Unless you provide links to a thread which answers the same goddamn question, don't post this response. It adds absolutely nothing to the thread and most of the time, it is hard to find older threads on the subject or the responses are outdated.

STARTING SOON, I WILL BE ISSUING TEMP BANS FOR PEOPLE POSTING GENERIC SEARCH BAR RESPONSES.

no, that's not bad...  that is the helpful way to do it -   "hey, check out this link out for the answer to your question.  I found it by typing ---------  into the search bar above.

Honestly, who cares? I mean so what if it doesn't add to the thread constructively? Neither does like 1/3 of every post anyways. But if it's just "Searchbar noob" then it doesn't really take much time out of your day. You are right that people should be helpful but I don't think it's fair to ban people just for saying such a small thing. Maybe for the whole rick rolling thing, because that was actually degrading the posts, but just telling people to use the big white bar thing that people should use anyways isn't actually detractful in my opinion.

I think you should re-think your decision to ban based on such an insignificant event, and put your ever-so precious time to better use, like removing inappropriate content. A harmless little phrase like that isn't really worthy of the ban hammer.

I'm gonna say maybe, depends on how you use it. I think that if you see a thread like "What's the difference between true and core center" and you know there are threads out there, you have a duty to post some clever searchbar joke, simply to give new members an idea of the kind of content that is already here. You can do this, however, if and only if you post a link and/or help in some other way.

Basically I think we need to always remind people so they can realize that most of the answers are here already, but we need to be helpful in the process.

Also, get a feel for a persons real question first. Sometimes two threads on the same  topic ask two totally different questions, and neither one contains anything that would help the person who made the other one.

Banning for a phrase? Where is your guys priorities? In a way, since the thread creator didn't think to check the searchbar anyways, you ARE giving him directions, even if it is disrespectful. You can provide the link for him, and then he won't neccessarily learn. Like the old phrase, "You can give a man a fish and feed him for a day, or you can teach a man to fish and feed him for a lifetime."

I think this applies to the searchbar quite fittingly. Maybe he doesn't get instant results, but if you know there is a reliable thread easily accessible by just typing in the persons title again anyways, then it is just as easily accessible of information as if you did the work for him. Why should you neccessarily have to do the work for him? Maybe we want to read other threads instead of look up threads for somebody who was too lazy, or unknowingly made a repeat thread.

I don't believe that is ban-worthy.

There is a difference between teaching someone to use the searchbar, and still being a constructinve, productive contributing manner, and just saying "SEACHBAR YOU FUCKING NOOB"

Now which version was more constructive and actually added something to the site? And which version was nothing more than someone making some dimwitted, unclever post with no intention of helping out whatsoever?

Maybe I'm just brash, but if you type in the phrase searchbar, or some other variation without looking up the information and giving a link to the correct info yourself, you deserve a temporary ban.

Either way you are directing him, but the first way it takes time out of your day. If HE uses the searchbar himself, he still gets his information. But instead of you having to search for it yourself, copy the link, go back and post it in his thread along with a friendly message, you can inform him of his error instantly with 1-2 words.

However, say the topic is on something more complexly named like, "HOLY SHIT TOM WILNOTES" or something, and all the searchbar threads are totally differently named. Supposing you knew that, I think it would be a good time to post a thread for him/her.

BUT! Either way it is just a harmless phrase, not ban worthy. Maybe the person is feeling cynical that day, bad day or something, and they feel like doing some light e-punishing. Should they get banned because they say, "SEARCHBAR NOOB" for one or two out of thousands of posts? I think not.

Saying "searchbar" adds NOTHING of value to any discussion, regardless if the topic has been discussed 8723427657275 times.

Everyone on NS is aware of the searchbar. It is a fast moving internet forum. Reposts are going to happen frequently. Questions will be repeated.

If you have nothing useful to add, why bother posting?

Whether or not the said item is of importance is not the question here. We are talking about the relevance of being banned for saying it.
It may not be constructive, but it still remains un-ban worthy.

One, hell 1,000 posts won't use up NS' bandwith. Especially not with this new server. And I find value in anything somebody has to say, whether or not I agree with it. If they feel the need to call somebody on their mess-up, they should be able to, without fear of being kicked out of here. I think the ban shouldn't be used so lightly, and should be reserved for more serious offenses such as racism, pornography, or other things that could actually get NS in trouble.

Hmmmm... I just about banned someone under this policy just a second ago in one of the Pete O threads in Ski Gabber. But then I realized that these policies are supposed to guide action and the guy probably had no idea he'd get banned for it when he did it. So I'd like to be on board with this (because it's fucking annoying) but yeah... people need to be made aware of the policy first.
