Skiing would be more fun if it wasn't so expensive

I hate how the wonderful love of skiing that i have has been slightly tarnished due to the fact that it costs an arm and a leg just to continue riding every season.  I am starting to feel that the product industry is coming closer to a point where progression can not only take place in design and performance, but also in production, distribution, and overall cost to the consumers.  I think that a time is coming where companies need to start focusing on maintaining quality while lowering cost, and if this were possible it could help to progress the sport at an even higher rate.  Anyone agree/disagree?

on the other sports, i used to play club soccer, and it was a good 1500 bucks to play a season, then u by ur cleats balls, gas gettign to games, traveling to tournaments, hotel fees.

surfing is pretty expensive too but u can make surfing equip last.
surfboard new 300-2000+ dollars, depending on the board of course.
good wet suit 400+ dollars
but ur stuff usually lasts a while if u take care of it. and often times u can find really good deals, and when u surf, sometimes someone will be selling a board, and u just buy it because u think its a cool board even though u have another 4 in ur garage

umm I dont know about that. except hockey. but honestly how do you spend money on baseball? yea you can drop a few hundo on a nice mitt and the same for a bat... but then you're set. either way so what if skiing is expensive that's kinda the way things are so just get a job.

it is exspensive and thats y newschoolers is here to help with the cost of used gear. ski swaps are awsome brand new skis for like 200 thats crazy. and it feels so good when you buy all your stuff by yourself as someone said up there farther. its good how it is and if you dont like the price just buy all used stuff

I dont think this thread is true at all. Yes, skiing is expensive, but regardless of the cost, I am still going to have just as much fun out on the hill. Im not having less fun because my setup was expensive or inexpensive. Yes its expensive and yes it sucks sometimes passing out cash for new sticks, but in the end, its going to be the same amount of fun as if someone were to give you some used skis. Atleast thats the way I look at it. Its like golf not being fun because its expensive. Its still a ton of fun, regarldess of cost.

what you do is buy your sticks or other stuff, then complain that ther's a defect, like delaminating and you get your money back at full retail i did that with my line invaders two seasons ago then i got K2 Fugatives last season for free, and by now i have enough cash to buy new sticks at the end of the season when they go on sale... also if your good enough to get a regional sponsorship, they hook you up, or get a job on the mountain, like park crew or lessons, it only takes half the ski day, i'm working at Gringo Harry's (mexican resturant) this winter at Sunday River, and it's giving me enough cash to buy new gear next year, also instead of being a lazy fuck, work in the summer, catering companies pay good, or roast beeferies etc. don't work at shaw's they pay shit for the work you put in.

hockeys mad expensive.  i was a goalie and had like $3000 + worth of equipment plus $2000 for ice time and $1000 for camp.  so like $6000 as opposed to the probable $1000 i will spend on skiing.

this year i've spent over 600 dollars just for boots and pants.....

but i love them both, sooo comfy and will last for a few seasons to come.

My contribution to this thread is work at a ski shop, coupla days ago i bought a jacket with a marked price of $278.90, got it for $90.

It was a quicksilver 06/07 jacket with 8000mm/8000mm

its not too bad. It cost $300 for a pass and then I can go from October to June.  The extra, new stuff cost more but if you sell your old stuff to replace it, you save a lot of money.

Lets actually break down the cost of skiing.

Seasons pass - $300 (you can find less expensive areas to ski at than mega glitzy resorts if you want to ski)

Used skis - $200 (these can last more than one season. my last pair of skis lasted me 3 full seasons)

Boots- $100 (used at a ski swap)

Goggles - $15 at the ski swap

Poles - $5

I'm not even bothering with outerwear because almost everyone who lives in a cold climate has clothes that will work for skiing already.

Total cost ~$620. Say you go skiing 40 times a season, that comes out to be $15 per day of skiing, or $1.87 per hour.

Going to the movies costs $6.33 per hour.

I love 4frnts 35% college discount, but  other than that you can get last years or previous years setups cheap as long as you know where to look, as for getting passes ya just gotta bite the bullet, its worth it

Word to DH being expensive! when i was real into it, i was droppin MINIMUM of 500 bucks a season just on parts. blowing shocks, tires, derailleurs, chains, etc etc. thats not including stuff like protective gear, shorts/jerseys, goggles, gloves, lubricants/tools, car racks, gas to the trails/shuttles, etc. its a wicked expensive sport.


as for skiing, it can be done for next to nothing. skis, you can either go used, for literally next to nothing, or buy a ski like an 06 silencer for 100-150, z12 for like 100, decent last years boot like a dalbello Aero or Salomon preforma boot. that right there is around 350-400 bucks, FOR ALL YOUR gear, brand new. outerwear can be had for 200.

you can easily get a quality, new setup for way under a grand. if you buy slightly used stuff, you can get gear for under 500. season passes are anywhere from 200-600 bucks. 1000 bucks for all your cost is pretty damn cheap compared to many sports.

Soccer is by far the cheapest mainstream sport. All you need is a ball. Why do you think its the most popular sport in the world? Cause everybody can play it.

And skiing is nothing next to sports like DH mountain biking, Hockey, Golf, anything involving horses, and motor racing. I complain about the price of a seasons pass at Whistler, but I really shouldn't as its peanuts compared to what I pay for my golf club membership.

If you were really committed to skiing, you could do it very cheaply. Buy a used set of touring gear/boots and used outerwear and you could ski free after that for years. If you were just into the skiing itself, that is.
