all the cases on there were w/ ppl who were in fact innocent but what would happen if you were caught legitimately illegally downloading music - especially w/ the industry charging up to $750 per song

lol when i was like 14 i got a letter in the mail saying that they tracked the movie Billy Madison from my computer and it was illegaly downloaded, they threatend me with a 1500 dollar fine and they deleted it from my computer without coming into my house or anything, kinda weird but thats why you turn sharing off

ya i got screwed for downloading a photoshop torrent last summer when i was at stanford and they caught me since i was on their network - i got an email from cisco telling me to delete the files or i could get charged up to a hundred thousand dollars, scary shit - i just deleted the file tho and so far things have gone fine

Nah, there was a big court battle thing in Canada and the judge ruled that it was legal to download, but not to share.

Yeah. Still, I don't use Limewire and stuff anymore, I use Albumbase and Albumhunt. The only time I use a P2P is when there's only one good song, and I know that the rest of that artist's album is complete bull

The music industry needs to realize that album sales are dead, and will never be revived. It is no longer the money-making cash-cow it once was.

Bands I am real fans of I still support by going to shows, and buying their albums, but I am not dropping $15 for a band with a few good songs and that's it.

its the funniest thing too. Cause most artists dont realize that they make little money from album sales. With the exceptions of the hugest ones.
Actually what is funny is that Trent Reznor or what ever the fuck that hacks name is, tells everyone in Australia to steal music to drive album prices down, yet his main audience is in the states... where he wouldn't dare to even have a nightmare about saying that. WHY? because he would get sued by the riaa.
one day Canadians will have to worry about illegal downloading, so turn off your sharing... or feel the wrath!

or do the smart thing and use torrents which are too hard to track.

ya i kno its a pretty scary brodcast - especially how the music industry kept pressing charges even once they first found out it wasn't her who'd downloaded the music, just imagine going through all of this when you actually had downloaded the files yourself

Those are the 10 universities that have gotten the most piracy notices from the MPAA (movies). I'm proud to say that 2 of the 740 at the University of Michigan were thanks to me. Both times I was just told to delete the file. Maybe I did, maybe I didn't.

I haven't downloaded music illegally in a while though. The RIAA is nuts.

still why bother downloading movies on the university network - just use a different internet connection from somewhere nearby, i gues if you're caught downloading movies or apps they'll simply tell to delete the files and warn that they could charge you, but for music rather than asking you to delete the music - the riaa simply goes and sues you for rideiculous sums of money

i wonder if it's illegal to download rar files with music in it. i would be so screwed if i had to pay $750 for the 52,500 songs i have.....$39,375,000 hahaha good luck getting that from me RIAA. I have $100 to my name.

My uncle recently left the music industry, him and my aunt started their own business,  but we chatted about it at the beginning of the summer.  He said straight up,  they are just on a cash binge right now,  cash grab, because they know they are going to die.  They waited so long (music labels) without doing anything to cater to the market that they are trying to hold back as long as they can.  Very few are trying to innovate.  So give it 5 years and you'll see companies trying to make the next big thing to cater to the online generation.

thats why the put the music in .rar files, everything is soo split up that it is like impossible to track on the interwhole......so its really hard for those companies to catch you and sue for them.   RARS are a lot safer cuz they are like dinosaures and scar evil, rich, greeedy fucks away.

They can get you for downloading a file, but having a file on your computer isnt grounds for being charged. As long as you reformat the file, you're ok most of the time. And yes, trackers and all can be avoided if you're careful.

But really, the RIAA is shit. Its a dying business and they're just doing this needless shit in order to keep making millions. Every year they lose 20% of their profits. They're hemorrhaging like crazy, and these lawsuits are all that they can do to keep afloat. With the internet, there is really no need for them anymore, and its ridiculous for them to try and contain it. iTunes doesnt have all the music in the world anyways, and its completely irrational and against everything the internet has spawned to believe that trading of files, music and programs will stop. People are going to keep doing it no matter what, they will always find a way around the barriers in their way.
