sorry but this is going to be a long thread. thanks to anyone who sticks around and reads it all and makes a useful reply.

so currently i am at this private school and i have been going there since grade 3. in the highschool, they introduced a program called ib. im in grade 10 and this is the first year we are doing it. some of you might know what ib is in which case great. for others who dont ill explain. its basically a program that focuses on the 5 core elements of education-language, maths, sciences, english and fine arts. this school i go to is quite expensive and has been quite an invest for my parents over the past years. anyways, i sort of have an idea of what i want to be in the future, which is something to do with graphic design. specifically something i am interested in meaning, skiing or biking. ib doesnt really facilitate what i want to be because there are no courses that really help with any of that. of course if i move schools to a public school, they have many more specific courses in what i am interested in. the problem is my parents are strong ib believers and i am having trouble convincing them that a public school would be better for what i want to do. any suggestions on what to say? thoughts about this whole sitution? and please post if you have something thoughtful but if your going to say something like "dude that sucks" then dont post. sorry for punctuation, and spelling, i didnt want to waste time on that.

ps. going to a public school would allow for more skiing time as at my current school i only get home at 4pm everyday.

if your future is in any way important to your parents, tell them what you want to do as a career and how public school will be better for you. and then tell them how much money they are saving. you get to go about your career pathway and your parents get to save mad skrill so you can go to a good college.

i would probably say its what you want to do with your life they cant make you be someone else that you dont want to be

if you're in such a nice high school it won't matter what classes you take, you'll get into a good college where you can get the major you're looking for and take the courses you want. it doesn't matter if you take programming courses in high school, so don't worry.

high school is mainly about finding out what you want to do with your life. if you cant try out some different things before you go to college, you may be wasting thousands upon thousands of dollars in college.

the problem is that ib is extremely challenging. some say it is only for the "gifted" which i am definitely not. i am not even enjoying it because it is so difficult.

id say stick it out honestly. right now in high school you can get a good set of what you need in areas like math and sciences ect. but then in college of yourse you will have to take some classes like that too. but since you want to do this graphic design (think i remembered it) but yeah either way in college you can do way more and take a class that would help you much more. Also at your school you could start a club or something that does that. id sya tough it out and do what you wanna do in college

also with the going to public school i like them but i would say no. i mean if yu are getting a good core ed at your school that is pry not something to give up unless public is almost or just as good or even better in which case i would say if you really want go there.

then there is the parent situation. if you really want to go to public instead sit them down and be honest, its the best thing you can do. id tell em that you like your school but feel that the ib program is not for what you want to learn and that you feel you could gain a good core subject education at a public school yet also pursue your interest more thoughourly. if they dont understand maybe talk to them about how you feel about your current shool. also sadly some parents just wont care about what you want.

My school also does IB, I highly recommend you don't take it. If you decide you wanna do IB make sure you take full IB because most universities won't recognize it if you only take 1 or IB courses. If you look at my school's IB grad pictures they've got a 80% facial deformity rate, that's what IB does for you.

i'd stay where you are. IB is going to open up so many more possibilities for you in the future no matter what you want to do. If you go full IB, which is quite difficult, you will get into almost any college you want to, assuming you keep your grades up.

But if you really think that you want to go to public school, sit down with your parents and have a serious conversation with them explaining why you think it is a better option and how it will benefit your specific situation. You have to understand that they are only looking out for your well-being no matter what happens and if they decide that paying a bunch of money to keep you in that school and have you do IB is the better choice then go with it. I can promise you wont regret an IB education later in life.

honestly those courses in high school wont teach you much...im in the same grade as you and in digital media were learning how to make powerpoints and use microsoft work (OMG..)...and then i took photo and he makes us like make collages in microsoft word and says we might use photoshop near the end of the year...


basicly id say stay in your school cause then you can get into a good college that will actually teach you stuff you cant figure out on your own. but your high school might be way different then mine i dunno

the problem is im already finding it difficult and only a month into grade 10 IB which is pretty much still pre-ib. i cant imagine how hard it will be in 11 and 12.

honestly, i care about my education and all, i want to be successful in life. my definition of succesful is being happy. i want to have a job that i enjoy doing and get up in the morning and say "ya im going to work!". but on the other side of that i also want to enjoy the last 3 years of highschool. i mean 75% of the province goes to public schools, it cant be that bad for me to go to one.

U can still take IB in the public system, well at least in Canada. If it's not working out for you, you should definitely drop it, to a certain degree, you can flaunt being in IB to universities but if your grades suck you, won't get anywhere. I don't see IB having much application to the career you plan on pursuing. Unless you are planning to use your IB grades and not your provincial government grades to get into university, but only some universities accept IB grades and usually they have to be over a mark of 4 or 5. Grade 11 IB year is the hardest, and I'm pretty sure grade 12 IB will bite you in the ass even harder with the shitty ass may IB exams. Be frank with your parents, it's your education and beating around the bush will likely not help the cause. Do they know about your future career aspirations? If not, start there and talk to them about it. Then see what they think. Good luck brah.

If you don't think you can survive the IB program, take the hardest classes you're capable of passing and do your best. If your parents are generous enough to finance tuition at a good private high school, you should continue there and thank them when you get accepted into a great college (unless of course your public schools are almost as good or better than your private school, which is very rare)

dude the thing about international bacheoriate programs is that you can go to any school, anywhere in the world so i would stick with it because there are soooo meany more options open to you.

also, dont think that public school is easier i went to private school in grade 7 and i got way better marks there then im getting now (im failing like 4 classes allready)

just say that every other kid makes it just fine i public school. all of my government officials went to my highschool and wisconsin, in my opinion, is one of the best, if not the best, governed state.

I've been doing IB for the past two years, now, my exams are in November of this year.

if you know what you want to do, then IB can be great. the problem comes in with pre-requisites for uni courses.

I cant get into one of the best unis in my home city now, because i chose to do bio and not chem, and two humanities. Really check them out, and then if you cant  get into your courses, bring that up with your parents. if they dont want to listen to you, get your careers counselor at school to chat with them.
im sure that if they are believers in the IB system then they'll understand that it can limit as well as expand opportunities.

the workload for the two years is pretty much the same, but in year 12 there's the addition of finalizing internal assessments and getting them sent overseas. the good thing is it is recognized anywhere in the world, and for this reason im (hopefully) going over to new zealand to study next year.
