Replying to Across the Universe
I have no idea if there was already a thread about this, searchbar showed no results, so heres my mini rant:
So, I was expecting Across the Universe to be fucking amazing, just as several other million people. What could be better than a trippy ass movie with beatles songs. I probably watched the trailer a good 20 times before seeing the movie. I get a couple of my friends to see it, amped as shit, and it was pretty awful. The beginning was horrible, and for anyone who actually saw the movie, the scene with "I want to hold your hand" made me laugh uncontrollably for a good 10 minutes, as well as the rest of the theater. The plot line was so predictable it ruined the movie. Boy loves girl, goes away, girl finds other boy, they fall in love, END. No climax, no resolution, just crap. Although, the actors were decent at both acting and singing, the combination of both was horrendous. It seemed as if the writer tried to cram as many Beatles songs into a movie as possible, disregarding the fact that it would not make any sense at all. And the ones they put in werent even that good. The Beatles puns (such as Max's "Silver Hammer" banging on the fan) were funny, but got old quickly. Honestly, the movie would have been 100X better if they kept the original songs the beatles did, because no matter how hard someone tries alame musical interpretation will always be terrible. No one is better than the Beatles, end of story. Theres no need to go ahead and ruin some of the best songs even written, and then add bad acting and awkward moemtns into the mix. The whole Janis Joplin and Jimi hendrix duo was totally unnecessary to the storyline, and only made the movie run on longer than it should have.
BUT there were some positives to the movie that i have to address, Even though Bono is indeed the spawn of the devil, the "I am the Walrus" scene was downright insane. I felt as if i was on an acid trip the entire time. The "Benefit of Mr. Kite" and "Strawberry Fields" were also very well written and were probably the only interesting parts of the movie. If only the director took a step back and realized the whole movie should be like that. AND IT WAS PG-13!!!! How in the hell was that possible, with so many tits. I wish movies were like that when i was 13 goddamn. Overall, it was just about as good as paying 7$ to go see a high school play, not a movie. If you're looking for a good laugh and some weird 60's trippy shit, go see it.
For those who have seen it, Discuss.
