Seriously, shut the fuck up about how much skiing costs. You're all lucky as hell to be a part of the very small minority of people who can do something as unproductive and awesome as sliding down a snowy hill all day without worrying where your next meal is coming from, where you're going to sleep that night, or how much longer you have until you lose a limb to the machinery that feeds our gross consumerism.
If you give a shit, do what you can to change it. If not, shut up, try working a little, and stop bitching about the cost of skiing.

Good call.....I have done a couple med trips overseas and its absolutely crazy to see the comparison of how we live compared to those of others born into far less opportunistic situations. In our society of materialistic possessions, its easy to lose sight of how well off we are....

Theres nothing you can do to change it. Thats the way it is. It's been like that forever. Theres been attempts (communism and socialism) to make everyone equal but it doesn't work. So far the best system is a democracy and its not so bad. But yea you right, we're lucky to be skiing. But people like me, even though I'm not dirt poor in a factory. I still work hard to get good grades in school, stay educated of political issues, help my parents, and be a good person. In my situation I realize I'm lucky and do the best I can. So don't try to make me feel guilty.

Everything, it just depends how serious about making a difference you really are. There are a million approaches. Devote your life to humanitarian causes, whether it's providing aid in africa or anything else. Eschew the consumptive ways of modern society, give up your car, tv and computer, live in a haybail house and follow a vegan diet etc. If you're really smart maybe you can devote your life to drastically changing the whole system that we live in rather than just your role in it. I'm not saying you're necessarily obligated to do any of these things, god knows I don't do nearly enough, but don't deny that you play a role in how the whole thing plays out.
Everyone can make a difference. Most people just don't want to enough.

Those are all great ideas on a personal level. But you me and almost everyone else is not going to do that so things will stay the way they are. I don't feel guilty about it. I won the lottery and get to live a good life. But that doesn't mean I should give up my lottery winnings cause its not fair.

I'm not as radically on the same page as Twintips as far as living in a haybale house, vegan diet(love eating animals :], etc....but I do feel that there are things we can all do to better the life of someone in a less fortunate situation as ourselves. You talk like things will never change, so why even try....with that mindset, nothing ever will. The little things like donating clothes, food , etc...you never know how much someone appreciates that kind of stuff until you are in that position. Spend a day in the life of someone who just happened to be born to a different set of parents in those kind of circumstances, and then tell me it doesnt matter

that's like saying you shouldn't vote because your vote is meaningless because you are only one in a couple hundred million. The way you live your life does count. Obviously your actions are unlikely to change the entire face of the earth, but isn't it enough if it makes a difference to just a couple people?
