What is the current state of the American media?

Im pretty sure PBS is one of the few privately payed stations, every other one receives governemnt subsidies and as a result, whats aired is too foten governement regulated.

the mainstream media has become the republicans' bitches, telling us exactly what they want us to hear. they are paid by advertisers of the same companies that paid to get the government elected. so basically media is the voice of the rich and the corporations

Secondary media sources. Counterpunch and Democracy Now! are good examples. Its news, but without a lot of the 'unpleasant' details spared. As in its 100% unbiased and it presents both sides of the issuee regarding American and more indepth: its foriegn policy.

Thats what I was worried about. Some of it just seems like government propaganda. They really need to privatize the whole media and seperate it from the government. They should pretty much treat frequencies like private land or any other kind of private property.

I really don't think that the media is the republican's bitch.  It depends a lot on what station you watch.  You could ask yourself why, if the media is owned by the government, there is such a low approval rating for Bush, or why there is such little support for the war in Iraq.

American media is controlled by 5-6 or people, all privately owned.  There is no "investigative reporting" in the news anymore...one term that is often used to describe the american media today is "indexing."  Indexing is a term that is used to describe the media's regurgitation of daily happenings and events in Washington...instead of analysing and investigating what the government does, the media would rather just tell us what happened, straight from the politicians themselves.

The media is completely under wraps, subdued by the current administration.  President Bush refuses to answer journalists questions that have not been pre screened ahead of time, all questions must be submitted to him before a press conference.

American media is geared towards making money, otherwise known as sensational news, targeting a crowd more interested in custody of Britney's children than with what the government is doing with our money.

Democracy now is on every Sunday when I am at work on the University station.  Good program, makes you think.  I was listening an interview with an author who wrote a book on the rise of Facists in the Religious right in the states and the power they are starting to wield.  How they integrate themselves with local police and military but not the community etc etc and the influence they have, calling for the destruction of Iran etc as gods will. 

The guardian has its own bias though, it is a strong socialist leaning paper.  I tend to agree with it but don't say it is an unbiased source.
