cops can do whatever they want because they are the law and they can say anything they want and cop testimony will almost always trump hoodlum kid testimony in court. If a cop needs probable cause to search you and asks you if he can search you or your car and you say no, boom he has probable cause because you said no. and he could probably make up some story to legitimize him shoving his arm up your ass too.

For those of you that haven't read the thread, HVR parks on the first page is spot on. Given there are three main types of resorts, and policies differ on each. first, forest service land. leased off the govey. the patroller has a right to search you if they have seen something that would endanger. Two, leased off private land (my resort), patrol can search if there is something to endanger. Third, resort owns land outright. This can be different because it is their business on their land, and as such can search under stricter rules if they wanted. But, the same can go for any resort. They may be "rentacops" in your opinion because they always catch you ducking a rope or doing something they are supposed to enforce, but they are there to provide for the overall well being of the customers at a resort. Case in point, or, cases in point. Last year there were a few days where someone ate it pretty hard and patrol deemed it better to close the park for 45 minutes than deal with people riding all over the place (sounds shitty, but some people just don't look and listen to someone standing on a jump telling them to go around or the such... it happens...). They shut down a run for the overall safety of them and the person that yard saled and had to be taken out by life flight or just took a little extra time getting them situated in a stretcher. case 2, there was a snowboarder towards the end of the season brandishing a gun. not just keeping it in a jacket, waving it around. Ski patrol checked every person that matched that description. Was it a shitty deal for the kids that were wearing near the same outfits? ya totally. but it has to be done. same with beligerant drunks. it has to be done, especially at a tourist oriented mountain. So, to wrap up an overly long post, yes, they can search you if there is an endangering condition. And was it Alex ? that said most kids on here are smarter than resort or shop employees? may be true for some shop employees and some resort employees, but it's quite the contrary. There is a wealth of information available from people on this website, most of who don't post on threads such as these because they get shit talked by everyone who thinks they know better because they ride. Just like when I shut down a park early to get cats in there to winch or build new features or someone is hurt or the park needed some care in the morning and opens late. We get tired of the wannabe gangsters yelling at us because they know better. I'm not speaking for any other resort employee on newschoolers but it's a two way street. We love to listen to everyone but there's a point where an hour of verbal abuse is more than plenty to shut down on the friendly side and be straight up with people. And it's usually the nice kids that get the brunt of that afterwards.

And promptly get your pass pulled and taken off them mountain... If they think you're endangering people, telling them no isn't going to make them ski away. You can deny a search, they will just take you off the mountain 95% of the time.

You are completely within your legal rights to say this.

If you are nice about it and don't mouth off and try to run they will be nice back and explain the situation a little more to you and provide reasoning why they requested a search and what will be happening once your reach the base (I.E They have to call police as they had an employee witness you carrying around a weapon.).

Normally if there is a weapon threat they will often have several people escort you and usually a supervisor or manager will be on a snowmobile along side there staff.

If you do try to run they have the right to detain you until authorities arrive. They have no right to use force and can only use restraint to keep you becoming a threat to other guests on the resort. This is only true if they have a valid reason though and a credible threat is imminent.

Of course these rules differ from resort to resort/state/province/country ETC ETC. I am basing this on my experience in a resort in Ontario. We are trained specifically on what to do when these things happen and have policies and procedures in place for certain problems.

If you think the ski patroller is just being an ass and doesn't like you, ask for a manager or supervisor nicely and state the problem to them. If you give respect we hand it right back. The second you become aggressive or rude is when problems begin.

Patrol are there to save your life, it is not an easy task and sometimes you just have to give them a break. It's a lot of stress having someones life in your hands!

If you have nothing to hide and they ask to search you, give them a bunch of shit, and then when they say they're going to kick you off the property, take off your jacket or show them whatever they want to search, rummage through all the pockets and prove them wrong.

Proceed to storm into Mountain Services, cause another scene, demand some sort of compensation for the embarassment they caused you and your friends, and get free shit.

Push for your ticket refund, or a free pass on your next visit, or something good. Just don't sue them.

I don't know what kind of dumbfuck patrollers everyone has at their mountains,  but I've never seen a search without very good cause.  Our patrollers don't want to cause a ruckus and aren't out to "invade your rights".

And really,  you think mountain services is going to give you something for the patrollers stopping you?  good luck, but causing the "scene" in the office will get your pass pulled for being a dick just as quick as a patroller would for doing something shitty on the hill...
