into college with little life experience.

I completely disagree with you on multiple fronts.

First of all, these people who you speak of are most likely like Einstein, who most think did horrible in school.  This is WRONG.  Einstein was an amazing mathematics and physics student, but he did horribly at english.  Most people of any real influence did have a college education, and did quite well in their specified subject, and if they didn't they had other outstanding qualities.  You don't reach the top being mediocre, sorry.

Also, school is not to "babysit" you.  Even if someone doesn't remember everything about a specific subject the process of learning and how to deal with stress is extraordinarily beneficial later in life.  Also, think of math.  Sure, you wouldn't ace a hard precalc test but without learning the subject you could never get through differential equations.  I do not believe school is based on pure memorization but rather it equips you with the background and shows you the tools to get the information you need.  If you seriously think the only purpose high school serves is to babysit kids, then think of how many people you would hire that dropped out.  Obviously they only saw it as a "babysitting service," right?

but you will be more likly to get a good job you enjoy and are in control of your life. if you dont go, sure you will have fun at first, but what happens when it comes time to make rent and rais a family on a mcdonalds pay?

neither of my parents went to college, but our family is fairly financially secure and they both got jobs in an area that they love. i think getting a degree is a good idea, but isn't always neccessary for success and/or happiness.

Anyways, what I'm saying isn't that money necessarily leads to happiness or that without money you can't be happy doing what you love. What I'm saying is that lack of money often does lead to unhappiness and its a good idea to start planning your future right now.

Its worth rationally thinking about the consequences of that lifestyle before committing to it. You may never be able to afford ski equipment or comfortably provide for a wife and children, but if you'd be content with that future choose that life and enjoy it! Its all about what future will make you happy.

    I disagree with you on many parts. The first one is money. Money is a very large deciding factor in our society. Sure you can have a great life without it, however you will need to be very go free that way. This is especially true if you plan on living an active lifestyle. No I am not talking about gear, or even housing or food. I am talking about medical issues. It is very easy to fuck yourself over skiing, biking kayaking or in almost any sport. Even if you tread carefully. For example, I had a non cancerous bone tumer in my lower leg that resulted in my leg breaking when it should not have. This medical issue is not very rare either. In fact statistically 1/3 males age 15-20 have one. After breaking my leg and having the non ossifying fibroma surgically removed the medical bill was in the neighborhood of $12,000. If I was not covered under my family medical insurance and was trying to live off of $30,000 a year I could not have afforded the necessary medical treatment.  The result would be that I would no longer be walking, and in all probability be a homeless, jobless cripple for the rest of my life which would not be very long.
   This is not the only place where money becomes increadably valuable. Any one can get a tooth infection. Dental work is not cheap, and cheap dental work is not good. Without the necessary dental work such infections  are often fatal. Oh, and if you need any ocular correction glasses aren't cheap.
   I however, do not have to worry about the financial side of health care since my parents both got good enriching jobs that they enjoy that also happen to come with a good salary (at least my dad's) and benefits including health insurance. Both of these jobs require post high school education.
   This brings up one of the greatest things that comes with education. You are given freedom. If it was not for education we would all still be peasants in a feudal system akin to that existing in Europe 1000 years ago. Education brings with it a higher level of thinking. Without this not only would you be unable to challenge anything, but you would also not know to challenge anything. It was not until the rise of Universities throughout Europe that a noticeable change was visible in the lives of most people. The life of the common European changed very little from 700AD to 1000AD. In our current society where higher eduction is not only widely avalible, but also strongly encouraged we have seen dramatic changes in the life of a middle class citizen between 1700AD and 2000AD. This very favorable change in society came about only because of Education.
   Education also provides freedom from a strict class society. Now people are not stuck being a peasent but are able to do what they wish. Education has made the statement: "you can do anyting if you set your mind to it" true (to a point) but now if someone wants to become a writer they can or a lawyer or doctor. They can through education. Going to college gives you the opportunity to do what you want with your life. Not only that but it also gives you a better idea on what you wish to do with your life. College not only gives you more options but allows you to explore those options more.

If you don't go to college and instead become a ski bum (I am pretty sure the lifestyle will wear off by the time you are 40) you will probably later wish that you were not stuck doing work you hatted at $10 an hour. However you won't have other options avalible. If you do go to college you can always become a ski bum latter. So give college a chance. and go not with a set goal in mind or the idea that it is something you have to do but because it is an opportunity. An opportunity to find out more about yourself and possibly discover your one true passion (It may not be skiing). Remember College is not final, it does not force you down one path but gives you the option to chose your path.

my parents said that they would pay for my school if i went right after hs. So i did. Now i'm going ot graduate in a year and THEN do some doing some ski/surf bum type stuff. just get that shit out of the way.... you'll have alot more fun at college when your the same age as everyone else!

see i assuming that since you went or are going to a private school that you are not poor, so why not just go to college get a degree in something easty that you like and tthen become a ski bum afterwards. That way atleast you will be making money to support yourself. Oh and saying that you will go to school if things don't work out being a ski bum how realistic is that will you really want to go back when you are 27 and you realise that you won't be able to live this way forever. Also where are you going to get the money for college then, because if you become a ski bum you are going to make just enough to get by.

I also believe that many people have been brainwshed (many of the people posting above) to belive you need a higher education to be "happy." There are many happy people in this world that did not go to college. If you ask these people what there income is like, it's probably not the best. So I think one needs to ask themselves what their definition of "happy" is, and decide if you need secondary education to be happy or not.
