Flat Landings, why?

Ya, so I was just wondering, why are skiers so in love with hucking cliffs to flat landings. Like how in hell hard is it to pick out a cliff with a half decent steep landing. Like what's with Jamie Pierre, has this guy ever launched a cliff without a flat ass landing. Seems like skiers just like hucking off cliffs and landing on their backs in huge fucking bomb holes.

I think it's cool that we've got, in the same thread, 1 guy from Ontario and 1 guy from Michigan are willing to coach the pros on how to land big cliff drops into deep pow...

Furthermore, I agree with you guys: Nobody should drop a cliff (especially if they are going to throw a rodeo 7 off it) if the landing is not ideal. If the landing is less than perfect, they should puss out and not do it.

haha i love when newschool skiers that know nothing about cliffs and lines critisiz hip checks, but anyways its just cuz alot of cliffs have flat landings its just the way it is i dunno why.

I'm with mike, ass check flat landings are GA. It doesn't make a better 'SKIER' if you fall off a higher cliff than someone else. It takes ZERO tallent. Go ahead and argue against my point, I dare you.

NO TALLENT NECESSARY TO JUMP OFF AN 80 FOOT CLIFF AND ASS CHECK.

not that i've jumped off an 80 foot cliff or anything but i imagine its pretty hard to land on your feet and keep skiing after falling that far. at least they have the balls to do it.

everybody shut the fuck up if somebody likes to hip check a cliff then why do you care. because it looks bad in your eyes? who really gives a shit why do you people care so much about the way other people ski. so somebody lands on their back off a cliff and it means they have no talent, ohh fucking well quit crying about it and go ski until you can drop an 80 footer and land on your feet cleanly.

Yes it is a talent endeavor. To rotate that slowly, and land perfectly on your back is a talent. and do you know why they do it? no, half of you are retards who think it looks stupid. It's so they can get the greatest amount of surfact area on the snow, cause jumping off an 80 footer hurts if you land just on your skis on a flat. There's not enough surfact area, so you make do by landing on your back, which is larger than the sums of your skis. It's the only SAFE way to jump off cliffs with flat landings and be almost sure you won't seriously hurt yourself

He's right about it being safer. But if you look at a lot of the movies guys are throwing down and not touching down on their backs at all. Gaffney (Robb) in Immersion sticks a 50 footer straight onto his skis somewhere around the Palisades, and Shane does the same on one nearly as big. But anytime you can ski away without stopping I think you've stuck it.
And most of those landings are steeper than they look.

Thank you Levin, atleast we have so agreement here. Most of the people on here cant look forward. Ya, it may be sick to huck some big ass cliff to your back in your opinion. But it is ugly ass, takes no talent, and makes skiing look queer. Look at progressing shit, landing on you back doesn't progress shit, it just makes you look half ass.

Hey, read this and see what PY Leblanc says about filming crashes and butt-checks.

Butt-checks make skiing look worse. I mean really dirty landings, like when one overrotates his ugly backflip from some cliff and lands on his back. Or just straight-airing, flaling his arms, and landing on his ass. It's not about safety - it's about lack of technique.

What kind of fucking safety do you mean? To fall right after your landing, when you bombed the slope with your ass, stressed it (i mean slope) and increased the avalanche danger? The rule is simple: you land and get the fuck out of cliff foot, cause you can crack the slope under your feet and also you can bring down the cornice you've just hit.

Ive hit a few small cliffs (10-20 ft) poaching in whistler.. I find its better to land in the backseat in powder rather then to land on the balls of your feet. as someone already mentioned in this thread, it gives you more surface area to absorb the impact.
Cliff jumping really isnt meant to be a skillful endevour anyways, unless your doing tricks of the cliff. Its mostly about being able to pick a safe area to land and jump, and having the balls to do it.

So you are telling me you'd rather see some one flail off a cliff, dead stop canonball on the landing, rather than see someone hit a huge stepdown at 50mph, do a 150 foot cork 7, stomp the fuck out of it on two feet going faster than when they left the jump? You better not buy sesion 1242 then.

Personally, I try to keep my back from hitting the ground as much as I can - tha whole spine thing and all...but there may be something to the whole surface area thing.

More importantly though (IMHO) there is a huge difference between landing on a tranny in the park and landing from a cliff jump, because you are landing in (you hope) deep, soft snow. Of ~course~ you want to have your weight back a bit (just a bit) so that you can avoid going over the handle bars. It keeps you from biting your knee caps too. Its not that the landings are -flat- its that they have deep loose snow on them. If you want to ride out from your drop, there is a way better chance of doing it if you land ass first instead of face first.

And anyone who says there is neither skill nor talent in dropping an 80 or even a 40 - should go and ask someone who does it what he thinks of that.

just on a side note yes i understand that style is important but only to those who depend on having it to keep there sponsers and keep making money so they can support themselves and their loved ones. unless you have a family to feed as per skiing then go have fun and do w/e the fuck you want and stop criticising others.
