6cyl or 4cyl tacoma?

im buying a tacoma soon, 4wd obviously. should i go for a 6 or 4 cylinder? im thinking 6.
i may get an sr5, sooo dope.

If you're willing to pay for the extra gas, then get a 6cyl for sure.  a four cylinder truck is like a sedan with a bed

I'm not totally sure what I get in my 6 cylinder 5sp Tacoma, but it's mid 20's on the highway, and that's acceptable enough

I'd need to know the year you are looking for and I can tell you how big the tank is

in regards to the power question, with AWD and 4WD cars, there is a greater loss of power through the drive train resulting in far less WHP compared to HP(what the dealers tell you). I don't know how much you are into cars so I won't get to complicated but basically my 174hp V6 AWD probably puts down about 140something to the wheels.  You can figure anywhere from a 20-35% power loss from the factory claimed HP numbers with an AWD or 4WD car.

the tank is 18.5 gallons

And driving a V6 with 190hp and 220 ft lbs of torque as opposed to a 4 banger 150 hp and 177 ft lbs of torque will be noticeable in my mind.  I have driven an older Toyota pickup with a 4 cylinder and it felt like a go kart with 4wd.  Go with the V6, it might come in handy some day, pulling a trailer or getting you out some of shit.

yea in a mid size pickup its ok to get a v6 but on a truck v8 is the best.  if you are worried about gas mileage then get a honda

a 4wd sr5 with 114K on it is like 8 grand.

I new a guy that had a 4cyl tacoma, and then he got a newer tacoma cause he like the trunk, his new one was a 6cyl.  He says he likes his new one a ton more than the 4cyl one, and will never get a weak 4cyl again

i have a 4cyl toyota tercel...gas is sooo cheap for it its awesome. when i drove about 20 kilometers a day in the summer i only spent about $20 every week and a half on gas. as much as my toyota shitcel sucks, i love it

That right there is a 1998 ext cab v6 sr5, I picked it up two years ago for about 9900. I have driven an older 4 and 6 cyl and would definately advise the 6. Even if your not towing anything it is good if you drive fast, on ski trips on the highway I can accelerate up hill fully loaded and I love it.

Tiny yes worthless no. My friend regularly hauls over a quarter ton with his 85 four cyl. and we dug that out of a field in maine last winter. He's been using it all this year and just had to replace the original clutch, plus the thing has enough miles to go to the moon and back.

there really shouldn't be any trouble deciding which one to get. think of the physics, bro. a honda civic has 4 cylinders so how could a good truck have 4? it would be like buying a dae-frickin-woo for racing. just thinking of how useless they are makes me laugh. man up and get a fucking 6 cyl. 6 will def get the job done. an 8 is just a pain in the ass. i have an 8 cyl sierra and she eats gas like there is no tomorrow. sorry for the long ramble.

That makes sense except civics 4 cyl engine is 1.7 liters and yota fours are 2.7 so almost twice as big four cylinder. good try though.

personally if your not gonna haul or you don't drive fast I'd get the 4, but I load the truck with all sorts of goodies and drive about 80 on the highways so i went with the six.

Dont get a 4. 4 cylinders are for small and mid size FWD cars, not trucks. 6 is good, because it won't use up too much gas.

i had a 1985 toyota 4x4 4-banger. Even with a new engine it was underpowered uphills, especially heading up to the mountain.

now i have an 89 4runner v6...don't have any power issues, in fact she stays at 70mph, uphill in 5th!

paskiing, i know that a toyota 4 cyl is twice the size of a civics 4 cyl, but seriously...a truck with 4 cyl is useless unless you're driving to the beach and back. mind as well get a civic.

I have the 22re in my 1989 4x4 pickup and I have to say that it is the slowest truck i have ever owned or driven although it is semi torquey. I want to do a SAS to it but i think im gonna swap in the 3.0 first

im saying its got NO TORQUE, NO HP, NO TOP END, NO TOWING CAPABILITY......its just an oversized ranger.....and even those have more power. Sorry man, but even toyota buffs swap out the stock parks for chevy 305 v8s.

You are correct sir, yotas are not huge nasty trucks. That is why guys that like big nasty trucks for extreme stuff swap v8s into yotas. This thread starter doesn't seem like a big truck guy, that's the only reason I keep suggesting the four cylinder. If you just want to safely get to the mountain and back in the snow with good 4x4 and clearance either one is good.

Don't even compare a tacoma to a ranger, and everything I've seen as far as power, shows the new yota 4's at 150 hp and ford's 4 cyl at 135 but rangers are small and quick. Yotas are heavy because they're made of quality products and parts which is why they are tanks.

We also have yet to hear from anyone in this thread with a newer 4 cyl yota about their power, personally I'm kinda interested myself cause I almost bought one.
