New Zealand or Canada

okay ive been thinking about being a exchange student for next year(starting in july 08). and before i can go on its logical that i have to pick my destination country.
i really love two countries: New Zealand ja Canada so my choice would be one out of these two.

so all fellow newschoolers(and especially these that live in named countries) please give me suggestions, where to go (and where to not to go!)

and ofcourse, the reason why i made this thread here on newschoolers is that i am hoping to ski alot during the exchange year, so...

when would u go on exchange? the new zealand winter and canada's winter are at different times soooo you should figure that out first and foremost.

i would like to say canada because i live in canada and adore my country.

i would go in july as mentioned before and be there like 10 months so i could get some NZ winter but if i went to canada i could have the whole snowtime.

or same with NZ? when does the season in NZ starts/ends?

oh thats the thing. i dont get to know that until like im totally sure and filled in all the applications and other papers.
so i really dont know where are they sending me.

but is it possible that i go to a location where theres no parks or even snow nearby so it would be really shitty to go skiing?

so the good thing with NZ is that its so small and even if i would be sent to shitty place i always have the chance to make a little trip and go skiing!

Canada wouldnt be much of an exchange and its like the 2nd biggest country in the world,so the chances of you getting placed by a good mountain is probably slim. I would go to new zealand because it would be cool to ski in the summer and they have some pretty sick mountains on a small island.

haha the point of an exchange is to see the country...so the exchange place would be kinda dumb to send them to saskatchewan. i would say new zealand just because that seems like a once in a lifetime experience. im not sure where you are coming from though.

yah sine u got no options on where u wana stay in canada go with new zealand cause u will have a much greater chance of being placed real close to mountains

and u said july...sry mister no snow for months where i'm from in canada only on the glaciers out west in BC.
therefore go with New Zealand tiss will be a very unique experience

i would go to new zeland. the plane tickets are so expensive, its only worth staying there for a few months. my brother studied abroad there during a simerster, and he thought that is was one of the best places in the world. he said that he knew more about how their government ran than ours, and he was there for 2 months. he didn't ski, because it was summer there when he went. he did get poured on one night, and they got over a foot of rain in just one night, and 3 feet of snow in the mountains. i would say NZ hands down, because its such a nice place to live. the peoples accents aren't hard to understand, but most of them can't understand our accents. and this is someone from vermont, where there really is no accent, except we don't say the "t" at the end of vermont.

I was born and grew up and live in NZ and have just recently returned from BC, Canada. it was the fucken shit. But i do come back home and there are fucken amazing parts to our country, there is alot of shit, as in everywhere you go, but if you come here, make friends with someone who lives here, has alot of free time, and knows some real nice spots, to take you around. so thats probably no help.

In fact AOTEAROA is New Zealand in the indigenous Maori language. It means "land of the long white cloud" alot cooler than New Zealand i think.

the girls in new zealand are pretty ugly. we have nice looking girls here. thats all that really matters. plus they show flight of thhe conchords in canada so youll get your fill of new zealand culture

New Zealand without a doubt lived in New Zealand for over 6 months North and South Island and been everywhere in Canada and New Zealand is way way way way way way way way better and if you say different you haven't been there and you have been occupied in your little shell siting in your room with a finger up your fucking ass!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

really no contest.  i went to NZ for 12 days to visit my sister who is studying abroad there now, and it was the most amazing place i've ever been to.  the whole country just seems so welcoming to everyone and everyone is great to be around.  i was only there 12 days so i don't know much, but it is really a once in a lifetime experience that i can guarentee u will enjoy

answer to that is Europe so both of the countries would really be a new experience for me.

but...reading all these posts made me see that for skiing, NZ definately is a better option just becouse of two things:
1)its smaller so its easier to get around
2)i can ski in "summer"(when other people on northern part of globe are soo jelous.

But may I ask one more time, when does the season in New Zealand starts/ends???

i just assumed you were american. That changes it. I was going to say if you were american go over seas for sure! But now that your european canada is further, but like everyone said there is about a 25% chance if that you will end up near decent skiing...

givin your situation and not knowing where in canada you were going i would say NZ

However, i am canadian and i LOVE it here

ohyeah...i love canada also since the early childhood:D so it would be something special for me to really LIVE in that country. Its so hard to choose!

about NZ, the season lasts from June 22nd to September 29th so i wouldnt get a full season either way couse i have to choose from

a)starting in aug 08 and finishing in june 09 OR
b)starting in sep 08 and finishing in july 09.

its different with Canada cos there id the full season.

but hey, skiing is only a small part of that 10 months i spend there so i have to think alot more.

CANADUH!! Most of you don't realize that applying to these programs is a long intense deal, meaning they match you with an appropriate host family. I've never done one but am almost sure you will be near a place to ski if you make that a high priority in your application. They often try to match you with a family with the same interests, lifestyle, etc.

Now if you were from North America I would say go to NZL. It's not a country I know much about so I can't really compare. But I do have to rep my homeland, and make sure you not disillusioned by what others are saying about not being able to ski in Canada.

Yeah, canada season runs alot longer. Depending on if you were skiing north or south island in NZ you get different terrain.

There are a  lot of shitty places in Canada, basically anything east of the rockies is a hair nut sack.    Some of onterrible and queerrbec is okey for skitting...but its cold, dry, doesn't snow much and smaller mtns.  Far east coast is pretty similar too, maybe some more interesting peeps.  If you can make it to the interior of BC, rockies ( either side), or coastal range mtns, you are set. otherwise go to NZ.

Our season is just ending in Otago (in NZ) at the moment, so the season is from late June/early July to late September/early October

But yeah its pretty sweet here, lots of european people come on exchange too.

I was born in New Zealand and been there many a times, and I have lived in Canada my whole life, if your looking for sick deep snow Canada is your place, Nelson BC has some  of the best snow in Canada. Although for me New Zealand is a much nicer place, although I am slightly biest to NZ cause I haven't got to spend much time there. You will have fun regardless to where you go!

If you choose Canada they will probably send you to Ontario. Ontario has no mountains. The skiing is abysmal. In the winter it is -20. You do not want to be there to ski, despite the amazingly hot women. Go to NZ.

if you get to go anywheer near whistler then go there u ll ski more.

but nz is realy sweet, and i have a friend who when there for a year he said it is the best country ever. people are nice there. weather is good.
lifestyle is soo different from here. (in europe)

I just got back from studying abroad at the University of Otago. It was by far the best and most rewarding experience of my life. Otago is the closest to snowpark and a few other prime resorts, so if youre going for the skiing go there. Not only do you get to ski from june to october, but it is also located right next to about 10 good surf breaks, which never go flat. Not only that, but the party scene there is ridiculous. To contrast that the academics there are really good as well. Not only that, but the ratio of males to females is in the guys advantage for once, and if youre used to ski towns, that will be heaven for you.

However there is a downside to otago, and that is that its really really cold. While you might be saying "oh ive been skiing my whole life i can deal with it" know that they dont have central heating, so the house is generally colder than the outside. other than that, its all good with no real issues that i can speak of.

come to nz!! definately guna be a good move. Saty in wanaka or dunedin and you will be set. They have all the skiing you will need in 2 fields, snowpark nz and treble cone. Snowpark is mint 100% park and the atmosphere up there is super sick and chilled. Then treble cone is the big mountain side with a ton of bc and ungroomed shit. Always a heap of powder there and there arnt that many people.

go to NZ, for all the reasons mentioned before.  I spent 7 months there, 4 in wanaka for the ski season and I loved every minute of it, and yes, that included waking up and being able to see my breath in the house, haha.  I'm going back for another season soon, not this coming winter but the next one, can't wait.

van is where its at.. If you were able to get to vancouver,  I would say come here, you have 3 local mountains, grouse, seymour, and cypress, and then if you drive for about 2 hours you have whistler/blackcomb to sesh. its sooo good
