If you, like me have always sat there and thought, fuckin shit, I wish i had some backcountry to ski, but goddam i live in the east coast, so anything worth skiing is about 1000 miles away. The answer. New York. WTF? the Adirondacks. again WTF? k. The Adirondacks have so much open backcountry it is unbelieveable. If you really want to ski some sick backcountry, in the EC go to http://www.dacksdescents.com , or buy The Adirondack Slide Guide by Drew Haas. This book or shows over 70 untouched slides and chutes that were recently unknown to most of us. CHECK IT OUT and SKI THE BC.

Do you need a sled? Or can i pretty much just drive up somewhere in the adirondacks and park my car at the side of the road and the go hike and build a sick booter?

you might find stuff right on the road but i would think 85% of those slides you need skins and trekers and prolly a few miles on trail to even get to most of them

yeah most are hike ins with some mileage to it.

a lot of the area is designated Wilderness including the High Peaks area where all the shots in the Slide Guide are. So you really can't buring a sled. And though it is New York, you need some mountain and snow sense

Actually I've been skiing the adirondacks my whole life. I've skied better terrain there than out west. I've only been out west once though, so not much comparison.

Check Wanderland out. Seriously, there's a bunch of shots from the northern NY area that are as good or better than similar west coast shots........... it can get DEEP up there with the lake effect machine running at full tilt.

The massive slide on Mt. Equinox in VT is sick as hell. Only skied it once but it was incredibly badass.

Dude.

I'm looking to try to find some interesting terrian here in WNY for when the Lake Effect gets rolling. It could be real deep and good if I can find a good location. Downside is no vert.

If I can find anything, you are welcome to drive the hour and shred it here.

Steve, I think there's some decent terrain directly south of me, down the I-390 corridor. I'll pull some topo maps and report back.

And hell yeah if there's anything that's steep and deep I'll shred it for sure. And take pictures.

Problem there Ian, down the I-390.. there's some good hills and angles, but it lacks the snowfall, so you won't be seeing deep.

Oh, and dude, pre-requisite of something you NEED to do, go to Letchworth State Park. Some way sweet views and some way cool waterfalls in a natural setting. It's a pretty burly gorge. I got some photos of them on my webshots thing. You can find the link thru my AIM profile.

Oh, and post thought, if you come over to Western New York south of Buffalo, you will get into Lake Effect territory. We pick up 200 inches of snow before Lake Erie freezes over, which in most years is early February.

Just need to find some good hills and get at it!

Yeah, they get way deep snow up there. The hunting cabins have doors for entry on the second story for during the winter.

If only Lake Erie didn't freeze we'd see nearly the same in Western New York.

thats sick dude but theres BC all over the east coast its just less known and takes a bit more effort. I live in ontario and know atleast 3 or 4 40+ foot drops with sick lines after them plus lines of smaller cliffs its just takes a little effort

If you hike up to lake colden there is a ton of stuff that is do able right around there.  Its all been done....you basically have to leave at son up with snowshoes hike 12miles round trip and get back at night. Its so worth it though.  There are a bunch of other mini golf lines and slides that are right next to roads or a 5 minute hike from a road in the Lake placid tri lakes area but they are secrets and im not about to blow my powder. 


And the book sucks all it is is areal pictures in black and white with a few trails marked out.  If your using that as a guide to ski then chances are your going to end up like the 4 guys last year.  Get someone who knows the area and snow well before you plan on going up.  The slides are big (in the square miles of open rock).  They dont call it avalance pass just for fun.
