if its cold then either under armour or sweatpants depending on how cold it is

my 686 pants have pants a liner zipped in so hot chilis with boxers on top then snow pants on cold days. otherwise just boxers then snow pants because the liner zips out and looks just like a regular, but really warm, pair of athletic shorts. I wear boxers on top of the hot chilis so if I want to take off the hot chilis after skiing I have boxers to wear underneath.
