WHY SKIING IS STILL GROWING.. and snowboarding isnt...

sooo basically i have come to realize tha snowboarding has finally reached there peak. every trick has been done and mastered and now all it is, is the same tricks just diffrent spots and styles. but honestly nothing new in snowboarding has happened in a few years. obviously its still dope as hell.. But as a skier and all my other fellow skiers on here we are still growing rapidly. i know at some point the same thing will happen, but as for now its are time to shine an show people that skiers F*ckin kill it !!! there is so much progression in this sport right now and i cant wait to see whats next. But for what i know we are still growing every day and kids are pushin the limits and it awesome. cant wait to see whats next in the sport.. keep shreddin and expanding, we are the generation that has changed this sport. lets keep that sh*t up!!!   word.. hope u all agree

snowboarding isnt done growing, just skiing is growing sooooo much faster now.  its pretty cool, like look at skateboarding 10 years ago,  its gotten better, but still a pro back then could be a pro now and stuff then is still just as cool now.  
freestyle skiing 10 years ago pretty much didnt exist.  freestyle skiing 5 years ago obviously existed but it was pretty damn gay and crappy compared to now.  and thats 5 short little years.

snowboarding has already grown a lot more than skiing as you mentioned. the sport is just starting to get a bit more legit with snowboarders being able to get away with being themselves and representing their own style and what not. i'm not saying it has fully progressed in that sense, it definitely still has a LOT to accomplish. but it is still farther than skiing. as for what is possible on a snowboard, it is really endless, there are still so many tricks out there that either need perfecting or are still just waiting to be done. and there will never be a point in it where "everything possible has been done."

as for skiing on the other hand, you really have to be just like everybody else at this point. i know things are changing and people have "sort of" began to branch out from the norm but in reality the majority of the companies still want jr. dumontz and steezyjibber69's who follow the basic trends to represent their company. i'm not saying that every up and comer is the exact same person. but in skiing today as a whole there isn't much variety out there, which will definitely change in the future! as for tricks in skiing, it is CRAZY how many tricks there are out there waiting to be done, like absolutely insane. personally i don't think everyone feels that way at this point (which will change) so they resort to more spinning, flipping, changing direction of spins, blah blah, etc. and there isn't really anything wrong with that. people are allowed to do whatever it is they want to do and no one can tell them that's wrong, but i really wish some skiers could look out the window of the "ski industry" and know that there are other sources in the world to get your inspiration from.

bottom line is:
skiing and snowboarding will always be progressing in their own way, right now i can't really see skiing surpassing snowboarding but i'm also not psychic.

snowbaording isn't done, but it has been around longer so now its progression is slower than skiing which is still preety new. skiiers also go so much bigger. how many snowbaorders are 20 feet out of the pipe? but dumont is. skiiers had to go bigger in the past to get anything over snowboarding and now that is fueling this continued progression. half pipe 1420 hear we come.

I don't know what kind of crack you smoke, or maybe you haven't seen a snowboard movie in the last 2 years, but snowboarders are DEFINATELY not out of tricks. You say everything's been done and there's no more progression? Go watch an isenseven movie. or put in Picture This. Snowboarders are doing crazy shit you wouldn't even dream of.

Snowboarding ain't done progressing/growing by a long fricking way, it is just that we skiers are catching up a hell of a lot quicker than we ever have before, our sport is being pushed in so many directions at the same time.

There's no need to bag on snowboarders, or state that you wish freeskiing would stay 'core'. Pricks like that just wanna be able to shout about how good they are, when in fact they blow, but noone sees them do it...

I wanna see fucking progression in this sport, i want more of my bros to get in to it, so i got more people to share my experiences with.

snowboarding is great now because the 'progression' has split it into two segments, xgames/sponsored-by-mountain-dew/olympics guys (who in skiing could be comparable to Dumont and sammy and Jon), and the other kids who don't compete really and fucking film for video parts and dick around. which is great. the Stepchild movie this year, and Thanks Brain are both really good examples of the later.

i want to see skiing do this. because when you look at the park, there are a couple kids trying some new creative stuff, sliding around and having fun, and a WHOLE majority of them sitting on the inrun of a jump, turning up their music and stressing about landing their switch double cork 14 octo to truckdriver to extra stupid double grab. this might just be enhanced cause i live at whistler so people are more..not serious but whatever about it. but ya hear?

I mostly agree, but I have to disagree to some extent about the lack of people doing something "different." We have companies like 9thward and surface that are pushing stuff in their own direction. Line hasn't sponsored "competition" skiers in a long time, and they sponsor a lot of ams doing something different, like Garret Russell for example. In the park last year, I saw people who purposefully never spin over 5, and i saw kids doing smooth switch 10's all over the place. I think we have more variety than you implied.

Snowboarding is NOT done growing. Not even close, besides, style is always evolving, each rider's style and the sport as a whole. Snowboarding movies like Picture This are light years ahead of skiing films. So damn dope. Snowboarding urban riding has gone off the last 2-3 yrs and they have barely scratched the surface there.

Skiing is growing and evolving at a fast rate, and why wouldn't you want it to? It's cool to see the sport start to branch out into different styles of riding. The more it grows, the more $$$ gets pumped into the sport, the faster it will progress, and more riders will be able to make a living while expressing themselves in new ways on two planks.

As long as people are snowboarding (or skiing or whatever) there will be new tricks to master. But honestly, I think why snowboarding has started growing at a comparatively slower rate than skiing the last couple years is because there are a lot of 40 year old snowboard gapers, and there aren't a ton of 40 year old gapers rocking AR5s or PEs.

Snowboarding is still growing, look up the brand, Dinosaurs Will Die, and they are the sickest team out there, their vids are always about them dicking around with their boards, doing some crazy stuff without a sick park, they just make all their own shit by themselves, so they are proof that snowboarding is heading into their non comp riders era, kind of like surfing with guys like Rastovich, Ozzy Wright, Cheyne Magnussen, Darryl Flea virostko, and Jamie O, and Dane Reynolds(before this season)

snowboarding isn't close to being done growing, especially in the area of urban features.  and only a few skiers are even beginning to touch the level that snowboarding hasa been for years in that area - will wesson, lj strenio, ahmet dadali, and (maybe most of all) frank raymond.

everyone thought skiing rails would progress 4 years ago and still do, but nothings happen. just the same tricks as before with bigger spins, people are too hung up on what looks impressive as opposed to whats actually hard (which never looks as hard as it is).

and yeah, you couldnt be any more wrong original poster, but i like your positive outlook with regards to skiing

I disagree.  I think that snowboarders follow "the industry" just as much as skiiers do.  The only difference is that the snowboarding industry is huge compared to the ski industry.  There are so many different snowboarding companies out there that represent every single facet of snowboarding culture. On the other hand, in skiing we have very few companies that deviate from the norm- the gangster wannabe park rat.  That doesn't mean that we have no variety in skiing.  Just look at the athletes.  Seth Morrison is very different from tanner hall, yet they ski for the same company and ski together.  And there are plenty of guys taht take after seth and aren't rocking the gangster style.  And I'm not saying that the lack of a lot of variety is such a bad thing at this point because if we are going to make a lot of progression we need to progress forward before we progress outward. I guess to sum up how I feel about this I would say that the variety in snowboarding only comes from variety in the industry.  Skiing will experience that variety, but it will take a while for our industry to expand to being comparable to snowboarding, and until then, we aren't going to have as much variety in skiing.

Actually many things have been evolving and getting better rail wise. Presses have becames more complex, with 270's on, and i've even seen them with pretzels. Pretzels are pretty normal now, they are pretty hard to do. Taps have started to come around, a couple skiers have started pushing that. Its not just the same old spinning a bunch of switch ups, or spinning an 810 on like you seem to be under the impression of.

i think freeskiing is beginning to become more recognized. but wenever i watch a snowboarding trailer and a skiing trailer. i actually enjoy watching the snowboarding trailer better because their stuff seems more creative than skiing

Check out absinthe films POP, 3 years old and T Rice throws a double cork over it. Snowboarding is far from done progressing (watch OPTIMISTIC) we'll be trying to catch up for a couple seasons to come, at least in some parts of the sport.

i would much rather skiing in the eyes of the non-skiers the same way they look at it now, which is not as cool as we know it is.  i like how skiing is "small",  but not really, if that makes sense.  if everyone was into skiing and eeverybody skiied then it would probably be not as much fun at all

i definately am going to have to disagree that snowboarding isnt progressing
so many more sicker things are being thrown down.  The past three years alone snowboarders came up with the double cork, then took it to a double cork 10 then to 12 tried it in pipe backcountry and park and now i think DB can pull a Double cork 14. thats just one example
so snowboarding is progressing and it will each year.
same with skiing.  the only thing skiing has is i believe with skiing you can get more combinations of grabs then boarders.

you would be surprised.  It is literally learning everything over again.  It goes a bit faster as far as the learning but it is very uncomfortable for a while.

I think skiing switch is hard too though.

same, i dont want it to become like snowboarding( or skateboarding) when it just becomes some stupid image that they have on little kids t.v. shows and have on wal-mart shirts that say 1080 or 720 backflip. i would like free skiing to get a little more props, because when most people hear you ski they imediatley think on alpine racers in skin tight suits. I know lots will disagree with me but i dont care.

as for snowboarding its definetly not done growing but its moving at a wwwaaayyy slower rate than skiing, i actually kind of find it hard to keep up with all the new shit the pros are throwing down, one day some pro makes a new trick thats super hot, the next day everyone is doing it. Thats whats really pushing the sport right now. Also you never know maybe with some new binding technology for snowboards we will be seeing some ssx style tricks in the future( same with skiing)

I may be wrong here but snowboard sales have definatly leveled off.  Of course they had too because it went from nothing to a major winter activity.  But the curve has definatly flattened out while free skiing is just beginning its curve.  I dotn think it will ever be as big as snowboarding but we are on our way up while snopwboarders are cruising on the flat

think about it, all snowboards look the same unless you compare race boards. twin tips vs flat tails is a pretty significant difference.

ok you're right, you don't see as many 40 year olds riding twins but tell me this, how many of these 40 year old "gaper" snowboarders do you see rocking a board comparable to something like a Burton Dominant that was built strictly for park riding?

Snowboarders are still progressing, but every snowboarder it seems is like every snowboarder, except for a coiple of the realy good kids. For skiers, each one does stuff differently and adds to the sport in their own way

I think that skiing and snowboarding are progressing at the same rate as far as tricks go, but I don't find out what the latest tricks are and stuff, and don't see them being thrown on the hill.  But I would definitely say that as a whole, freeskiing is definitely progressing faster than snowboarding.  Like, I see about the same amount of skiers and snowboarders in the park, while a few years ago i rarely saw twin tip skis. Also, you can find "cool" ski gear pretty much everywhere now, because its getting as widespread as snowboarding.  That's what I'm really pumped about, is letting people know what we're doing.  And it makes buying shit a lot easier.
