Responsabilities of a pro skier

With all teh talk after the if3/drunken Tanner history,I tougth I coiuld point something out.
Bode Miller is the highest paid athlete in the ski industry.

In case you dont know, he's a party animal that somehow managed to be at the top of the ski racing game and his sponsors gave him a shitload of money even tho he is definatly not the best role model for all the young racers of this world.

The point his, if big companies dont mind sponsoring Bode in one of the most uprigth aspect of skiing , do you really think people sponsoring a freeskier really mind about him being drunk at a party??

Anyway, I dont support the way he acted at IF3 butI just wanted you to know that athletes in our industry are not meant to be acting correctly all the time. Sure some of them do and their sponsors are super happy about it and it give the athlete some more opportunity but it is not necesserly needed.

personally, i think the way that Bode handles himself is disguisting.

im not disagreeing, but i think there should be a level of professionalism that wasnt there, and that isnt specifically directed at tanner.

Well, I don't know what happened, but a skier's responsibility is not about being a role model. If it were for that case, David Beaulieu would never have become a pro. Its the companies that decides who is on a team, and the judges to decide if they go pro.

i agree but at some point, you have to realise that we are someewhat of an extreme sport anddrinking and smoking have been part of our sport for quite a long time now.

Do you expect Keith Richards to drink lemonade at a party???

haha if it really mattered those guys wouldn't be as illin as they are... theyd be bland in a sence if they didnt enjoy themselves... im pretty sure most award shoes besides the grammys are like that.... look at the ozone awards... thats just a huge party...

I'd be pissed if they didn't party... who wants to go to an event that's all formal and strict, especially when it's for freestyle ski event. I mean com'on, it should be a party!

ced you bring up a lot of good points, i dont think it was the idea for tanner to get drunk that night but honestly im not going to judge him because of it, just because he skis better than anyone doesn't mean he's not human and doesnt make mistakes.

i completely agree, drinking and smoking have always been a part of skiing and always will be. it is ridiculous how half the people on the site are flipping out over tanner getting drunk. sure it was the wrong time to get drunk but whatever we all make mistakes, its nothing to go crazy over.

yah i gotta agree with you this isnt like the disney channel or the whitehouse or someshit, im not even a tanner fan but this was definitely just another way for mad people to hate on tanner. I wasnt there so i guess i cant truely know what happened but seriously everyone gets cocked and likes to smoke bud. It prob wasnt his proudest moment but watever everyone has those shitfaced moments leave the guy alone

people just need to chill the fuck out. you are right ced. i just think that people need to realise what we came from...what i am gettin at is that as freeskiers...we are ment to be more expressional and free spirited. who gives a fuck if he was hammered and was mouthin off to people? our industry is built on ski bums who live day to day waiting for that next epic dump...that very few of us get to ever see. chill out people its only skiing.

now if was an olympic party or something...i could see where people would be upset...but this is the freeskiing film festival...why wouldnt he be hammered?

Tanner was just a bit sloppier a bit earlier than I think was necessary. But whatever, it was a fucking blast!

I mean, if you weren't there, you really should'nt be complaining.






And another side note, just something that I think merits discussion, is.......... Think of how much of a non-issue it would have been had the Awards not been broadcast live? (I'm not attacking the live decision AT ALL, I think it was brilliant.... Just a thought)

i dont think it even matters if you are a professional skier or not, if you get on a stage with a mic and there's young kids present in the audience, you should act responsibly.. and say fuck every other word... what tanner did was fucking retarded.

Well, it's also not up to the pro if they are seen as a role model...that's up to the public. It's a shame that being a "role model" is a bad thing in our industry, nobody wants to hang out with the "safe" guy.

Everyone just fucking shut up about all this shit. Who the fuck cares if hes a party animal and all that bull. He is still at the top of the free skiing world and owns the shit out of all the kids on this site who just sit around on their computers all day and talk shit to each other. Tanner is a fucking god, and we are all his believers. Stop treating the dude like hes some movie star whos life got fucked over by all the people who talk shit about him and expect him to act 100% perfect just because hes famous. when people start drinking "shoes" of beer on stage, I call start it a party.

I have yet to see any ski gathering open to the public where people didnt get drunk enought to do stupid stuff.

As I said before, some people tends to go out of control, that's for sure.

everything is okay in moderation. and being a pro freeskier would be boring if we didn't get to party. but when it comes to being in front of your sponsors, at an event, or in front of younger children there def. should be a line. for example, a team mate of mine at Copper got drunk one night at the resort and got in a fight with a guest at copper. the next day he was promptly kicked off the team. we're ment to have fun, but there is a point where it is inappropriate for someone who is representing large corporate companies.

Your "responsibilities" as a pro skier are simply to ski well. How you carry yourself in public is up to you.

However, that being said, a pro skier can certainly benefit by portraying a good public persona. It may lead to more opportunity for them.

For example, Sean White makes millions, way more than any skier, and companies are fighting to associate themselves with him. He is a good safe bet for a company because parents are all stoked to have their kids wanting to be like him. Whereas lots of parents don't want to see their kids trying to be just like Tanner, so corporations will see that as a red flag.

If Olenick handled himself in public differently, he may still be with Salomom, he definitely has the skiing talent...

So, let people act however the fuck they want. If you ever become a pro, do what works for you, but at the same time, it's good to realize that a little PR can go a long way in terms of business opportunity.

It's like in the early days of skating, Peralta worked the "athlete" image, and Jay Adams ripped just as hard but didn't give a fuck about his "image". Personally I think Jay was a cooler dude, but Peralta definitely got a lot more out of the industry in a business sense.

Now was tanner super drunk and swearing in front of little kids, or at a club or something? I agree that what tanner did is nothing to care about really, but to to what he did in front of kids, that's different.
People want that to happen at a bar or pub or club, but at say, a family restaurant he'd be kicked out.
So it was bad who it was in front of, not what actually happened.
Still, it's really no biggie, and why should i honestly care what tanner is like drunk?

Pro means professional, the better the pro can hold themselves together the more opportunity at success.
The companies with the cash don't like messy drunks.
And Tanner is Tanner, he has success and owns his own companies and doesn't give a fuck. He not stupid, he knows his in the public eye and he still does what he wants.
Ski pros are role models and most ski pros have to hold it together in all situations.
Or their sponsors will drop them… hence Pete O.
So all you pro fuckers have fun but also have respect and be responsible. Kids are watching.

I personally know Bode, and he may be a party animal, but under no circumstance would he stand in front of a crowd or media and fans and be obnoxously (sp? ahah) drunk in front of everyone. And yes his sponsor would have problems with that. Partying is one thing, everyone does it, but not in such a retarded manner

Not directing this specifically at you, but in every discussion about pros there are the people who pop in, and say, oh this thread is gay, or this thread is full of pussies.

Some people do care about what the figures of our sport do. Some of these threads are actually intelligent discussions about topics that somehow involve pros, not just "I hate Tanner", or "Pollard is a god". There aren't a million things to talk about during the off-season. I don't really care what tanner or dumont are up to, but i find that these posts are really, really annoying.

And i'm not mad or upset or anything, just voicing my oppinion, like people tend to do on NS.

I just dont think hes the best skier in the world anymore.
sw 9 over chads gap is mostly balls, and so is going super high on that hip. Its the same as with big wave riders. Everybody jacks off about laird hamilton but the truth is he wasnt good enough to make a living surfing in the world tour so he had to do the really risky stuff.

Im not saying tanner isnt good enough but just because he does some really ballsy things that get him injured doesnt mean he should keep acting like hes ON ANOTHER FUCKING PLANET from the rest of the pros.

Hes still one of the best in the world, and if he was really as laid back as everybody says he was, then he wouldnt be such an Attention Whore acting like he was the only number 1 there ever was

Are you kidding? All you need is balls to switch 9 chads gap? And if i am correct, was almost 2 years ago. Think buddy, we would not be where we are in the "Free-Ski" community, if it wasn't for t-hall him self. Im not just blanking out the other skiers who also payed a big part in the progression of skiing. Im just saying that its not all about skill, but about everything, it all pays equal parts. If its from, tricks, stezze, air, to attitude, or personality. But Tanners drunkenness is the perfect fit for a 20 year old pro skier, i dont see him any other way, I think its dope that he can be drunk, and most probably stonned in front of all the lil kids who look up to him.

I think Bode is the man. all the dickhead coaches and "proper" skiers never liked him or wanted him on the team, but he was so much better than them that despite his crazy style and behavior they couldn't argue with the results he put out. If you ask me that's badass to have coaches who hat your style just have to sit there and watch you get down the hill faster than everyone else. I read his autobiography and he's pretty much the man. You wouldn't drink if you were touring around in your own sick ass RV all the time getting paid crazy money to bomb hills??

You know what i think is one of the most unique aspects of our sport is the availibilty of the pros. Just ask any one who has been to an IF3 , freshitval or Summer glacier camps, the "pros" are still very involved with the grass roots. They are accessible and that means that people get to see thier REAl lives, drunken slobbering moments and all.

As has been mentioned the "pros" have to be aware of this and make thier decisions about how to act carefully, because the next day those actions will be posted for all to see. We have NS for our community gossip the movie stars have ET.

I hope we never get to the point were the stars of are sport are so stuck up that they never want to go out and hang with there bros. Do you think baseball fans ever get a chance to hang with derek Jeter or go to spring training. I think the biggest down side of all of this is Tanner just saying F you i will never come out to these things again you buncj of gossipping bitches.

See, this goes back to my earlier post. It WAS a club! and that's what HAPPENS at CLUBS. Now, I'm not sure if the afterparty was all ages or not, but either way that's the atmosphere. I think that the broadcasting of it just made the rediculiousness of it available to (sober) people who weren't there, and opened it up to criticism.

is it really that much of a price to pay for any professional in any field to keep the profanities and drunken behaviour in a fairly private setting? Like for all the industry and your supporters do for you, you'd think so. If you cant understand that then just go ride, do what you love, but stay out of the public spotlight to make room for people who will actually make a positive impact

I never really liked tanner, but i allways respected him. That ship has sailed.
