Skiing in Newfoundland

Hey
I want to make a post to advertise Newfoundland's skiing.  I know this is kind of weird, and it is a small province, but it's a great place to ski.  There was a group of guys from Montreal area in during... Feb or March month and they said it was a great place to ski (btw if you any of you who were here are reading this, msg me, i'm aaron and i know there was matt chris jon and mark, no last names) and it is.  There is tons of urban to slay, we have some nice back country called the Blow me Downs and a small hill with lots of cool features (nothing park related)

And if your here in the spring and you can stand on your skis you'll win the comps, not a whole lot of tallent in the way of skiers here. The last group took the comp and won some money, goggles, helment I think, and some tickets to a party.  Some nice shit.  And depending on how many people come there are some good places to stay.  There's a world class resort just built here (www.humbervalley.com) with sick challets to stay in with 6 bedrooms or so at roughly 250 a night.

Anyway with winter comming up people are starting to plan trips and I just thought I'd throw it out there.  It's a great places to come and ski for a week if you have the time and money to get here, and not a lot of people know about it.

For any other small places out there post up some details about it and maybe someone will end of having a different places to travel to this season.

yea newfoundland looks like a great place to go, the meatheads have been twice and from thier vids the place looks awesome

such an amazing untouched spot for the east. I can't believe there isn't much of a ski scene up there. Make sure you check out Wanderland to see all the most recent action from Gros Morne National park (a little more north on the island from the blow-me-downs)

Newfoundland is too remote and the weather is too shitty to ever be a real ski destination. It's very, very far from just about everywhere. My parents live about 40 minutes from a ferry going to Newfoundland, the whole trip would probably take 16 or 17 hours to get to Marble, and they live relatively close. If you think about flying, you have to fly all the way to Saint John's and then drive another 10 or so hours to Marble. If you manage to get a flight to Stephenville, which is fairly close to Marble, you're going to be paying through your fucking teeth. It's far more to fly to Marble than it is for me to fly to Banff, Whistler, Colorado, Utah, the PNW or anywhere in the East.

Then, there's the weather. I grew up in Nova Scotia, so I know how annoying weather on the Atlantic can be during the winter. Both places typically get multiple rainstorms each winter which ruins the snow, freezes, and turns to sheet ice. It comes out of the blue and sometimes large snow dumps end up turning to rainstorms. I've had this happen to me a ton of times in Nova Scotia, ruining an entire season's snow and I had it happen when skiing in Newfoundland too.

It just doesn't make a lot of sense to ski in Newfoundland to me when I can ski better terrain and snow, cheaper and close (in terms of time). It is quite cheap once you do get to Marble though, lift tickets are cheaper and accom is cheaper. Plus, you've gotta drink with the Newfs at least once if you're a Canadian!

this is getting me psyched about goign to school here, especially since there si now snow on the ground! Hopefully I can set up my courses next semester to ski all the time.

I skied Marble for nearly a week in March 2002, and got some awesome powder on 2 days.  We flew into Deer Lake, which is only a 30 minute drive from the hill.  Although I agree it is expensive to get there, so long as you fly into Deer Lake it's not too difficult.

The footage from Newfoundland in the Meatheads movies is incredible, but the destination really is remote and very difficult to get to.

Definitely, I flew into Deer lake also.  It's not far at all from good terrain.  As long as you hit the weather at the right time, Newfoundland is really sick.

I think tehre's a small chance of that. from what I hear it gets COLD and stays that way in the middle of teh winter anyway.

Its sweet.  I went over there a few years back, glen noel runs a cat op.  Got taken into the blomidons, then went to marble.  Skied the mountain behind cornerbrook which ends in peoples backyards.  Then went up to Gros Morne and did some BC at the tablelands and in one of the fjords.  Friendliest people ever and they know how to have a good effin time.

I'm pretty sure I can speak about the skiing in Newfoundland as well as anybody. I'm 22 and have been skiing at Marble mountain for 17 years. I've been a 'newschooler' since the mid 90's, had the first pair of twins at the mountain, built countless jumps, skied my share of out of bonds stuff an hit up every comp I could have. 

I'm not sure who you are A_Whelan but I wouldn't totally agree. I think Marble is a great spot for the locals. No lift lines, cheap passes, occasional pow (some of the best in the east), but like it's been said, Marble will never be a destination. Too remote and costly for what you get. If I were on the mainland there are a number of other locations I would put before marble on my list. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate everytime I get to ski at marble (not very often in the last 3 years), but as soon as i'm done university i'm off to bigger and better things. 

Yes there have been a number of crews come here. Level 1 had an awesome NF section in forward, i've been urban jibbing with a few from the meathead crew, and i'm sure a few more have been here. However, most film companies are looking for original locations and have a budget to get here. For most people, Newfoundland isn't the best bang for the buck in terms of a ski vacation
