Rap is more mainstream, most of MTVs 'Hip Hop' isnt. Rap generally has less of an emphasis on crazy lyrics and more on heavy bass beats. The raps are more towards how their livin, ie. cars, money, drugs, hos. Hip-hop has more soul in it. The beats are generally more intracite. The lyrics are like said above, storytale style. Listen to some Heiroglyphics and some Lil Jon and you'll easily be able to hear the difference. But just like big mtn riding and park riding have similarities, rap and hip-hop have their share.

normally i shy away from this question because i'm sick of answering it but.....i was surprisingly impressed by the answer you just gave. A couple things to add are...hip-hop is more a lifestyle than anything, whether its the music, graf, djing or breakdancing. Its not some bitch with 7 bulletholes in his ass raping about a magic stick

Hip hop is a culture. Rap is a way of singing. HUGE difference. Rap is often influenced by the hip hop culture, but not always. For example, Cypress Hill is not hip hop, and whether you'd like to believe it or not, Nelly is both rap and hip hop.

differences:
hip hop consists of rap, R&B, etc.
hip-hop is a larger genre, like electronic ( which contains techno, trance, jungle, triphop, etc)

I'm thinking it makes sense.
Hip hop is broader genre of music, consisting of smaller genres of music, like rap.
Rebel was also right on his point of the lifestyle, but I don't think that answers the question about the music type.
i think rap vs. hip hop vs. music
is the same as (in the same order)
program files vs. C drive vs. whole hard drive

'rap' is one word 'hip hop' is 2 words 'rap' consist of the letters R, A, and P.. 'hip Hop' only shares the letter P, witch it has 2ce in its name there for canceling out the similarity

doood techo and hip hop are tooootally different! you cant even put them in the same class. And i hate to disagree with ya rebel but Nelly is not hip hop, he needs his own genre maybe like hip-pop. Krs tried to ban his record saying it wasnt hip hop...that says alot right there. Nobody is ever going to win this argument because it really doesnt matter, you can try and put labels on music and culture all you want but there will always be exceptions and people who disagree. Rap and hip hop dont really have a set in stone defintion its up to the listener to decide i guess. Thats about the best i can put it.

yeah brody i read your post wrong. i thought you were comparing hip hop to hip hop. i was like.....no whats wrong with you. but you were just reinforcing your first statement. and hip hop to me is music that isnt driven by money, but more by love of the genre of music and the lifestyle it represents.

Co-Flow, I'm pretty stubborn about my views on this which is why I must agree with you to disagree. I will say this though: In all the hip hop clubs I've been to (most in Ottawa mind you, and 1 or 2 in TO), the songs that most often send the club into a frenzy are by Nelly or Ludachris or some other super mainstream artist. What defines hip hop music is 1) the beats to dance to and 2) the core of the hip hop culture - fantacy.
A little off topic here, but I think you have to spend a night in a club 95% full of black people to truely appreciate some of these mainstream artists.

i see it, rap=DMX, hip hop=J5
hip hop is more beat and a good message. rap is more of a gangsta style, where proclaiming your bling bling is key

Just because it says 'Hip-Hop' Club, doesn't mean its truely hip-hop. There's no way Ludacris is hip-hop, he's just not. You never really see Rap clubs. Thats because a Hip-Hop club sounds better and has a potential to attract more people than a straight Rap Club.

They aren't actually called hip hop clubs, we call them that because it sounds better than a black club or a n**** club, and because it describes culture in the club, not specifically the music.
