Straight from tip to tip is how it's done. If you're reading threads about people mounting a ski 2 back from centre/etc, use this measurement.
BUT, if you want to mount on true centre then you'll end up with more tail than tip because on most skis the tail scoop is shorter than the tip. So the best thing to do is measure RUNNING LENGTH CENTRE and mount there. This normally ends up between 0.5 and 1.5cm back from true centre depending on the ski. This is where I mount my park skis because it gives you equal tip and tail touching the snow.
