Rusted rails make me sad.

My hill keeps all the rails and boxes out in the elements all year long. I walked around my hill last weekend and looked at the poor boxes and rails and they were all rusted. My hill is supposed to add a rope tow to the park this year so do you think they will sand them down or something before the season starts? And if they dont is rust really mean to your skis?

im sure they do cuz all mountains leave them outside and they are never overtly rusty

they will get overly rusty if they aren't being used and sitting in the sun and then rain and back and fourth.

Also some of the better resorts oil their shit. A coat of wd40 every now and then will keep a rail/box sliding smooth

yeah man, last year, second ski day of the year at cataloochee in nc, they brought out their mailbox and it had been outside since the previous ski season.  Everything was rusted over and it was slow as hell.  People took snow and rubbed it on the rail, and it took some rust off cause the snow was dark brown, but someone found a file for edges and started grinding the mailbox down a little.  Eventually it was rideable again and it took around 1/2 a day for it to get fast again. 

but it doesn't make sense for a mountain to spend hundreds of dollars on rails just to let them sit out over the summer and rust.  But then again, my mountain spends hundreds of dollars on 8 ft flat rails, flat down flat rails with 20 degree kinks that are way too steep.

Wd40 isnt great for bases but you wouldnt lube up a rail with it.  If you spray it at the endo of the season and periodically it will save it from rust.  wd40 is a water displacer and not a lubricant, hence the wd

Paint is the key. WD 40 sucks, just get out the black spray paint every now and again and give it a thick coat at the end and you will be sliding smooth.

my hill has a total of 1 rail and 1 box that arent broken. we have one rail that used to be a battle ship that we still use as a double kink.. The rest are eitehr mangled from groomers or teh legs fell off. rust doesn't seem to have much adverse on skis, by the way.

most places repaint thier rails almost every year.  but rust really isnt that big of a deal

If they don't do anything, you can just rub some skate wax on that shit and it will be fine.

Most of the time it will be surface rust and that can be ground off no problem.  They just need to paint them in the spring to seal it from the elements.

I ski at app in NC and they have like a building they keep theres in they start in August fixing them up and building new ones. They are extremely dedicated to there skiers there rails are perfect and they get more each season. They are never rusty or crappy plus they never let them get in bad condition

at the beginning of the year, let some some people go before you on rusted rails cuz you the color of your jacket may change. That's what happen to me.

my mountain hides them in the wooods haha. but they had a jam like two weekends agp and the dfd they had out seemed in pretty good shape, except for how mellow it was. but i think wawa tunes up thier rails before they put them out. if not rub some snow and just keep hittin it
