Its my belief that this site is responsible for the progression skiing has been awarded in the last few seasons. In the old days we had to wait a whole year before we could see the lastest tricks, and the majority of our influences came from our local hill. Now we have the chance to relate to the entire community 24/7 and can see what kids on the east coast are doing, what the west coast killas are doin and what those crazy fucking scandys are up to. We can take bits and pieces of those images, realize what can be done on the dub planks and then incorporate that into our own personal style and skill level. For the most part this is a good thing, i mean the pretzel was pretty much born on the vid section, but we can also see the negative aspects like generic conformity of style across the entire community, i mean look at the truck driver nose banger, one of the worst things to happen to style since brad holmes, all aroused by a couple pics and vids of kids doin them.
so i guess im trying to say use this site for inspiration but dont force your style to look like the hottest bangers cause other wise skiing loses something.

I'm going to go ahead and say NS has been doing this from way back in 2000.

NS has helped kill creativity in this sport. Too many kids see shit on the site and then try to copy it rather then making up there own shit. The way people base there style and how they skis is from other dumb fuck NS kids, and I’m just as guilty as the next person of this. People see what other pros and kids are doing and say "I want to do that" rather then THINKING about new shit to do.
But then again I guess it’s no different then watching movies or looking at stuff in shity ass Freeskier. Try and not watch movies and think of new shit that you have never seen because that is what will progress the sport, not some dumb fuck kids on NS watching vids.

shit i dont think you should be completely blind. there was this case about this girl who isolated and locked in her room for 13 years of her life, without any interaction with other people. when finally freed from her hell she was completely retarded and her motions were animalistic and crude. case in point look what skiing was when it was isolated from snowboarding. it was a misfit unaware of what it could be. humanity can only reach its true potential by comparing and learning from other human beings. the same applies to skiing.

Dude, there is only so much possible on skis. I disagree with you. I think the internet makes creativity grow much faster than it would normally.

^^to the guy above about it killing creativity i know what you mean but really that would apply to most any sport. I think people still do things their own special way sometimes. its not like every skier has a cookie cutter bag of tricks. You know its not like every pro is out there doing the EXACT same thing.

Any new trick is progression. Stop bitching about new tricks, then bitch about how there is no progression.
You all sound like a bunch of picky stupid-asses.

Definitely true. NS has only gotten bigger since then, its crazy to see the level of riding thats in the video sections these days. Kids are dope. Its so good to see. NS definitely helps give kids a chance to get recognized and to contribute their opinions towards the progression of the sport. As much bullshit as there can be on this site, there is also a lot of really great discussion that clearly outweighs the bad. It was cool to hear Philou's opinion of Newschoolers in the IF3 stream (I unfortunately couldn't make it to Montreal). He seemed pretty genuinely stoked about the site and everything. He wasn't just sweet talking Doug cause it was an NS event. It was cool to hear his opinion throughout that webcast.

Ah yea, Anna right? and that is in NON social interaction, we all have social interaction its not the same thing and cant be compared... I’m not even sure why you would bring such an abstract comparison.
But yea there is only so much that can be done on skis, but what is being done now isn’t even close. There are so many new grinds, grabs and rotations that can be done. You don’t need to be a pro or anything to make do new things on skis, you just need to use your imagination and not see what the limits are. By saying there is a limit you are limiting what you are going to think of, think of crazy shit and make it happen.

I totally disagree. Look at the way open source programs work. NS gives people the oppurtunity to to see what other people think and what you can do to change. If NS does anything it is it allows to people to see what other people are doing and then try to step that up. Seeing what other people are doing is what is going to push progression.

Well if you are talking about progression of skiing as a whole unit, then yes, NS is doing that. But individual progress is only limited by that individual. Andy, for example, would have done new slides along with Charles Gagnier. Would we know about it? Probably not, unless it appeared in any media.

Imagine if NS sponsored a skiing half pipe at the same time as snowboarding halfpipe, of the same caliber, during the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver.. Would more people watch it? I think so.

NS is important to me, i get a visual on what everyone else is doing. If it wasnt for NS, me skiing at a small east coast resort would be nothing in the world of freeskiing. i dont no about the resorts that have a bigger population of freeskiers, but for most kids skiing at these small hills, they created there own small group based off of what you have seen other kids doing on the site.

It'd be interesting to see what skiing would be like now without NS actually.

this is actually a very interesting topic. not just for skiing but for every website and every affected industry/ sport/ whatever. the internet is fucking crazy kids and its changing our world dramatically at an incredible rate. our parents didnt have the internet in college and now college kids are all stuck on facebook, and i dont rememebr the last time i saw a phone book around here cause everyone just uses the internet. im not saying that it is definatively good or bad, but its something we should keep our eye on and be really careful with. it's definitely a two way street. i could elaborate more but i wrote a 15 pager about this topic last spring and i could go on for daysssss
