I'm new to mountain biking and I'm about to go buy a 2005 Norco Sasquatch for 400$. The fork is a Dropoff and the bike has already been used a few times. One of the brakes is leaking but apparently I can get it fixed for about 50 bucks.

Good deal? or should I ask less?

thats a pretty decent price. the brake shouldnt cost anymore than 50 to get fixed, adn even if you had to get a new one, you can get a good one for 150. id say go for it if its in good shape

well its a hardtail so its not the ideal dh bike dude. for dh, youre better offgetting a ds bike. the sas will be good for street and djing.

well if its dh your gunna be doing, adn ur price range isn that high, then id look at a used full suspension, something like this http://www.pinkbike.com/buysell/263272/ ( 05 norco a line) or an atomik or just something cheaper. hardtails are no good for dh, but i guess it depends were u are racing . if its jus light dh i guess ud be ok on the sasquatch, but if its actual racing, then id invest in a full suspension. Just dotn chince out on the parts because of money or ull regret it after 10 new rims or something like that.

Figure out what you want to ride? If you want to downhill get a full suspension bike with at least 7 inches of travel. The Norco Sasquatch would be better for cross country mountain biking or dirt jumping and at that price it would be an ok deal. Take it for a test ride to see if you like it and there really are no more problems.

ok so I finally got the bike for 370$ cdn and yes I have considered the double suspension bikes but since I'm beginning(I won't be raciong, no :p), my friends (who mtb a lot) told me to go with a hardtail for my first year. I've already went out a couple of times at Bromont (but with some dual-suspension bikes) I'll probably upgrade a few things on the bike if I have the money. The guy I bought the bike from assured me it was a good bike for Bromont.

Nice, I ride at bromont. I also do it with a Balfa BB7 though...

I really don't know if you'd be able to hold a lot of the trails with a sasquatch, especially if you're a beginner.

that bike is good for 400 cdn, i rode a hardtail for freeride its just not as nice but i like it much more than a dh bike for freeride

the 'quatch i would see as more ideal for urban/dirt jumping, but if youre not doing heavy DH then you should be fine, tilll you need an upgrade.
try pinkbike for some deals

why??? its much better to learn on a hard tail than get a serious downhill rig and not have the skills to ride it.

plus hard tail DH is a sport in itself, lots of people do it

if you want to learn how to ride DH, you should ride bmx first. if you ever plan on racing, the kids who rode bmx willl beat you, they will have more flow wth thier bikes...

Seems good, its a real good starter bike for DH. If you learn on a hardtail you will learn better and be alot faster once you upgrade to a fullyt

i half diagree, a dirt jumping bike will do pretty much the same job as a bmx, and its easier to make the switch, plus you cant ride DH at all on a BMX

haha im not saying to ride DH on a bmx. im saying that even a dirt jump bike is wayyy easier to handle and manuever that a BMX. bmx builds core fundamentals much like ski racing does with freeride. If you look at any world cup racer or freerider in the movies, they didnt just hop on a race bike or freeride bike. they almost all have a bmx or cross country background. im just saying that if you just hop on a dirt jump or DH bike, you will peak at some point where others who have the fundamentals will pass you.
