Boulder kids with new pledge... protest phrase "under god"

BOULDER — About a dozen Boulder High students walked out of class this morning to protest the school's daily recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance.
About 100 other students watched as the group recited their own pledge to both the American flag and the planet.
Senior Emma Martens, 17, said the students were unhappy with the words "under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance.
"For me, this is all about separation of church and state," said Martens, a member of the school's longtime protest group known as Student Worker.
Principal Bud Jenkins said there would be no repercussions for the students because they did not cause a disruption.
He said the school has no choice but to say the pledge because it is required by state law.
Most of the students who watched today's protest were sympathetic, and cheered on their schoolmates.
But senior Donovan Ranta, 17, said, "I think everybody is doing it to get attention."
"I pledge allegiance to the flag and my constitutional rights with which it comes. And to the diversity, in which our nation stands, one nation, part of one planet, with liberty, freedom, choice and justice for all."

"Separation of church and state" Does that mean that it is the states job to ensure that no religious tendencies or persuasions exist at all?

fuckers think they know alot, but they don't. you can't protest against something that's not even mandatory. yeah there's separation of church and state, and while the phrase under God is in the pledge, it can mean any sort of God to you (God, Allah, Buddah, whatever you want). this has been tried before and failed miserably, no one thinks you're cool for protesting you stupid shits. get the fuck out if you don't like the freedom to not say something you don't have to say.

only in boulder.......
the parents of these kids are probably whack jobs. anyway, i do agree with their statement.
i've never been to church and it does bother me that people's beliefs are pressed on me all the time, not enough to protest but it does bother me. right now i'm sure some of you are saying 'i can't believe you've never been to church!'. well yep, my mom is religious but didn't want to press it upon us and i thank her for that. i don't look down on religion, i just look down on the people who belief they are in the accurate relgion and others in the wrong.

retardedly ironic, the fact that its in the pledge in the first place, considering the u.s. was formed with secular beliefs. religion has no place in government...

I think I said the pledge of allegiance in first grade, none of my other grades or schools made us do it after that. I'm all for separation of church and state, but really, if you have a problem with a longstanding tradition that has lost all meaning in its modern context, I think you can keep your beliefs by staying silent or something.

Why the hell do you have to pledge in the first place? What if you're not a citizen of the US? The church, whatever it is and in whatever way (oral or written), christian, muslim, protestant, needs to stay out of public schools, and I firmly believe this. Express your religious beliefs in the privacy of your own home, I couldn't care less myself. You go to school to learn, not to express your patriotic or religious ideologies. The US is a great country, regardless religion is involved in its institutions way too much.

yeah but its just lame. and someone should do something about it.
not me though. i dont really care. i think the pledge is bullshit though, america is a great country and we dont need to stoop to communist cuba tactics to keep our youth in line.

Are you kidding me? How is it? Just because we come from a very liberal area and have our own liberal idea's and happen to be atheist why should we say under god if that isn't what we believe? We can choose to omit those 2 words if we want, and we will, regardless of what you say. In fact, your intolerance on the matter is the more immature thing between the two, because we are acting on our beliefs, while all you come up with is weak attempts at insulting us.
So why don't you take your weak immature ass somewhere and if you really think people have to say "under god" then you can hold them down and force it, if it's that important to you.

By going out and trying to recruit other people to not say it they're no better than the people they are protesting against. It all boils down to people being over sensitive and shutting out other's beliefs if there's a disagreement --that's what modern America is all about, right? I find it funny that this country is based on so many freedoms, yet we include God (it is capitalized, so it's not just any god) in something that is required to be stated every morning by all the young people in the country. People can argue this all they want, but no matter what the solution is there's going to be a lot of people that are unhappy with it. And therein lies the beauty of religion in the US, the very essence of what makes us despised so much by the rest of the world. Continue arguing.

I think the most objectionable notion in this thread is that pledging allegiance to one's country is legally mandated. What good is patriotism if it's a requirement? People should be open to make the choice as to whether they declare allegiance to their country, it's the only way to give the sentiment any meaning at all.

Wow, just cause they don't belive in god or whatever, you have to go and say they're immature stupid faggots? Man, just shut up, and learn to respect peoples opinions.

if i'm not mistaken, this is the original pledge of allegiance to this country.
"I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."
anyone who thinks they can just go and try to rewrite our countries history by spending a bunch of money on a lawyer or something is gay.

in my state you dont have to stand for or say the pledge. personally i believe these kids are just looking for a little attention and dont care about saying under god. I mean seriously if your athiest and someone asks to to say "under god" why should it matter? its not like you think your gonna go to hell or something

i think that kids should just stand if they want and say it if they want really.
But if they took the words "under God" out of the pledge they should take out other things that might offend, such as the current book im reading "the bookseller of kabul" we are forced to read this book and it discusses a woman having sex with a donkey and girls being anally raped. Maybe we should just abandon the declaration of independence from our history books because its a state law that kids learn about it and it discusses and mentions god many more times than our pledge.

Nice. Go panthers! Most kids there are not wack jobs like we are made out to be though. Most are pretty liberal, some just take it to the next level.
I do miss BHS though. HS there was pretty fun.
BHS always seems to get coverage for political shit, from sit-ins protesting the war in Iraq, to the recent shit with Bill O'Reilly attacking them for a week straight, to the "kiss in" held by the seniors when I was a freshman which consists of lots of girls kissing for the news cameras to protest the removal of a picture of a lesbian couple in the year book, to some amazing school pranks.....good times.

And sometimes you need to be disrespectful to stand up for your beliefs. In the same way that people argue for or against god, people have the choice to omit words in a pledge that they don't want to say. They are still 'pledging their allegiance', because regardless of whether they are pledging their allegiance to a "nation under god" or not, they are still alleging themselves.

Off topic,
I guess you haven't heard of green cards. I hear a lot of people have them nowadays, and they allow you permanent residence in the USA! No way! Who would have thought immigrant bastards should be allowed to stay in the country...
Regardless, somebody saying or not saying the pledge is not going to change anything in your life, so have some tolerance for other's beliefs.
