i think you are going to need to purchase a USSA and a FIS card inorder to participate in the event

Call Konrad at Mainstream Marketing or the USSA office in Park City and they should be able to get you headed in the right direction. I'm pretty sure that is the US Team Selections mogul event and the first NorAm of the year, so whatever you need to be able to compete in NorAm halfpipes is what you will need for that event.

Okay is there enough time for someone without USSA/CFSA/FIS credentials to realistically get into that event?
What about those who aspire to compete in a future Olympic 1/2 pipe venue - what credientials will they need? What events will they need to attend?

yea it doesnt take that long to get a USSA or a FIS card so you should beable to get it but you might want to see if they cut off registration at a certain point or if it is open to any number of competitors

Doesn't USSA mean that you have to also join a ski team?

no, you need a ussa lisence. you need this to compete in alll ussa/fis events. every event you enter is worth point. if you get good results, the points accumulate (or they get subtracted, depending on freestyle or racing..). once you have enough points to make the cut off, you are quailified to compete in the nor-am halfpipe, like the once in PC

Freestyle 1/2 pipe is a little different then USSA racing or moguls which both have very disciplined and structured qualifing procedures. Speaking from my Canadian experience the numbers of athletes that want to enter these events is so small that there is essentially not qualifiying procedure. That in conjunction with the fact the there are few if any qaulifing events for Nor Am 1/2 pipe.
I have found that if you want to compete and talk to the event organizer they will likely allow you to compete.
Come on guys, show your support of 1/2 pie by getting out there and competing. When the Nor am events get to the point where too many athletes are starting to compete they will have to establish qualifing events to create a selection criteria. More participants = more events = more fun. 1/2 pipe has to move beyond the big time limited entry pro events and this is the way we can do it. Attend the events you can qualify for. GO FOR IT.

As mentioned by others you are going to need to buy all the FIS liccenses and insurance plus pay enter fees. That is one of the big problems is that it is quite expense to attend one event.
As for papa, again because of the limited attendance you will not likely need to belong to a ski team. I am sure the rules will get a little more established as the numers grow, but for now it is pretty easy compared to the other events.

IT probably is a noram but no their still open competition as long as you get the FIS membership and what not. Kind of pathetic that the North American Championships is so poorly unatended that it's an open competition. I can almost understand why FIS doesn't want halfpipe in the olympics.

Thank you for the info!! Do you think they will offer a volume discount for a group of Newschoolers? Doesn't hurt to ask does it? I mean if there attendance is hurting and they were approached by all those PC kids who throw down, why would they turn them away? Are they really that stringent?

So, if given a choice, should pro skiers choose this event to go to show thier support or should they go to another Pipe event at the same time that has a cash purse?

well if its a matter of SHOULD, they should go to the event showing their support, regardless of a cash purse or not. but its a matter of WOULD. what would they do? they would probably go to the event with the cash purse.

guys, FIS pipe events are nothing new. they've been going on for years and unfortunately the only real support from the top dogs they get from the top dogs is during the world championships.
the top guys will for sure take the cash purse because these comps with big money are their lifeline. the bigger the cash purse = the more media attention the event receives = more photographers = more possibility of photos in mags = more money from photo incentives.

well put yourself in the spot of a professional skiier.
you became that because you wanted to make a living out of doing what you love to do most
and even if you care about that sport more than anything
you are still trying to make a living out of it.
so no matter how much you support freeskiing, you still have to make money

I know that the USSA and FIS are different things, but do most comps take your USSA card even if it is FIS? or do you need both..?

Allrighty, here is what's going on.
The pipe event isn't moving from park city, it is just on hold until a future date in the short future, and I wasn't given a specific date, just short future. So most likely before mid January.
Moguls were moved to colorado.
Sorry for the delay on getting back to this, it's been a busy few weeks.

The halfpipe is almost done. Keyword almost. got the first cut in with the zaugg and the ram that keeps the tension on the left track of the cat decided not to work anymore. To boot, it's been warm this week so trying to blow snow to build pick n shovel isn't going so hot. Aiming for early next week for pick and the pipe. And papa, not a different comp. the fis moguls were moved to colorado but the pipe is staying in park city. the date has been pushed back but not decided on yet.
All times are Eastern (-5)
